• hammer keeps forcing my computer to shut down

I've recently decompiled a venator map, and extracted the textures and was doing some work on it(mostly just modifying rooms and removing things I didn't want and switching around textures to make it look better. no extra textures were added) and when I finished I went to run map and it was going for about 10 seconds then suddenly my PC shuts down. I tried about 13 times to get it to compile the map but it keeps shutting down. kinda my first time using hammer but I made sure to use the right program for extracting textures and decompiling (bspsrc and GCFScape) and I watched a few vids before attempting however it just crashes when trying to compile
Your CPU is probably getting too hot and shutting itself off.
nah, I ran it at stock speeds after giving it 2 hours too cool down after about the 5th time. I've been playing the game and my server at the same time on 1 rig with about 8 players on the server pluss me on it along with a music player and such. I had alot going on with it. however when I was running hammer it was the only thing open, nothing else and had been given a fresh 2 hour cool down since it last did the shut down issue. and this is all on liquid cooling aswell. heating is very unlikely to be the issue with it. the map I was modifying was rp_venator_prominent_b1(its from a server I played on alot for a while) I essentially switched around some textures that are all already in the map already and I added the room from the shooting range that was taken out and I removed a single room. that is the only thing I did at all, nothing else that major to the map

But VVIS and other compile tools hit CPU very hard, much harder than just running a SRCDS and hl2.exe instance will. You can try reducing some of the CPU load by adding -low to the expert compile options. [vid]https://s.gvid.me/s/2017/06/20/YT0484.webm[/vid]
hmmm, I did notice CPU hit full 100%. is there a way to also limit how many cores it is allowed to use aswell?

Try compiling with VBCT or Compile Pal instead of hammer.
Software being able to completely overencumber your system energy-wise is ALWAYS due to faulty hardware (unless it's some kind of BIOS malware or something but asdf), using a less intense compiler could work, but then you've still not fixed the actual problem, without knowing anything else about the system it may even be a power supply issue, and then you may suddenly find yourself having a very bad day. Download HWMonitor and check the temperatures, if it's due to heat it could be that the cooler's not installed properly, that the thermal paste's too old, or that your radiator's clogged up with dust
I guess I can go into detail about my systems environment and anything possibly related to hammer aswell. and I will say my rig has some odd parts in it but I have made sure to ensure stability of it and for the most part it is pretty stable. only hammer is causing me problems. I was using a program for monitoring temps, was hitting 46.3c before the crashing. as for the hardware I'm using it is a FX8150 @5.8(cooling solution being a custom waterloop using copper pipes instead of tubes with 3 peltier modules spliced in with a old car radiator mounted in to it. don't ask it was just a experiment I felt like testing out to see if it could work and it pretty much did) the cooling kit for the CPU however is a regular waterblock, rad, copper pipe ect. cooling shouldn't be any issue for it. the power supply is a 800W silver I believe. running the rig on a chrosshair v formula z motherboard, the 2 GPUs are both RX 460s(yes I know a 470 is better but they were both free gifts so not really any choice I made) the VRMs on the mobo have a little bit of extra cooling, the ram is 16gb@1866mhz, and the storage devices on it are a 250gb SSD for windows, 2x500gb HDDs for steam games, a 160gb hdd for user folders such as downloads(also this drive is used for my gmod server) and a 80gb drive for garrys mod itself along with hammer. the hammer program is on the 80gb and the vmf file for the map is on the 160gb drive. [editline]21st June 2017[/editline] so far I have done both the setting affinity for the process and it seems to have only allowed 4 of the 8 cores to be used for it(I was thinking that using the "-threads 4" would be needed but apparently not) and setting the -low command as well. the cpu is hitting exactly 50% usage and I'm still able to type this while its working on the map. it says (Not responding) on the window however but the cpu is still hitting 50% is this normal aswell? is it actually doing anything in the background despite the not responding thing?

However, it's still not Hammer that causes it to die, something's off with your system, and after having pushed it to the limit like that, there are lots and lots of potential causes

It's probably getting stuck on Vvis since it's a decompiled map, and VVIS absolutely 'hammers' CPUs, and that was causing your CPU to overheat/overvolt until it shut off. [editline]23rd June 2017[/editline] But to be sure we'll need logs from VVIS, so grabbing and using VBCT, command line, or another batch program is what you should do.
