I've been trying to get back into mapping lately, but the problem is that I'm inspiration-less. So where do you guys get your inspiration from? Your imagination, images or something else?
Imagination.
Images. This, for example: http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=19992725&postcount=1154
I start up HL2/EP1/EP2/Portal/TF2 then look around for interesting architectural work. Or, I look into the W.I.P thread.
Well I saw a really bad movie a few months back and I was thinking about it the other day, and I thought it would be fun to give it a go... Anyway, despite it having the same name, it's completely different to what I was planning, but the point remains.
Reality Warping is a good way for inspiration. Or Mis-seeing things.
Lots of different sources I see, I think I'll also take a look at other games and get inspiration from them.
Just look at a lot of buildings that other well known architects or architectural firms have done. I particularly like the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and draw a lot of my inspiration from his buildings. Also the firm Skidmore Owings and Merrill. They're a good one to check out. Usually find interesting architecture then can't stop thinking about it till I've mapped a good portion of it.
Camera phone. I always keep my phone with me so if I see something interesting, I can snap a picture. I've been volunteering at our local community center which is hosting a winter carnival. I haven't been there in ages and I took a picture of the front: Pretty unique. Inside, I was taking a break from making snow cones, so I sat down in the arena part to check an IRC channel, though I noticed the roof had some vaguely interesting design/pattern to it. So I took a picture: ^Who knows, a map with a giant index finger could be... Fun? Inspiration is everywhere. From that stairwell at school, to that weird roof on the house at the corner.
Whenever I am traveling to another country, or just out doors I look for inspiration. Some times I take a picture, if not I try the best I can to remember the architecture, and hopefully when I come back home I re-create it with hammer.
I went to Gozo a few months back and I filled two memory cards with photos of the villa we were staying at because it was interesting.
