As a newb (not noob) to Hammer, I want to try editing maps for myself, starting with construct, but I can't seem to find it. How do I find the files, so then I can turn them into .vmf then edit them in Hammer?
Don't start with editing maps, start with making them for yourself. Think of a theme and try and build something up.
Yeah, I agree. You will only confuse yourself with stuff that will be in pre made maps. Just start with building a room, then learn how to properly connect more rooms with halls. Then add doors. There are plenty of very good tutorials on YouTube. Just search source sdk hammer tutorials. Using large pre built maps will also require compiling, which can take a VERY long time, if you're only making small changes it won't be worth the wait.

Alright, then decompiling the map is a-okay. I do suggest doing what IronPhoenix and Meekal said above, however.
