What is this?
A communal Dwarf Fortress playthrough where the participants take turns playing the game for an in-game year. Upon completion of their turn, the user uploads their save so the next person in line can [del]ruin[/del] add on to everything you've done. The goal is to basically just survive and work together, and become a part of something bigger than you or me.
Fortress Name: Atírbomrek - Dyewhipped
Group Name: Asmel Sheced - The Merchants of Carnality
We are using Orkel's balance fix, which you can read about at the bottom of the DF thread OP.
The population is capped at 90, with a child cap of 20.
The embark location is primarily a single biome (the one displayed in the screenshot below), with the second biome being identical to it (1x1 square at top left).
The bottom-right square(1x1) has a temperate climate, and "deep soil" instead of "very deep".
There is no flux stone, and no aquifer.
We have goblin neighbors.
I set out with:
2 miners, mason, generic crafter, farmer, axeman, marksdwarf/hunter
seeds, thread, cloth, bags, ropes, 2 picks, anvil, copper crossbow (20 bolts), 55 alcohol, 5 cave lobster, 2 buckets, some hens/turkeys/dogs/ducks (breeding pairs for all)
Rules
• Turns last a year, at which point you zip up your game and give it to the next person waiting
• Texture packs are allowed, but they are not alter the tile indices (phoebus, ironhand, etc)
----• Packs like Jolly Bastion, which are derivatives of the ASCII tileset, are perfectly fine
----• I'm personally using the square ASCII pack (direct download).
• When your turn comes, you have a maximum of 24 hours to respond to the thread (i'll PM you when it's your turn) or you'll get skipped.
----• If you get skipped, but respond before "the person who took your spot" completes their turn, you will be allowed to take your turn when they are done.
----• If you fail to comply again, you will not be allowed to take part any longer
• After your turn comes around and you've replied to the thread, you have 5 days to complete your turn.
• While playing your turn, you need to log notable events that occur. Pictures, and a small story of what happened are preferable.
• No using DFHack or other utilities to speed up production, reveal the map, or anything else that majorly alters the flow of gameplay. Using one to, say, clump a few commands into one isn't as bad however.
• No just fucking the world up on purpose. If it's your turn, don't go and channel the volcano right on the dwarves so they all die, or anything exceptionally bad like that.
----• If this is done, we will just skip your turn, and prevent you from further includement in the "project"

Slam me in for a turn anytime, plenty of free time as of late.
I may play at some point when I stop sucking at Dwarf Fortress.
Problem is that it is hard to tell when you stop sucking, since you usually lose horribly at the end.
But anyway, this will be interesting! May it turn out as hilarious and epic as Boatmurdered (which you should all go read immediately).
Haha it started me on a small ledge and we don't have a wagon.

While looking around, the embark location in order to find a good starting point, I marked out a few locations:

The river (lmao it looks like an arm)

In the end, I decided to start tunneling inwards at this outjut nearby where we embarked, and set a hotkey (F2) to the location.

This is starting out well.
Magic silver bolts out of nowhere
Try not quoting all the images in a post.
Add me to the list of players, I'd love to take a crack at a succession fort.
I'm up for this. Add me to the list.
Should we dorf people like in Boatmurdered?
Also, someone is going to need to build some sort of magma-flood doomsday device.
I'm tempted to have a go if I have time. Put me on the list and if I can't do it, I'll notify you so you can pass to the next person.
I'm more than happy to do some commentary and give a play by play, as long as I can figure out how to not fuck up the Magma. Naming dwarves is also a must, give us a list of who you have now and we'll pick.
Was busy playing and documenting. :v: I'm in mid-summer at the moment.

Added.
And here's the list:

Rovod - http://i.imgur.com/J3P3b.png
Dastot - http://i.imgur.com/oIUyg.png
I've got some rules ideas.
1. No using DFHack or other utilities to speed up production, reveal the map, or anything else that majorly alters the flow of gameplay. Using one to, say, clump a few commands into one isn't as bad however.
2. No just fucking the world up on purpose. If it's your turn, don't go and channel the volcano right on the dwarves so they all die, or anything exceptionally bad like that.
Oh god i just got new migrants too, eight of them.. (Galena 251)

I wanna be -snip-, the old fart of the lot.
No DFhack seems fair, we've got plenty of magma.
Ill take obok. And i like those rules.
Is dwarftherapist allowed?
Yeah it's fine. Also I'll take Rovod in that case, magic silver bolts and sleeping in the dirt yo.
Ill take obok. And i like those rules.
Is dwarftherapist allowed?
[editline]12th March 2012[/editline]
Ninja'd. Dastot then.
Someone else can be Stukos, I guess.
I want to be the guy engraving all the walls at least. :v:
-confused- obok it is then
I'll join in too! Will try to check frequently, but someone might need to shoot me a PM
Added your names to the dwarves (seiteki is now Mistem). Made some dude a broker, and gave out jobs to everyone. I'll have a more detailed log of everything when I finalize my turn.
This person (Iden Ginetstakud) could be a vampire lmao

Can I be added to the turn list, please?
Hopefully my PC will bear the strain without those foul mosquitos coming by the hundred. :v:
Mosquitoes were fixed, I believe.
Spring finally came, so here's the save: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?w4ta0pj227k0vj3
(Contains the whole folder, with orkel's fix and the square ASCII included.)
Feel free to check out the save to get a feel for the place and view it in person. It'll start paused on the first day of spring.
Here's a running log of mostly everything I did. I'll go back and rewrite it later, but for now this is a rundown of what happened:
Granite 251
First thing I did was scout out the general location to get a feel of the area. Then I decided to build the embark location on an outjut, northeast of the volcano. The hunter managed to find and slaugther a Cheetah. He also magically acquired silver bolts, as he was only given copper to begin with.

Slate 251
Built an entryway, and forced the mason to smooth the walls until we get his workshop set up. The hunter ran out of bolts, and I commanded the woodcutter to cut wood. Pretty sure the mason was smoothing some walls occasionally as well.
Felsite 251
Extended upon the entryway, moving the central staircase further south to make it "more central". Started to channel the rock above the outjut in order to give a flatter outside, as well as a little more space for the outside area. The diggers finally dug enough to allow a few necessary workshops to be built, so the dwarves will no longer have to sleep on the floor. I also created a temporary wood stockpile nearby the carpenter's workshop.
http://i.imgur.com/Xvz5G.png
Hematite 251
Created a farm, made some stockpiles for it, and made the temporary still/kitchen. Miners work away at the outjut channeling.
http://i.imgur.com/8s4IR.png - overview of entry hall
Malachite 251
Started to create additional rooms off to the side of the temporary woodworking station. Still haven't finished channeling the outside area yet. I decided to build a constructed outjut for now, as the mason wasn't really doing very much.
http://i.imgur.com/1GOM2.png
Galena 251
Some migrants arrive! Eight of them actually. Among them I found a cool dude that's great to be a broker, and is pretty good brewer too. I'll make him be the dedicated "food/drink guy". I tried to even out the labors for each person accordingly, but don't have much of a workforce right now to properly differentiate them all. I also got the hunters (yes there is more than one now) hunting again, as I started to make some wood bolts. Masons are still smoothing the walls. Puppies were born too!
I also named some of the dwarves after the participants in this month!

Limestone 251
Starting autumn off with a bang. I fucked up the designations for the channeling above the entry way. Collapsed, and hurt 2 people. At least the channeling was finally finished. Created a small bridge at the entrance to prevent intruders from, entering. Added a lever in the temporary dormitory, and created a note(N) detailing what the lever does. Gave 'deviodere' (the original hunter) a hunting dog. A baby lamb was born as well. Created a small animal pen and penned the poultry nearby the entrance, and gave them some nestboxes. I plan to forbid one set of eggs to duplicate how many we have. Apartment buildings were designated way down below the central staircase.
http://i.imgur.com/UAZuL.png - The fucked up channeling.

Sandstone 251
Trade depot was finally finished over by the entrance. Cage traps were also filling up. I started building a well down by the apartments, which has a direct connection to the river (with a fortification in between). Some more migrants (seven) arrived as well. As usual, I just kind of sorted them into what we didn't already have.
http://i.imgur.com/scaAq.png - well
http://i.imgur.com/KxZ2b.png - Trade depot
Timber 251
The well is filled up now, and the miners started working on some more rooms on the "main floor". A Olon Sibrekam goes into a secretive mood on the 12th of timber, and claims a carpenters workshop. He needs leather, and unfortunately I don't have any at the moment. So I just butchered a cow. 14th of timber, the liason/dwarven caravan came. I stopped butchering the cow. I quickly gathered up everything I could (not much) and brought it to the trade depot to barter for some leather. While waiting for the merchants to unpack their goods, I made a hospital in one of the newly dug out rooms made by the miners. I couldn't grab very much, but I ended up with some miscellaneous bars, some wine, 10 leather, and some glass. Olon started his construction, now that i've gotten him some leather. The liason then asked me what I wanted, and I told him "wood". Olon disappointed me, and made a shitty floodgate. I also decided to remove stukos from being the expedition leader, and replace him with "Bembel the engraver". Unfortunately i'm a dumbass, and that caused the liason to leave "unhappy". Great job.

http://i.imgur.com/fg2kN.png - Artifact floodgate
Moonstone 251
I made the militia commander be the part-time bookkeeper until someone better suited comes along. I also started to build a magma resevoir using the volcano. I'm going to drop it from the surface-height all the way down to just below the main floor, then lead it under the bottom-left room, which will be the smelter room. I also planned to make 2 floodgates connected to the main "lava chamber", with a screw pump pumping inwards from the left side. The left side (which looks like an identical resevior) will typically remain closed, but will be used for temporarily draining the magma pool. Iden Ginetstakud got attached to his shitty little crossbow as well. It's iron though, so I don't blame him too much. So I nicknamed him "Iron Fury", so I could easily tell him apart from the rest.
http://i.imgur.com/y43Ks.png - Magma resevoir (will need to have portions rebuilt, to be magma safe)
http://i.imgur.com/qYRc2.png - Stupid hunters and their crossbows
Opal 251
Wereshrew came. Fuck. It appeared directly next to the entrance as well. I quickly set up a burrow that spanned the main floor, added a few people to the military that had decent skills, then told them to go die to it. As soon as I unpaused however, it decided to gnaw on a chicken. Then it started charging toward the animals, but halfway through the charge it transformed back into a human. He then proceeded to flee from the map. I didn't do much else this round except finish up some of the things i started last month. I started designating out a floor right below the main floor though, possibly to be used as a stockpile room. Hopefully nobody mines into the future magma container.
http://i.imgur.com/TjOZ8.png - wereshrew notice
Obsidian 251
I designated out a graveyard/tomb area around the apartment lobby, and went around labelling all of the important points in the "Notes" menu (N). I also pathed out some of the main floor with the "traffic area designator". I created a kennel out by the butchery shop, and trained some war/hunting dogs. On the 18th of obsidian, we got 2 kobold thieves. Nothing really happened though. The chickens scattered like crazy as soon as the kobold was found, and then he ran away to the map border. I guess he was afraid of chickens. I never really properly set up a pasture for the animals as it would take forever to properly do it, so the ewe and ram died of starvation; oh well. Oh, and the yak cow. The bookkeeper has also attained "high precision" since I put her into position.

Spring has finally arrived, so my time here is done.
I wasn't sure if I was going to stay up all night or not.
I guess now I know.
[editline]12th March 2012[/editline]
13th Granite
I arrive to the fortress, the entrance littered with dozens of dead chickens, of which seem to be regularly hauled into the place itself.
I later learn they're being made into crossbows.
One thing I note is, even with the drawbridge and cage traps, the entrace is rather vulnerable. There are no doors, no diversions, nothing. I must remedy this.
11th Slate
Work on the entryway is continuing just as planned, or was, until that good-for-nothing Stukos organized a party. For what reason? Why, none at all.

...
It took some time, but they finally finished their party and got back to work.
26th Slate
Time sure flies when you're fortifying a poorly defended fortress.
I decided to stop by the bookkeeper, only to find out he is also our militia leader. This won't do.
I've demoted him and given the broker, Urvad, the position.
After all this, what do I find? Our still is un-touched and our stocks are all terribly low! It's obvious what I have to do now. I'll designate a new farm, larger and with its own private stockpile.

2nd Felsite
Migrants! Farmers and planters! It's as if the gods themselves knew what we were in dire need of.

4th Felsite
One of the new migrants has started hiding away from everyone. I'm not sure what he's up to, but I think we ought to keep an eye on him.

5th Felsite
Abeil, as I've learned their name now, has gone and claimed a forge. This is a rather... interesting turn of events.

11th Felsite
While I've been busy moving the farm to a, admittedly more remote, location, it seems Abeil has gone and made an earing of exceptional quality, or so he says.

I'm going to save and quit here, losing focus with how late it is.
[editline]12th March 2012[/editline]
Yeah, I'm tired.
The dwarves of Dyewhipped have built a three-tile wide tunnel from the volcano to the entrance of the fort.
Luckily, it's a couple z-levels above the actual entrance.
Also, it's still contained behind a wall of untouched stone.
[editline]12th March 2012[/editline]
A few snatchers have come to try and take the babies and children as well.
The chickens and such at the entrance promptly ripped them apart.
Add me, lets make sure this one least longer than the last one..
I'd like to sign up aswell.
I want a turn. :D
Add me upp
