Backstepper: MasterGir asks: ‘Will Valve ever update the source SDK, especially Hammer?’
Newell: Oh yeah, we’re spending a tremendous amount of time on tools right now. So, our current
tools are... very painful, so we probably are spending more time on tools development now than
anything else and when we’re ready to ship those I think everybody’s life will get a lot better. Just
way too hard to develop content right now, both for ourselves and for third-parties so we’re going to
make enormously easier and simplify that process a lot
Haha, bout time.
Fuck yeah, will be able to make even better maps then I already do :smug:
That's great.
Hell yeah! I've been waiting for years!
Whoa, 15 page conversation. This is quite in depth stuff.
You know, don’t wait to start making games - if you want to make games, start making them now and keep your projects as constrained as possible, right. The first thing you should do should only take you a day, and I know that sounds weird like ‘How can you do anything useful in a day?’. Well, it’s a lot easier to do something useful in a day and make it better over several days than it is to do something over several days and not end up going awry. So, those are just a set of suggestions that I would make to people.
Gabe is awesome.

Not till he implements anything :saddowns:

I suppose 50% of Facepunch members are screwed then.
It was a really interesting interview, and I can't wait for part 2.
New tools are going to be so awesome!
Gabe is so skinny.

Stop it, your sarcasm is going to scare him away :gonk:
Prepare for the influx of a new generation of shitty maps which are easier to make when Portal 2 SDK arrives.
I hope faceposer will work with Vista and 7.
Or maybe even an entirely new faceposer system.

They will be weeded out and tossed aside like all the shitty ones that come out now. Hopefully that will help them learn to make better maps in the future.

Unfortunately, long term realization for games is a mocap facial system which would make it very hard for modders.
Mr. Newell... Add Func_Veichiles!

Do you think this will include better modelling support?
I know I'd feel a lot more compelled to make custom props and the like if it wasn't such a buggerance to get them in-game.
dats awesome

Think of all the elitism it'll generate from pr0 orig1n4l hamm3r m@ppers.

Not to suggest they'll change from hammer.
That'd leave a mark in my day.
Hi there :-)
Cool page. Thnx!
sorry if this isn't related to mapping but

I find all of these little things at the start of the conversation really interesting. I liked the section on how Gabe talked about the sociology of flaming as well, it explained some of my friends calm behaviour in real life but increased aggressiveness online.

we’re doing DOTA 2 because I’m addicted to the game"
What the balls.

[editline]10th February 2011[/editline]
aka crappy maps
[editline]10th February 2011[/editline]
This is good though because I'm absolutely terrible with the current hammer
I hope this includes real time lighting and stuff, or is that not the type of update we're talking about?
Oh, also, any estimates on when this will be out?
