Before I start, please note that I am not wanting to decompile to steal anyone's maps, just to edit them for machinimas and see how they're made, not for release.
I downloaded VMEX, and found a .bsp I wanted to use, and no matter what I do, through the command prompt or the GUI, I cannot decompile maps. Does VMEX, not work on Windows 7?
Try using that edited vmex
It doesn't matter what OS you use, it's probably a weird BSP - protected or corrupt
I don't know about Windows 7 but there are a few tricks mappers can use to prevent decompiling - so that could be the problem. There are ways to get around them but I've never tried so can't help you there.
Are there any other ways of decompiling other than using VMEX?
What map are you trying to decompile?
no.

I am trying to decompile either:
rp_evocity_v2d (which has been done before; there are edits out there0
rp_downtown_v2(which has been done before)
rp_evocity2_v2(not likely to happen)
or rp_cityway_v1

I hope you're not doing this to make an edit
Even if you decompile evocity or rp_downtown good luck recompiling it.
He is doing it to make an edit.
I personally think decompilling is defacing other peoples work, the only map from those i know of where the Creator has uploaded the vmf and allows you to edit is downtown_v2 and that may also not be The Pro.

only time i decompile is to see how a certain function works, to get particular area of a prefab or its my own maps.
in other words a learning tool not a map making tool

As I said at the top, I am not decompiling to steal others work. I am only wanting to see how things work and possibly edit them for use in machinimas. Like, say enabling an elevator to work, or making an unbreakable window breakable, stuff like that.

Have fun recompiling it.
1. Evocity, Downtown, Cityway. All have Decompiling locks.
2. I know the creator of Evocity, And Cityway. Why not just ask them to edit them for you.
3. Decompiling fucks up brushes and entities.
lets just keep the maps untouched, and keep the authors happy.
Decompiling is something only homeless guys would do, as they don't have to spirit nor skills to make one them selves.

Not really a homeless person. Just a "Noob" who would want to edit a perfectly good map and release it and say "Oh iz madez this mapz my self since january 2006 herp derp!"

It is meant to give newer mappers the chance to see how others have done things. I have done it a few times to see how someone optimized, made an unusual door, and how scripted sequences were done. The tool is meant to help you learn how others did it so you don't learn through trial and error.
Lets face it: this is a hobby, a very time intensive hobby that most of us do not have to spare. I work 6 days a week and freelance work as well. I can't spend 20 hours figuring something out, compiling to see if it worked then doing it again because something I did was wrong. We aren't in competition for jobs here, so if someone wants to see how I did something I am fine with even explaining how I did it. Get over yourselves.

Except when people deface your work, put it in garrysmod.org that's poorly optimized due to decompiling, and ruins the map's name. That's when it's inappropriate. If it's for learning, I don't mind.
It does, I tried it on 2 of my maps, when I changed from XP to Win7, I lost all the projects so I had to download them and decompile
