I have heard so many people complaining about how bad servers are. So im really wondering. What is a good Darkrp server?
One that isn't ran by retarded kids, abusive admins and doesn't use an overload of Coderhire scripts which people seem to think makes their server 'better'. Also donate4admin. god no
There really isn't a good DarkRP server out there. If it has "looking for admins", "custom content", or "30+ jobs" in the server name, it's going to be a bad server. I also wouldn't bother playing a server that has more than 64 slots, source starts to act strange if you have more 64 players on a server. If the server is running any version of downtown that isn't rp_downtown_v2, then find a different server. There's a 99% chance that edit of downtown doesn't have optimization brushes in place, therefore your computer is having to use more resources than necessary. Add that with a cluster of high-polygon cars and expect very low fps. Same goes for edits of any map, find a server using an original map.
If you want a good DarkRP server, right click on the DarkRP folder, and click "Delete". Seriously though, there are too many DarkRP servers now.
A server that isn't hosting DarkRP.

Unique features is a big one, but you should also have friendly staff and preferably no coderhire scripts (they are a big no-no around here). This goes for all servers out there and not just the ones with DarkRP. Frequent events are usually good to have and as others in this thread have already said; don't have "pay4admin". If you do accept donations, make sure that people don't get unfair advantages by purchasing them. It will drive away more people than what you will get by having it that way. It's better to have for instance reserved slots and perhaps special forum ranks etc. Make sure that whatever you get by donating is something that you can also earn. DarkRP has been done to death with bad servers for so long that people nowadays assume that a server is bad rather than try it out first (the way they are presented is usually bad, so I don't blame them). So if you are going to advertise, make sure that you have what I stated above before you do. Look through successful threads in this forum and try to get some ideas from them. What made them good? What am I missing? Listen to what the players want. Some gameplay videos from your server are always good to have in the thread as well.
unique doesn't really mix well with darkrp when people typically steal unique ideas to make money on coderhire
Before coderhire there was less darkrp server since you had to be a coder to CODE things for it. Now its easy as plopping addons in a folder and calling your server custom. I suggest you play on byb its one of the few servers left that have downtown v2 with a decent population.
In my honest opinion I dislike byb, it joins in with the buy admin routine.
I think a darkrp not run by children would be a good idea if you absolutely feel the need to play darkrp. Oh wait, every darkrp is run by children.
People have given good feedback about my server: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1345416 48 slots running on Locality with a good bit of customization. Not just "I installed custom playermodels" customization. No donation benefits. Unfortunately it lost its playerbase that was taking hold. I got overwhelmed with classes so I stopped playing for a while. We were having ~20 on a night for a week or so, about 10 other times.
The best way to run a dark rp server falls the same way to best run any server. 1. Get a group of willing people to work with you and brainstorm what is really needed and what would just be excessive fodder. 2. Build as you go. By this I mean there is no reason to start with a zillion addons and it gives you time to get views from potential regulars of what would be beneficial to add. 3. Pay attention to the people you add to ranks ect. By this I mean if you have abusive assholes that is all you'll attract. Same with laid back people. You can effectively partially mold your average player experience with your chosen active staff. 4. Dont pick a gamemode based on if it'll get you money/popularity pick it for whether your group will have fun on it as they'll be playing it long before it becomes popular enough to truly call it a community. 5. Do not change hosts/owners often as it will kill your base over and over again and you'll lose willing teammates. (I am above and beyond guilty of this.) Even without fast dl, addons, ranks, ect you can be popular. Just the right niche and the right group make it worthwhile for others.
As said, most DarkRP servers are run by children, the issue is not what that child can do but what he brings to the community. If the owner which in-fact is a child, will draw the attention of his other under aged friends and under aged general gmod players. Children will most likely be drawn to the servers with under aged owners because on servers where the owner is older than lets say 18-20 the child would be disowned for how young he is, but on servers where lets say the owner is 13 he would accept that child in and wouldn't harass him as much. This is where servers on gmod go downhill because when someone older than 16 joins and finds the community to be riddled with kids, he will leave because those kids will most likely be screwing around or trying to annoy each other. When servers get cluttered with children the server would most likely shut down or gain infamy.
