I don't know much about how this works behind the scenes, but some websites, when you open then on Android in chrome and use "Add to home screen", the home screen icon behaves like an app rather than opening a new tab in chrome. Here is an example video showing it working with https://0hn0.com: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/767/7b8017e5-3221-47cf-af14-0b30a509d3ff/mobizen_20180127_105301.mp4 (ugh, uploads are broken on Android too... I'll upload to YouTube in a bit and embed it here) It would be nice if this was done for facepunch. The main advantage is that it entirely gets rid of the address bar.
You need a manifest.json I think
Bump, I still want this.
bumping again because the manifest still works
bumping again, please add this
Let's make the forums actually usable on mobile first
About this: Progressive web apps work on all platforms, including desktop ones. Windows 10's next big update will give them a big push: Welcoming Progressive Web Apps to Microsoft Edge and Windows 10 I made this thread before the big update that discarded the mobile view. According to posts above, this takes very little effort - which @MPan1 banned has already done - so there's nothing to lose really by doing this now.
Is there a reason this would be preferable to using Facepunch Droid?
Any reason to invest time into making a progressive Web application for Windows 10 instead of say Using a Web browser
No time investment. Didn't mean for anything Windows-specific to be done, I was just using it as an example that web apps aren't just for mobile. Facepunch would just need to tell browsers "hey, if you want to use me as a web app, that would be fine, I can do that", nothing else about the website needs to change.
