• Let's Play Elona

Hello there. I wasn't sure if LPs could be done here, but seeing Asrue2's thread and the good feedback it got I decided it would be okay for me to make this. Anyway, Elona is a strange Japanese roguelike. It's very hard to describe. A few of the things that makes it different are the fact there's no permadeath, it has graphics, and a ton of weird shit. For this run I'm going to be playing as a Yerles because of their skill point bonus and the fact they have the Firearms proficiency, one of the rarest proficiencies in the game. The extra races you see there are 'debug' races which allow me to be anything from a little girl to a sentient motorcycle. I'll be playing as a Tourist because of the fact they have no skill weaknesses and because their Traveling skill is one of the most useful in the entire game. Beginning stats don't really matter seeing as you can increase them later on. I will be using the feats Exorcist (stops items from being cursed while you sleep), Lucky (increases luck, of course), and Agile (increases speed). Appearance. Not much to say. And lastly, our character's name. Eh. Anyway, the game starts with a short cutscene about you running away from your own land, then the ship crashes and you wake up in a cave with two high-level NPCs who give you shit before leaving. After they leave they give you a few furniture items. Next update we will be cleaning up this dump.
Oh god, this game is so much fun, but so damn tedious at the same time. Please continue! I wish to see you die.
PART 2: In which our hero runs away like a little girl. After picking up most of the junk items from my house I walk outside and enter a random map space to dispose of them. There are too many monsters in the first, so I leave. The next map space I stop on seems promising until I'm about to leave. The thing circled in red is a kobold. He's one of the strongest monsters in the entire goddamn game. He can only make melee attacks but they can kill most low-level characters in one or two hits. The best course of action is to run away like a little girl. Again. After nearly getting slaughtered, I finally make it to the town where my pet is waiting. :pedo: The little girl is actually the strongest of all the pets to choose at the beginning because she has equipment slots. Now, the best place to go to first is the tavern so you can see why you never want to start as a Pianist. You see, the higher an NPC's level is, the better you have to play to impress them. Loyter is one of the more powerful NPCs in the game. When you target an NPC you get a little message telling you their approximate level. His message is "If he is a giant, you are less than a dropping of an ant." Yeah. Now to another NPC you never want to mess with. <Whom dwell in the vanity>'s name is a literal translation which is why it's so weird. He has a sword called Ragnarok. Not only is it very strong, it also has the attribute "It brings an end". What that means is it has a chance to set nearly the entire map on fire and summon tons of giants and dragons. Basically, if that happens, you're fucked. We're too poor to buy anything and too weak to do quests, so to fix that we're going to go to one of the best dungeons in the game, the Puppy Cave. [editline]10:20PM[/editline] Part 3: In which our hero meets an untimely end. Stupid hermit crabs. Hermit crabs have amazingly high DV (Dodge value) and PV (Protection value) making them almost impossible to kill. They also do a nice amount of damage and have slightly below average speed. Colbert died here along with me. I got a ring that would be useless if it weren't for the fact it's glass. Items made of glass are fireproof, weigh less than normal and always increase speed by 4. After that I decided to go to a few randomly generated dungeons, the first being Safe Tower with a danger level of 2. I was chased out by a pink-haired gangster. Next, to the Exciting fort with a danger level of 6. Well, it can't be that bad... Nevermind. Every one of those is a kamikaze yeek. Their attack is exploding. When they die they explode. If I kill one, they all go off. The only winning move is not to play. Back in the Puppy Cave, I find and equip a pair of glass boots. Bad move. They were cursed. I don't know the effect because they're not identified, but it's probably "sucks blood" or something that will kill me. Only time will tell. I can't take them off, either. Instead of waiting to learn I run to the identifier who asks me for nearly all my money to tell me the way I'll die. I accept. Turns out their curse is being stuck on my feet forever. I'm not in any real danger. Anyway, onwards to the Puppy Cave! Again! Today's loot is another glass item. This time it's a sword, though. Now I won't die as easily! :buddy: Join us next time when we look for things to do in Vernis. [editline]10:52PM[/editline] Part 4: In which our hero becomes rich. Turns out the cursed boots make me teleport and lose money randomly. I also got a cursed amulet. Fun! Vernis was boring so I went to sleep. Did I do that? Oh hey, a treasure map. Wow, that's a helpful map. Well, maybe I'll get lucky and find it. While traveling that way I have to go to sleep in another town. Okay. Oh no, now I'm mutated. Hopefully I'll find a potion of cure mutation sometime. (the image is being stupid and not showing up but I GOT MUTATED AGAIN IN THE SAME NIGHT) WOW While I was going to the snowy place some guy took my food and money but the image was also stupid and didn't load. :aaaaa: I'm rich! Join us next time when we probably die trying to get back home and lose all of our money.
Put the wings on and become an angel and PROSTITUTE YOURSELF TO THE SILVER WOLVES OF THE GRAVEYARD :black101: Also try some useful skills, like cooking.
Simply by watching your tale of playing this has made me go and download it. Holy crap this game is really confusing, i died like 5 times in the tutorial and when i got outside i was attacked by bandits :(
Simply by watching your tale of playing this has made me go and download it.
Great, nice to know I got someone to play this cool game. WHAT? How could that even happen? After dying and losing about 800 gold I go back to Vernis and buy a blessed scroll of uncurse for nearly all my money. First level up. Great, now I might not die as easily! I read the scroll and... YES! I'M FREE! HAHAHA! So now I need some money and platinum pieces to learn cooking and get good equipment. I accept a hunting quest but there's a silver cat who would usually be marked as an ally if he wasn't in a hunting quest who killed me. I then decide to go to Palmia. However, hard rain slows me down and everyone's best friend shows up... Ether wind! It gives you Ether Disease which horribly mutates you unless you can get to an inn. Very fun. Also monsters are much stronger in it. After dying I decided to go run outside until I got Ether Disease. Who knows, maybe I'll get that neat PV mutation. Instead I got a -Charisma mutation, which doesn't matter seeing as it's already at 0. Finally, I make it to Palmia where I decide to play Blackjack, because one of the rewards is a potion of cure corruption which kills ether disease (and sells well). I get 10 casino chips to start with, which is enough for 10 low-payoff games or 2 good-payoff games. I get two small shields. Yay. Then I stepped into a moon gate (teleports to user-made maps) and the game crashed.
Part 4: In which our hero discovers the wonders of tuna. So if I go to the port town which is about a two day walk from Vernis, I can get tuna which sells for a decent profit here. So I'll be running tuna from the port, Kapul, to Vernis for the rest of this update and only listing interesting things. This time it's a good mutation because it's green. Going to worship Jure for the healing and cooking bonuses. Hey, I'm rich. Because trading makes you level up I got a new feat. I chose to get Short Distance Runner (not shown) because it decreases the rate at which I get tired. Next update, probably more trading. Lots of trading. can people give feedback so i don't feel like i'm not doing anything
Trade until you have a million gold, buy the best equipment you can find, and wipe on the first level of the puppy cave because you're a sad-sack with no combat abilities.
Recently I haven't been doing too well. I keep being attacked by rogue bosses who take all my cargo, and since my charisma is as low as possible I can't trade well anyway. Since I'm level 6 I now have to pay bills. However, it turns out it's Christmas. Too bad all the cool stuff is too expensive. I want a bike. This guy sold me a rod of... domination.... for a few weird medals. Then I found this. I'm going to go around drinking from wells, maybe I'll lose the bad mutations.
(The Quote) Since I'm level 6 I now have to pay bills.(/The Quote) The horror of it all. The bills... THE BILLS! :ohdear:
This is getting kind of hard to do since I don't know if people are reading, so I'm going to take suggestions. What should I aim for getting after trading, what skill should I buy with my first 15 platinum, and should I resurrect my little girl the first moment I get or fly solo? The deeds I can buy after trading are: -A smaller house (Which is okay because if I put enough nice furniture in it I'll get more money as a salary -A shop (Expensive as fuck, takes an NPC to man, but can rake in some good cash, I wouldn't recommend) -Museum (Pretty simple, put cards and figurines in it and get money every month) -Farm (Lets me grow shit) -Ranch (Lets me breed shit, good for my god's bonus to cooking and anatomy which give me more corpses and better food) Skills are: -Cooking (cooking, obviously) -Performer (lets me play music, I'll sound like portsmouth symphonia at the beginning but if I can level up enough I can make good money off of Party Time quests) -Carpentry, Sewing or one of the other crafting skills (Let me make wands, scrolls and clothes out of mostly useless materials, scrolls are the best because free identification)
I could have sworn I saw a GAYLORD MCFAG's death message while I was playing Elona. I forgot why it was familiar until I went back here.
Cooking, shop, and resurrect the girl Let's run this shit into the ground
I would go with the ranch, since you have the bonuses to cooking and anatomy they would go best together, that and you would be able to supply your own food. Also while playing you probably saw a few of my death messages, I die ALOT to kobolds in the first dungeon.
Well, a problem arose recently. Gaylord got way too many mutations and none of the shops had cure mutation potions. It got to the point where he had 1 Strength, meaning most enemies would kill him in one hit. He could no longer trade because he couldn't outrun the thieves who would steal his cargo. I managed to find medals to buy a potion of cure corruption, but it wasn't enough. A few mutations stayed on him. So I decided there was nothing else I could do. Don't worry, this isn't the end of the LP. I'll make another character, though this time not a tourist.
Damnit Jim.
Damnit Jim.
I'll still use your suggestion for the next character, I just don't think this one will work out. I blame being a tourist.
Eh, you win some you lose some. I propose a musician or whatever it was. Since you start with armor and a sword.
Eh, you win some you lose some. I propose a musician or whatever it was. Since you start with armor and a sword.
Alright. This time I'm going for a Juere Pianist with the feats Exorcist (basically a must if you don't want a bunch of cursed items), Sexy (+4 charisma, very useful), and Short Distance Runner (More stamina, which performing uses). I start out with a piano too heavy for me to lift, so I have to go all the way to a graveyard near the snowy town where I can find a horn. This will be happening until I level up Performer enough so I won't be killed by shopkeepers, which will be a while unless I can find a group of level 1 friendly NPCs to play for. Fantastic.
The cyberdome becomes a pretty good place to play at once you have 15+ performer.
You got me to play this game. Thanks OP. Good stuff.
The cyberdome becomes a pretty good place to play at once you have 15+ performer.
Doing this I made a nice bit of gold and got my performer skill up. Thanks.
You got me to play this game. Thanks OP. Good stuff.
Glad to hear that. So I do a bunch of practicing at Cyber Dome, nothing very eventful happens except a shopkeeper wandering over and throwing something at me every once in a while. Then Ether Wind blows and I get an idea while in the shelter. Yes. It's a good way to get your charisma up and you can make money off of it. You lose karma, however. I decide after a while that it's time for me to try a Party Time quest. At first it seems fine, but it turned out I wasn't quick enough and I failed to get enough points (which you get from playing well) to complete the quest. Then I go to the mansion of little sisters where- I perform and get about 600 gold per performance. This is great. Sometimes you get items thrown at you. They're usually useful, but it depends on the level of the people listening. I can't really say anything about this.
A summary of that last post should be the slogan of this thread. "Perform for two dozen little girls, get shit thrown at you."
Theres shitloads more than just a dozen :byodood:
Theres shitloads more than just a dozen :byodood:
I counted 52 on that one screen. Also playing there doesn't do too well because one of them, the original spawner of the lolis (She had an ability that spammed sisters, I just summoned a monster and she used it), has really high levels and likes killing me. She also looks exactly the same. Check out this cloak, not sure where I got it. EXTREME ARENA BATTLES .... I have nothing to say. Since I hit level 5 I get a new feat. I upgraded Sexy.
Thats a damn nice cloak, I wish i had one.
You have well knit arms. :v:
Reminds me. Im having fun playing as a Pianist right now. Sadly haven't gotten to the Younger Sisters area yet but meh :v: Also do note it's a fairy so im having a extra hard time.
im gonna download this game is there anything i should know
I was playing this game when I found this I could of sworn I saw your character get killed :v:
