Overcast is a whitelisted roleplay server that takes place after the Combine’s triumph over The Uprising in Eastern Europe. The Combine has taken a far more authoritarian approach to city management, focusing on surveillance, propaganda, and other effective techniques to prevent a second uprising; the citizens are also forced to perform labour under the empire. A new dawn arises for humanity, one which perhaps human peace will survive.
About Us
As previously mentioned, Overcast is currently using a server whitelist-- meaning each player must complete a short application before joining. The goal of the application is to bring back an older feel to roleplay, one that ensures a positive experience and a better community. Our goal as a server isn't to have the best scripts or the highest population, but rather to be a tight-knit community for those looking for quality roleplay. While such a server may not appeal to everyone, it’s meant to hopefully attract the attention of similar-minded players.
Overcast heavily focuses on providing a realistic experience under Combine oppression. Our definition of ‘resistance’ focuses on the exchanging of knowledge and resources, ridding ourselves of the constant thirsts for bloodshed. On the other side, Civil Protection enforces its rule with more than stun batons-- careful tactics, cameras, and a wide arsenal of other tools to enforce their dominance. By giving Civil Protection a tighter grip on City 45, we intend to show a more dystopian and oppressive take on the events of Half-Life 2, and the events that would realistically follow it.

As previously mentioned, Overcast enforces good roleplay through a whitelist-based application. To access the application, visit our forums at overcast-hl2rp.com or simply click here. No forum registration is required to submit an application. Once done, connect to the server at 74.91.115.21.
What makes it different from all of the other Half-Life 2: RP communities and servers?
Anyway I hope it works out for you. As long as you have fun that's all the matters.
meaning each player must complete a short application before joining
lol
true fantastic work monkah :-) i cant wait for the lolwebuls to be the only ones on the server :-)
this is looking closer to nazirp than hl2rp to be honest
Good luck!
Hope it works out well.
Best wishes!

I don't really see what's so funny, honestly. Whitelist completely removes any rule-breakers from joining the server. It shortens the player base to 5-6 players on at peaked times, but the roleplay is definitely increased and much more centered. Freedom4Gamers did this and the roleplay on that server was improved to any other server I've played on in my roleplay career.
All personal preference.

It's not to hard to fake your way onto a white list and break up roleplay.
It's not to hard to fake your way onto a white list and break up roleplay.
Then you'd be removed from the whitelist. I doubt he'd let in idiots. You need to be an experienced roleplayer to get into this server, fair and square.

that already puts me off, the server is gonna become an elitist circlejerk
that already puts me off, the server is gonna become an elitist circlejerk
Text and forum roleplays in almost it's entirety require applications or to be friends of existing roleplayers to get in.
I don't see any elitist circlejerk there, and there are no idiots in the better of the thousands of forum/text roleplays.
Sure, those forums have less elitist jerks in them, but roleplayers tend to enjoy new roleplayers, as it usually adds more depth to the roleplay, perhaps it is better to have it public due to more roleplayers, I found half life 2 roleplayers to be just as nice, even in whitelisted servers.
But having it whitelisted also means that you don't have to deal with minges nearly as often, so you can get yourself immersed into the roleplay more easily and perhaps have the entire server have a more enjoyable experience even though there are less people, inexperienced people will certainly be let in most of the time as long as you at least know how to roleplay.
All in all, neither whitelisted nor public are better, they both have their own pros and cons, whitelisted servers will certainly not become elitist circlejerks just because they will not accept people who haven't roleplayed before, and definitely not because you dislike the whitelist model despite it being used for years and is still being used to this very day in text roleplays and some Half life 2 roleplays.

like what
Don't see why everyone's bashing it. It's whitelist because obviously some people think it's a good idea. You don't have to play on the server. Nobody's forcing you to apply. If you dislike the whitelist model, then leave. There are people out there who would prefer the whitelist model as you would the public one, so stop prematurely judging it because it has a different preference from your own. It's childish, really. If you're not one of the people who roleplays like this, then join another server.
Believe it or not, it is possible! I know, it's crazy, but people do have their preferences. So stop saying it's gonna be an elitist circle jerk when you've never actually tried it out.

It probably WILL be an elitist circlejerk though, you're complaining about people being judgemental then judging them for having doubts.
In all honesty though, it may work out but only ever for a small group of people. I don't know any kinds of popular roleplaying forum threads or games that use whitelists, except maybe something on the Something Awful forums.
Most of the roleplaying stuff in the ms paint section and other non-gmod games seems to work fine without having whitelists, you just need to a) make users care enough about the story/game in order to be properly involved and care about what they're doing, and b) make them have to put enough effort into it to be worth their time.
A whitelist or survey or whatever isn't really a deterrent to less skilled or less well-versed players because they can just use the standard canned responses to any question you may conceive. It may actually turn away the more serious roleplayers who just want to jump in and play and not go through however many pages of surveys and questionaries you think justifies a reputable player and your own egos.
Children or less mature players can easily work their way through pages of applications, but more mature players might not have the time or the will to go through all that crap just to have a chance to TRY OUT what may otherwise be yet another crappy, generic hl2rp server, regardless of it's elitist application policies that try to make it seem NEW and DIFFERENT.
Instead of blaming bad players for all of the bad roleplay that takes place, what are you actually doing to improve the existing roleplay experience and the various problems and faults that exist within the framework of every roleplay server?

While I'm not affiliated with the sever other than playing on it, I know that it's different. I can tell you that I've had my share of good and bad servers. (Go check out my reviews on Cloud Sixteen.) NOTE: they're probably in the garbaged section.
Anyway, I know that this server has improved roleplay as it is centered and focused. On-top of that, the staff and players in the server are (in my opinion) some of the top of the line well-known role players in the Clockwork community.

it's mostly because monkah talks a lot of shit about nearly every single server out there because he can't have admin. (he also can't get a populated server)
Forums are more accesible than garrysmod for RP. Two people dont need to be on to rp on forums, they need to be on their PCs for gmod. Its less likely for the server to have players, I guess time will tell.
A whitelist on a server is silly imo. :v: Good luck!
Still don't see how it's silly.

Something is suspicious considering it's the first Games in Progress thread you don't troll to death.
Were you offered... The Prize?

Well seeing as I've never 'trolled' (we still use this term?) any GiP threads, I've no idea what you're talking about.

you flame servers because of bad experiences, I saw it on CC and Spire threads.
I also checked the TS log after you claimed people 'bullied' you and there was NEVER any connection from someone named Dub, nobody even recognizes you or knows about you when I asked on the day it happened.

it was fayz/sants but we're good now
Can you guys please take this to PMs? A derailed thread is the last thing we need.
I might have a go at this sometime. I always join RP servers with the intent to RP and have some fun but before I know it I'm running for my life or just being in the middle of nowhere whilst everyone's just in some other part of the map killing each other.
I would love to see Monkah's godlike rp skills lol
Applied :#. Just waiting for response now. Speaking of which, how do we get informed if we were accepted or not?
