Hi FacePunch Users, INTRODUCTION: My name is Patrick Nett. I've been playing games since I was roughly 10 years old. I am now 23 (24 next month!) and still playing casually in my off-time. I currently own a local restaurant and I like to jokingly call myself a degenerate gambler because I frequent the casino as that's my favorite hobby. I also like to play poker and the card game Magic: the Gathering and I consider myself a 'grinder' for both of those games. I like to think I'm friendly and easy to work with, so I hope that encourages you to work with me! MY STORY/WHAT I NEED: A little over a year ago I made a post about needing a custom map made for my custom game mode on here. I found someone (he was great!) but things came up and I got really busy. I did get the chance to pay him some money which I'm glad because I don't like wasting anyone's time, but the project was never able to get completed. Now that I've got some more free time to spare again, I came only to find out that he's no longer interested in mapping and has moved on with his life. So now I'm here seeking a mapper who is experienced, friendly (important), and highly motivated. I wrote $500+ because I would like to think $500 is an average amount I want to pay for this map. I may agree to a lower amount if you have less experience, credentials, and lack a portfolio, but I also may agree to a higher the amount if you have massive amounts of experience and a nice portfolio. $500 is really just an expected number I'm putting out there, and I prefer to negotiate with you outside this forum. DETAILS OF MAP: I don't have an exact layout, I actually would like to build the map with you as we go. But I will give you a small idea of what I'm looking for so you can decide if the job is right for you. I like the layout of the map called RP_C18. I want my map to be similar to C18 but using modern textures like in Rockford and making the map automobile friendly (my game mode will have cars). What I mean by similar to C18 is I like the idea of the general 'hangout' area that RP players will be at which in c18 is referred to as the "plaza" and everything is easy access around it. There are many stores, apartments, etc. I also like the idea of having a lot of roleplay above the general area where people can be at higher ground and cross bridges and stuff. The CPs even have their own little "sniper tower" which is the highest spot in the game and can see the entire plaza which I think is great. Then there's also other parts of the map that are more hidden and secretive which is great for the grinders who are trying to just stay away from most people and farm. Like I said, I don't have a layout, but I have a general idea of what I want and I would just like to discuss with a mapper of how big and complex we can make the map, but as simple as possible for the end-users. DEADLINE: There's not really a set deadline, but obviously I'd like to make one for contracting purposes. I don't want to be stuck in a loophole where someone disappears on me for several months :P. It would have to stay within the 180 day dispute range of PayPal so if there's any problems from either party's we can get help. I will probably try to negotiate a deadline to be completed within 1 to 2 months. I'm not looking for someone to take this up as a side job, I would like to find someone who has a lot of free time and can focus and make this project a priority. I can give out my phone # or e-mail to be able to answer questions quickly regarding the map so that you're not stuck waiting for me to show up online prolonging the project. PAYMENT: Payment will be via PayPal only. The only exception is if you actually happen to live close enough to me that we can meetup and do cash. If everything looks good on your end, you have a solid reputation and a good portfolio I don't mind doing 50/50 before/after and am willing to discuss other forms of payment, like 25/25/25/25 as the project goes on. If you have little to no reputation or portfolio I will only pay you as I see work progressing and we can later discuss how we'll go about doing that after we negotiate a price. CONCLUSION: I don't think I left anything out. If you have any questions please feel free to reply with them. You can PM me your Steam name if you're interested in the project and we can talk there to negotiate a deal. I'm quite easy to work with, and I can try and get my previous mapper to verify on here that I am not a scam. Please either have a good reputation on FacePunch or be ready to have some vouchers like I do who have more than 10 posts on here. Thank you for reading my post, looking forward to working with you! :)
I just gotta say, this is a very good example of how to request work. Hope you find someone who fits like a condom!
Thank you Shirky! I try to be as clear and professional as possible. I feel if I don't put in good effort to making a request, no one will take me seriously and I won't get any good offers. I hope I find someone too, preferably someone who can fit better than my condoms...they're too big for me :(
Heya. I've been working in the Source Engine for probably around 6 years now, and started taking my mapping pretty seriously over the past 2 or so years. I know the in's and out's of the Engine pretty well at this point, and have uploaded several maps to the workshop, of which I will link in this post. I don't visit Facepunch very often (I was linked this from someone I'm helping learn Hammer Editor), and I created this account just now for this request, so I don't have a reputation linked to Facepunch. My only concern with the request is the amount of custom textures you want. I personally tend to stay away from custom textures because they can be a pain to set up make look good, and they make map files very large very fast. Because of this my custom texture library isn't very large. Thanks for replying to my post, I'll add you shortly and we can chat. Thank you!
No custom textures for a $500 product? Because they're a "pain to set up make look good"? You and one of your references have VAC bans?
1. I never said I wouldn't use custom textures. I just said I haven't used custom textures much in the past, so my custom texture library isn't very large. That is not to say I don't have the proper know-how or ability to use them. I've been in contact with Patrick and I've already gotten a substantial library of custom textures. I personally don't like most of them because they're generally bland to me, and don't look very good in most lighting. 2. I got the VAC ban because (over 6 years ago, mind you) I shared my account with someone I knew. He liked playing CS:S and either used an achievement hack, or was on a server with someone else who used an achievement hack on February 28'th, 2011 (you can look it up on my account. A large number of achievements were attained on February 28'th, 2011 at 9:07 AM). My account was thus caught in a wave of bans on April 6th, 2011. I'm very open about my VAC status to anyone who asks. Regarding Don's ban, I'm not quite sure how he got his ban, but I think it may have been an error in the VAC system. It's far from perfect. He owns a chain of servers, and several people I have on my friends list that play on his servers got hit with a VAC ban. They're pretty confused about why.
Imo, VAC bans mean almost nothing for mappers. It just means you cheated in a game and got caught. Also as far as custom textures go, You can get a bunch of great ones from Left 4 Dead 2, as well as find stuff in my texture thread. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1281063
