This is an old, outdated topic. Look over here, it's newer and nicer! http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1294690&p=41652346#post41652346
TTT_Mars_Colony

Backstory 2051: Earth is running out of resources, and the human race has developed enough technology to quickly travel between the planets of Solar system, starting the era of extraterrestrial colonization. The first and most suitable planet for this project was Mars. The map is set in 2059, and the corporations responsible for Mars colonization are racing for the planet's domination. Rivals TIC [Terres Industries Corporation] and HMC [Heger Mining Company] are one of these groups. HMC has decided to solve this conflict, forever - By destroying the TIC colony, while masking it as a terrorist attack. HMC has hired several mercenaries to perform this task. Their goal is to destroy the colony using a timed nuclear explosive, disguised as rest of it's inhabitants. However, the nuclear explosive was detected on their arrival, so the group had to kill the colony's airstrip guards and blend among the colonists. Since the explosive has been confiscated before the conflict, they have a to find a new way how to accomplish their mission.

The Map Players have access to about 40% of the colony, mostly it's aboveground part. These areas are: Air and Water processing plant, offices, lower class dormitories, sewers, warehouse and laboratories. I'm putting quite a lot of detail in the map, so hopefully, it'll be worth the weight.

Screenshots

Feedback would be welcome! (This thread has been reworked on 10.7.2013, so older posts may not make sense.)
Looks way better than your average TTT map, but why would there be 2004 era electronics in a base on mars? If you make an updated version of this map, I think you can make it look even better if you used more appropriate props. You could for example stick some ME and/or Evocity props in there to give it a futuristic look.
Well, I lack the props and proper modelling skills, so I have to use basic CS:S and HL2 stuff. But thanks for the tip, I'll try replacing the props with more suitable ones. :D
I can't model either, but you definitely can just download some props, put them in the map, and then just pakrat it up.
The lighting looks a tad funky to me. I don't think it would be that neutral. The lighting should be warm, especially because of all the skylights. EDIT: it should look orange, very orange.
That outdoor part is illuminated by a floodlight because of the shadows, so it looks quite white. Here's a proper screenshot of it. :p
wtf are those lights Mars is supposed to be pitch black with a chance of being eaten by demons in all serousness, great job on the exterior architecture. the interiors look a bit flat tho; more varied lighting and colors could help a lot speaking of colonies, has anyone made a proper Hadley's Hope map with outside areas and shit? that place would be great for TTT
Hadley's Hope would be an amazing map indeed. Imagine Hidden on that place, too!
I think it looks good in general but I would mess with textures a bit along with the lighting. Things that come to mind when looking at pictures: * Outside rock models should be made a tad bit more red (if you need someone to recompile the models so you can change the texture send me a PM) * Lighting in the hallways could be a bit darker (it's a game about murder they need some dark shady spots!) * Inside looks a little to clean, you got the outside looking dusty shouldn't the inside have some dirt here and there?

I'll probably do that. :) * Lighting in the hallways could be a bit darker (it's a game about murder they need some dark shady spots!) There are some dark spots in the industrial area and vents. * Inside looks a little to clean, you got the outside looking dusty shouldn't the inside have some dirt here and there? - Well, I'll put overlays around the map's exterior / modify the texture once I start doing the details. However, inside of the building is going to be clean as it's pretty much isolated from the outside.
Also, sorry for the broken shadows / misaligned textures. Stuff breaks when I tweak a lot with it. :o
Looks great!
looks good, whens the release/eta? try dystopia or neotokyo for some sci fi ish models
Thanks for the feedback! Also, the ETA is sometime this month.
Brushwork and texturework needs some more attention. Sci-fi themed architecture is usually very elaborate and massive; you'll probably end up using a lot of trims for textures and func_detailing/proppering a lot of brushwork. That being said though, you're off to a good start.

I'm trying to keep the filesize under 65MB packed with custom stuff. Regarding the architecture, the industrial and scientific areas are more futuristic looking, while offices have flatter walls and are generally more simple. Also, does anyone have a link to Evocity's materials? I've been searching for it, but no luck. I've only found some models.

Already downloaded that, only includes server-specific files - Cars, playermodels and such.
Oh, sgt. sgt. hasn't released the materials and he isn't planning to
I really like the art style of the map. Looks a lot more like realism than over-the-top scifi.
Already downloaded that, only includes server-specific files - Cars, playermodels and such.
if the materials are packed into the bsp you can just open the bsp with gcfscape and extract them
Well, I dislike the fact that I'm taking their materials without asking / not being sure if the creator agrees with it. Also, I'm considering rebuilding the entire map in order to optimize it better. Damn the slow computers. :/
Also, I'm considering rebuilding the entire map in order to optimize it better. Damn the slow computers. :/
Starting from scratch is a great thing to do! It allows you to go over and see what you can directly improve on: optimization, detail, map layout.
if the materials are packed into the bsp you can just open the bsp with gcfscape and extract them
With sgt sgt it is a good idea to ask him for that kinda stuff. He has people steal maps from him in the past, so it would be courteous to ask.
Looks really nice. How long have you been working on it?
3 months, usually 2-3 hours per day.
I've decided to severely change the exterior architecture of the colony. I was thinking about it, and it was really underdeveloped. What have the colonists been doing for the 21 years? There could have been a city already. So now, it's going to be sort of a colonist city, with elevated glass covered tracks for cars, smallish skyscrapers and other buildings.
Does this remind anyone else of the first Red Faction? I really like the map. Outstanding work.
Does this remind anyone else of the first Red Faction? I really like the map. Outstanding work.
Thanks, I've played Red Faction II and Red Faction Guerrilla, so it's a little inspired by it. :p
And even in the future and on Mars, they still use Windows XP...
