Hello! :)
I am mrpotato44, and I am working on GTA V in gmod (No, not like GTA RP at all). And I am about 20% done. However, I need a map. A FULL map of Los Santos.
This is probably one of the biggest projects the Gmod Community has and probably will ever face.
If you are willing to help and are a professional map maker/team (most likely a team), Please contact me through steam: (mrpotato44) or on the forums :)
Thank you!
not possible, source can't handle a map that big.
Even if the map had literally no lighting entities, or even entities at all, Source couldn't handle the sheer size.
Not to mention the amount of memory the map + textures would take up, meaning most of the people who'll play it (if it was possible) would complain about horrible stuttering and/or lag.
You should probably wait until Source 2 gets more fleshed out to work on creating a map that huge.
There are reasons this hasn't been done before and its not because nobody had your brilliant idea.
Just for the heck of it, I tried to make a map larger than 32768 (the map size limit), and it works. (Not really)

Where I'm standing, you can't move. You can noclip, even airstrafe, but you can't move. I also tried taking a car past 32768, but any entity that goes past the map limit is removed. Completely. Not to mention the map doesn't render if a brush is not in sight.
So no los santos for you buddy. Sorry.
You could always make the proportions smaller and then after the map is done resize the character. However this comes with it's list of problems.
If I was you I would wait for Source2, a lot more opportunities there!

I'm not sure about the latest GTA, but GTA IV requires you to scale the models up if you want to port them to Source, so he'd have some assets but nothing else.
Just play GTAV??

I have been reading multiple pages on Source 2. Has Garry actually confirmed updating Garry's Mod on the Source 2 Engine?
No, at least not yet.

He may be hinting to it by asking people what they would call a second GMod but he has told me before he explicitly isn't (this was months ago) because there isn't anything to make GMod on i.e. a flagship title with the basic engine, I think.
You wouldn't make GMod on the Left 4 Dead branch of Source, because it's a branch, and thus not the main engine. You'd need to use the original trunk, in Source's case it's Half-Life, and currently the latest Source trunk is the Orange Box or HL2:Episode 2 if you want a specific game.
If Valve made Episode 3 I would say that would be the new trunk for Source 2. Perhaps they will bring out a different game, maybe not, but GMod was essentially built on HL2's engine and has to be to keep working.
This wasn't the thread for it I know but I thought I'd give some extra information

Ah so Half Life 3 = Garry's Mod 2
Cool.

I don't think you understand. If HL3 or EP3 was to come out for source 2, it would be a branch of the Source 2 engine. Meaning that engine would be modified in a way that is fit for the game play.
Half Life 3 could be on Source 2, but that is left to speculation. There is nothing to confirm that Half Life 3 = Source 2 = Garry's Mod 2.
Your idea is ambitious, and it could be done. Using the same idea that Gmod tower 2 is built upon, you will need multiple servers hosting different sections of the map. And this will probably upset people switching servers to get to other sections of the map. Otherwise, to make it on 1 map alone, like you've read before, just not going to happen.
If you want the largest RP map for Gmod, you will have to look into Evocity2. Which has its own host of issues with it. There is only one version of it that has a day/night cycle (v3p) but, good luck trying to make that work. Since the map has a form of DRM in it, and will remove certain entities upon execution (when certain flags arent met).

Not quite. It's entirely up to Valve if they make a "general" version for Source 2, rather than making a flagship game. This is why I said "Maybe, maybe not", because they may make a new game, or maybe just have a "base" engine for modders and game creators to use. This would possibly be the best route to go for in terms of a GMod 2, but if Garry had to use a base game, it would have to be a game that set the "basis" of all the branches. L4D2 is a branch of HL2, as is Alien Swarm, Counter-Strike, etc. They're essentially Valve's heavy mods of Half-Life, but lets not go there

That is what I was thinking, different sections. I might go about getting a team to help out with making all sections and hopefully get community support to fund it.
