Its completly black and the console spouts VMT errors, i've got a screenshot somewhere

I'd suggest putting the following phong parameters in marine_v3.vmt and seeing what happens:
$phong "1"
$phongexponent "5"
$phongboost "0.7"
$phongfresnelranges  "[1 1 30]"
$phongalbedotint "1"
