Hi, guys!
I've begun working on a huge city-map for Gmod and I would like you to suggest features, you want to see in the map.
The setting is a modern, but not futuristic city with many highrise office- and residential buildings (mostly exteriors, because of the engine limits).
The concept is relatively basic at the moment, so there is still plenty of room for new ideas and features.
The map is going to be a multi-purpose-map (gm_), so please suggest gamemode-specific features only if they don't have an impact on the default sandbox-gameplay...
Features, that are planned already:
- Big, open city
- Many Skyscrapers
- Lots of custom content
- good AI-noding
- 3D skybox
- Parks between the buildings
- Many roads
- Lots of eastereggs
- Possibly elevators to the rooftops...

Feel free to contact me on Steam or about my Homepage, if you have further questions...
Those building designs are very nice.
Make it nightime with lights.
It would look cool!

Oh my god, Freakrules, yes.
I got excited when I saw those city textures of yours you posted on your steam account.
Anyways, I hope you're planning on adding alleyways. Those were some of my favorite parts about gm_bigcity.
Can you possibly include some dark corridors? I always liked the sort of interior area on gm_Bigcity, but most were dead ends. It'd be a neat way of easily getting from one place to another without getting lost on the streets.
i was always scared that a fast zombie or something would attack me in that red car park (?) area
Think you can make an awesome and complex road network? Big city's was just kinda meh. Also vegetation and some green areas would ne really nice. De_vertigo from Cs:Go has some props and textures you could use... >.>

I tried that, and the props would show up blank in Hammer's model viewer.
As for a suggestion, how about a multi-storey parking garage?

I'll develop the map with a day-setting, but a nighttime-adaption should be possible without too much effort.

I probably won't add much interior, but I'll add a lot of walkways and shortcuts on the ground-level, like walls you can climb over, passages trough buildings, alleyways (yes, dark ones too ;D) and stuff.

I'll try to make the roads as authentic as possible. Of course, I'll need to see how I can handle it with the engine-limits...
De_vertigo from Cs:Go has some props and textures you could use
I'll probably stick to th HL2-content as usual. If I'd include GO-content, a lot of people would not be able to play the map since they lack the content...

An authentic city has some parks too of course. I'll brobably add one or two big parks, but also some vegetation around the city...
Please put some height variation in the terrain. I hate maps that are just entirely flat.
And make some cool highway and road overpasses.
Please dont make it just a grid type road system like bigcity.
Are you thinking about adding one or a few car-tunnels as well? That would be pretty cool.
Of course, I wouldn't really mind if you didn't add them, but it's just a suggestion.
Also can you ad one of those window washer platforms? I love those things.

Not easy, but I'll think of something to also include some underpasses in the map, Maybe even Tunnels, but I'll see hot I can handle the engine limits

I'll try my best to make a diversified road-system. I'll build it more or less modular though...

Why not, good idea. The map will have tons of sniper-spots anyways...
I once managed to make a map (which i never released/showed) to have interesting roads, with overpasses and ramps and things.
The building materials look beautiful.. I'm honestly quite jelly.
You could also maybe try doing some fancy highway stuff if it won't take too much space, take my WIP for example:

EDIT: Possibly a marina with a park around it too, for people to relax and whatever to break up the density?
Just tossing in more ideas while I'm here.

(Took the photo myself BTW.) :3

That looks extremely awesome, fantastic job :D
If I had the capacities, I'd probably do something like that too, but again it's probably the engine-limits that well keep me from including so much detail.
As soon as I have a basic layout, I'll do exact calculations on how much geometry I can use on every object on the map, so I can get the maximum amount of detail and size out of the engine...
EDIT:
Marina is good. Realistic, useful for the Gameplay, big and it doen't take a lot of geometry to make...

Wow that's awesome. How did you do those? I'm making highways for my new map aswell but I've never dreamt of making it so complex and beautiful

It's not too hard to do, from what it looks like. Now a guard rail would be a bit more difficult.
A clover leaf wouldn't be hard, it would just take a lot of time.
add a subway and some sewers
bonus points if the train actually works
MAke sure you propper at least some of the roads lest you run out of brushes.
I guess you will do it but ambient city sounds would be nice, prehaps even some pigeons moving around (a prop dynamic on a track, npc is too killable)
