• Is the upkeep system killing player interaction?

So, i joined in october 2017, the wipe before the upkeep update, i was fresh meat and i got helped by a veteran, i realised how fun it was to interact with other people (especially nakeds) so i made a shop and made a little hotel system, it was fun. But now, hotels are even more rare than before, i wanted to make one but i don't have the time to farm for a big base, a shop or an hotel, i have to make a fully functional base and not waste space, wich is sad since this mechanic is killing roleplayers, to find hotels and fun stuff you have to go on a modded server, why? Rust is a survival game, the community made it more and more pvp, there is nothing wrong with that, but mechanics that discourage player interaction is meh. I'm not angainst upkeep, i find it a good mechanic, but it is too expensive. ROLEPLAYER LIVES MATTER
Upkeep means you have to grind. Which you do out in the world. No.
Sorry, I don't get it. What do you mean?
What don't you understand? The part where all teams have to continually farm in the open world for resources to keep up with upkeep or....? I mean that's really it. Pretty basic concept.
Tokee, your dumbass attitude is not needed since his post flew right over your head. He clearly stated what he meant my "player interaction" and you jumped off into left field like a PMSing woman. Your reply to him also was also wrong. Maybe try to use that half meatball bouncing around in your head and re-read what he posted... What the hell does hitting nodes have to do with interacting with people in a shop or running a hotel?! FFS you cant be serious
Thanks for answering for me, I couldn't even find words for that
Im not a fan of the new system. Im a solo player, at most ill play duo and it has completely discouraged me from playing rust now. I quit playing justsurvive to play rust as the dev team is always fixing and updating...well now they went overboard and i cant get anything done unless i spend a minimum of 6 hours. And still then, id be extremely lucky to get c4, rockets, launcher and metal gear. Its just wayyyyyyyyy to grindy so ill just stop playing until it is changed/buffed/tweaked. There is alot of solo or small groups (2-3) quitting right now because the grind is insane. I like vanilla but since 3.0 ive been basically forced to play modded which i dont want to. But its that or no-life all day to have a decent base...all for a zerg to still come blow into it while im offline. All in all, tc upkeep is garbage and im totally good on spending my whole day sitting on rust to grind up mats and worry about my base not being there in the AM.
Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say I don't like the upkeep system. I've been playing since early 2014, and Upkeep has killed a lot of my more interesting survival tactics. As a solo player, it was once profitable to make small stores to run. Now they have to be an extension of your base, and you just wind up being raided over it. I hope upkeep is either massively overhauled or removed. I've given it time, and it just isn't clicking.
yes, because "unfortunately" in order to balance Rust vs zergs (zergs in PVP and base raiding and/or "offlining" specifically) - upkeep had to be introduced. As a side effect - you now cannot build big, and therefore you cannot build a "big hotel" unless you are on a custom modded server. (maybe build a small motel?) Why? Because this is how life works. Its like me trying to roleplay in CS:GO and run around trying to "offer other players weapons for sale" - it just won't work, because CSGO is not that type of game. Rust has some room for roleplaying (keyword = some), but that room will always be limited by the main purpose of the game - that is being a "survival MMO" (yes one M is crossed out). Technically if we get all philosophical about it - you don't need "hotels" to survive. Its nice and cool (and I support creative builders), but due to zergs and offlining (and also better performance and direction towards "wipeless" Rust) upkeep had to be introduced. Im simply trying to answer your question and explain why.
Hi Guerriero111, I fall in to the category of players that likes the upkeep system, but I think you bring up some valid concerns. Despite my approval for the system, I am totally open minded to the need for the Devs to make some tweaks and changes to it. Something I would like to see is an item (akin to the Vending Machines or Dropboxes) that functions either as a lock or a door from one side that anyone can open provided they pay a certain designated cost. For folks that want to rent a hotel room or cross a player made bridge across a lake or the like, they'd have to effectively pay the owner to do so, and the owner could then reinvest that payment (if payment is specified in resources) in to the upkeep of the building.
That is a rather interesting! Allowing some function that will allow them to put stuff into a TC, but without having access to it. Thar would make hotels viable again. The only way I can think of for a show to exist right now, and to keep track who paid is to set up the one way drop boxes in such a way that it is connected to each "hotel room".
I don't get what you meen ... it's still viable to make "little" stores. A 2x2 full metal will cost around 600frags a day. U can put 3k in and you are good for 5 days. The same expension to your base would cost probably 3 times that. Its more profitable then ever to have a few small bases instead than a huge one.
Hey ppl of this thread, This would be something I would really like to see implemented, I am usually a serious rust player but i love to relax sometimes and roleplay. This idea would be really good for Hotels, as you said. There could be an attachment on the TC, or something connected to it via wall or magic, which would need a "Rent" to be payed to enable access to doors with the same code as the TC or in the TC's building area. if you ppl have anything to add to this please doooooo, thankss
I agree, it costs too much. I don't dislike the system, I actually like that it makes you think a little more about how much you're expanding (and has actually probably saved me from getting raided since overbuilding and making myself a target has been an issue of mine as a mostly solo player), but it seems like it maybe costs a tad too much. I wouldn't want to see it reduced by a severe amount but maybe a little bit might make it feel a bit better.
Agreed this does sound like a good idea. However, we need to think of ways this could potentially be abused. Remember, whenever a new feature is added Rust, it has the potential to be unbalance and abused. The thing is...I really can't think of a way that it could be...
