I've looked over the Request section and quite a few times, people only map if paid. Do you believe this is right? My answer is no, because basically that person is paying for a map, something Valve said is pretty much illegal, unless you somehow didn't use a bit of thier software. (And you are because the made HL2, which is software, therefore illegal to use if making a map thats being paid for.)

Its illegal to sell the map, not illegal to give the person money for their time on making the map. I think of mapping as a hobby.
Well fine, maybe the map and time are two different things. Though I think it's also people being lazy and not getting a job, and if they're young then I'm certain thier parents won't approve. Unless the parents are just as lazy. But thats for people who only work for money. Most of you work for free, but won't miss out on a chance to get some extra Money.
You obviously don't know who robert briscoe is then.
I would never map for money, mainly because I'd feel as though I hadn't accomplished much on my own, but I'd have followed someone else's guidelines, I like making maps up as I go. I love abstract maps.

Some maps take up to and even more than a year to make. Look at how much time you spend in sdk each year, that's a whole load of time to put into someone elses map. You'd want to get something back. but then again, the whole "haei can some1 make a desert map with a mountain" doesn't take that long.
No, its gay :U
No, its gay :U
Yeah, it´s kinda gay to ask some small donations, that help you to continue your hobby (mapping and let the community to have some fun with them).
No, I map because it's something I like doing.

Well, I remember back in the day when Evocity 2 was in the making, quite a few people donated money to Sgt. Sgt. so he could use the money to buy computer parts in order continue on the project. Nobody'll ever tell whether he really needed new computer parts, but sure as hell it will have motivated him to keep working on it. [editline]09:25PM[/editline] Besides, it's not like the creator is forcing people to pay him. If the person who requests the map wants to pay, it's his choice really.
Yea what larry said, i think theres nothing wrong with it. money doesn't grow on trees, and if you can earn some money with your hobby, and people are willing to pay, then theres nothing wrong with it.
Paying to use the map itself is pretty damn stupid. But a mapper can charge for the time spent should they wish, so long as it is a sensible amount and covers just the time spent on the map. though this does mean mappers with inflated egos will charge more than a slightly more honest or overly modest (right word I hope) mapper will charge next to nothing or absolutely nothing as they would be mapping for the sake of something to do most times. I don't really agree with selling anything for games that I produce, there is no need for it as I could get a job, and have a reliable, steady source of income instead of a low, fairly unstable income.
Nah I don't need money for mapping. But if someone wants me to take money I will I need every penny.
I'm more than happy to do a map for free no matter how tough it gets... ...because I've never finished a map :v:
No, you should not get paid for doing a hobby. I am mapping because it is fun. If you want to make money out of mapping, seek for a job at a game development company.
I'd maybe like donations if I were working on something humongous, but that's more because I'm spending shitloads of time doing something for someone else. I'd use it to cover my endless need for coffee, taco bell, and bawls
I've donated more than 100$ worth of games to hazard24 to give him inspiration, and cuz he's coo [editline]08:06PM[/editline] Rate heart
You know, except it doesn't really help you continue your free hobby.
You do understand, that you need to maintain your pc sometimes, and that doesnt cost few €€? (Even if you have the skills to do it on your own, like i do.) Sure, you can pay it on your own if you have enough money. If you dont, you can always give a shot, and ask some small donations from the community, so you can continue your hobby and build maps for others to play and have fun.
I dont think money is needed, But if there offering it and its a hard map, its good just to take the money.
its like being paid a commission for art

Should I make fans of my maps pay for my groceries too?
And that's why I would get a real job. Should I make fans of my maps pay for my groceries too?
Yes.
It's like one of those "google pays me $2000 a day to sit on my ass" things :v: If someone wanted to pay me for a map I was doing, I wouldn't stop them, but I definitely wouldn't say "I'll only map for you if you pay me".
An experienced mapper is probably not going to map something of the same high quality without being reimbursed for the time spent. If you want something of a very high quality, expect to pay for it. Of course, the only map i tried to make for someone, it all ended badly. I dropped it because i wasn't happy with the maps direction, and partially because of the guy's attitude. He seemed fine with it at the time, then attacked me later on in a thread.
If someone from the requests section wants something mapped and it's something that I wouldn't have the drive to map for, I'd expect to be paid. But if there was a request for a map to be made for a gamemode I'm interested in, then I'd do it for free.
I myself would not take money for making a map if they shoved it in my face with a bat. /end
I map purely because its something of a hobby for me. I wouldn't want money unless a map took a month or longer to make.
