This kind of thing annoys me. Honest devs and businesses taken down by some sweaty child who got angry because someone killed him and raided his base most likely. I'll keep playing. Til the end 👌
Think it has more to do with banned kids that are now salty because they can not play the game, and now giving ddos so they feel good by seeing all messages of others that "can not play officials"
Facepunch - you guys need to get an in-house network security engineer. Somebody who understands DDOS mitigation (using tools like PeakFlow SP from Arbor Networks).
Or, look into partnering with a company like Akamai or CenturyLink who actually have really good DDOS mitigation infrastructures.
Source - am a network security engineer who does DDOS mitigation.
Thanks to your work, you should know how much this would cost for 1 server.
Now look how many servers they have.
Look how much this would cost for 1 year.
Think about how much they update, and how stable Rust runs compaired to other games. (you don't need high-end pc to run max settings, no big glitches)
Think about the time it takes for that guy to maintain the servers, and how much this would cost.
You think they are able to keep updating like this, pay their personel, and upgrade every server to ddos protected infrastructures?
And you should also be aware, that even with ddos protection, there will always be a ddos-related way to bring the server down as long botnet exsists.
After downtime all your bases are decayed.
Good lack, and play on official servers!
I only play officials...
I'd rather take random DDOS, then admins abusing powers, noclipping and spawning items for ppl...
Not sure if your just trolling or serious. But if you are serious you really need an examination
So, you are implying that all servers are that way?
Sure there a couple server that arent admin abusing, but there are just to many server to find these.
And so, because people refuse to look out for their own better interest automatically Officials are the way to go? Uh..yea
statistically speaking - yes.
And no I dont imply that "all" community servers have admin abuse. But there is a % threshold that for me makes it not worth the risk.
Its a personal choice, for me, if there is even 10% risk that an admin might abuse (and Im pretty convinced that the % of servers with admin abuse is much higher) - then I won't touch it.
Its kind of like investing money. If there is a certain % risk that I will lose money (say 30%, just as an example) I would not invest.
I think (personally - to stress one more time, personally) more then 50% of community servers have admin abuse (that still makes 50% who are "good and honest") - but for me that number is just waaaay too high to take the risk.
He might got raided or someone killed him with a rock while he has an ak
rust community is ruined by the minors
you guys really should find something to prevent them from playing
like ban anyone who confirmed to be minor
i know it take time and you will lose some of the players
but it really going to make cleaner and better game so the others can buy it and enjoy playing it
this cancers community and your updates are pushing the players away
Now i will lose my base and my things on Eu1 server duo to this kid
Hope you will hear us and clean the community
I would agree with you mostly except for the fact that on the first day of the wipe on us east 2 the server was deddosed for 5 hours my clan and me where joking that a naked man lost his spear and started doddsing the server their is no real way they can fix this but still is annoying
It's a double edged blade. If you don't acknowledge the DDoS your community hates you, if you do acknowledge the DDoS the kids with mom's credit card and a $5 booter wins.
I'll keep playing all the same! Thanks for the heads up Garry!
FFS... DDoSing is so lame.
Thanks for the transparency Facepunch. Hope you guys find an effective way to mitigate.
Minors are a large customer base i’d go as far to say above 15% of all players are below the age of 13. Blocking out an entire market for a product isn’t a good business move and in the end Rust is here for profit.
If you handle the bad traffic before it even gets to the customer network, botnets become less of a problem. I've scrubbed 300+gb in a single attack, with no negative impact to the destination host. The trick is for the DDOS mitigation system to sit on a service provider's AS and have a separate routing instance for the diverted traffic.
Honestly... In Brazil and south america, more specific the facepunch são paulo 1&2 servers, we had our servers attacked by ddos, and your team didnt did anything to help us, you guys simply closed the servers... So today we dont have official servers, time passed anything happened, all what I can tell to you is fuck you, because you guys are assholes, when It happens in europe you make a long statement, say that you will work on it, and when it happens in Brazil you simply doesnt give a fuck, doesnt write a single word, you simple ignored us, then you deserve all those troubles as a karma punishment.
Can you have a official server for players with X amount of hours? The reason is that these cheaters who buy software to get superman powers always change to another account after VAC ban. This happened to me this time, as you game is 10-20 USD, some rich kid buys 20 copies and just changes account to grief more on same server. I had a few steam friends who stopped playing, because of the cheaters. So to sum up my suggestion is to have 6-7 high population servers from your pool of servers for players with X (ex .200 hours) in the game, or harvested X amount X.
Your current plan will not work, I spent 5 days getting scrap with another player, built a couple bases only to get destroyed by obvious guys using cheat software. Then the server goes offline while the base decays. I want to play on official with other players who do not or never have used ESP type software. I could then justify the grind to get blueprints, workbench 3, etc. I only get to play rust a couple times a year, and what a disappointment the last 5 days have been. Hope you get the ddos stuff figured out.
It would have to be a lot broader than that. What would stop them from just staying logged on for the pre requisite hours and when they achieve that boom, they are back at it
I agree, we haven’t been great at managing the servers while we’ve been in Early Access. It’s something we want to get much better at going forward.
lol "someone killed him with a rock while he has an ak"
I think that's what happened
Rust stats has been working for quite some time. Good place to start, X amount of X along with X amount of hours to log onto a specific server. Even if it was'nt implemeted on official, but having a setting available for community servers I would make me play and just cross my fingers that the admin isn't a dick. I would even consider hosting a high end server somewhere if the setting was a option. Seems like a easy fix to end a good chunk of the cheats once and for all. They can all play with the other 5y olds.
Garry. I think if you make horses ride-able in Rust that will make all the DDOS problems go await, therefore all efforts should go towards this. There is a section in RFC 4732 that goes into better detail as to why this is science.
As you had stated the business and thousands of your customers are suffering. Take a stance like the larger devs have recently. Track down the source of the problem (person or persons) and sue. Set an example.
Its not that eassy to find out who is ddosing and just sue them since they probably dont use their own IP :P
Developers, sorry for raging. Thanks for working. We are with you. We are waiting <3
