That's fine, but since this is the default, it both has to fit the eye of the designer, as well as appeal to the users of the platform, to at least the majority.
First impressions are always critical for retaining new users, based on feedback already provided, it's quite negative already.
Regardless if the forum had options to run a custom style sheet. If a lot of users have to enable custom styles to make the webpage comfortable, the design would be considered flawed at best
It hurts my eyes to look at even while wearing my glasses. Why would you make the text that small? Just use two columns if you want more forums on the front page.

What I don't like about it is how it's small then it enlarges everything when you click a link.
I really like how small the post text is now. I really don't like how small the main page text is though.

I'm weird and prefer viewing forums zoomed out, but ignoring the jarring effect on existing users it still seems it'll be a tad too small for quite a lot of people. No problems for me, though.

Main page everything is small and then you got for example to the {{Meta}} everything is bigger again, what happened to having stuff in uniform?
