There was a thread for this game back in 2012 but the game has changed a lot since then and the thread does not cover most of the information
PokeMMO is an effort to create an online Pokemon experience. It has many features, including the ability for you to trade with other players, chat with them, battle against other players, and more.
Currently, some features are not implemented such as proper battle animations and sound effects and a few bugs here and there but nothing game breaking. That said though the game is pretty fun especially with a few friends so I decided to share this game with Facepunch. There are currently two regions to play with 400 pokemon and you can start at either one. The regions are Kanto and Hoenn. Both singleplayer stories are complete and you can play them with your friends.
To play you are going to need a total of 3 roms.
Pokemon FireRed
Pokemon Emerald
Pokemon HeartGold ((Only needed if you want to see follower Pokemon))

([b]These are screenshots I took myself with a few mods installed for the 3D battle sprites and custom tilesets, if you'd like to use these just let me know and I can provide them for you. Otherwise the game will use the base FireRed Sprites and Tiles[/b])
When you log in for the first time, you will be prompted to create a character. Choose your character's name, your rival's name, your character's gender, your hairstyle and clothes. After that you are on your own to play the game.
[u]Controls:[/u]
The default controls are:
Arrow Key Up: Up
Arrow Key Left: Left
Arrow Key Down: Down
Arrow Key Right: Right
Z: A
X: B
You can rebind these keys by using the Settings menu, accessible via the Game Menu button in the bottom right of your screen. You can even play with a controller.
You can interact with Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) by using Z and you can run by holding down X after obtaining the running shoes.
I highly recommend making a separate chat tab in game when you start, that way your chatbox does not get flooded

After placing these in the folders, enable them through the in-game mod manager before logging in, your client will automatically restart
Also, a mod I use involves a patched rom to get the graphics up to DS Levels, it changes the trainer sprites and overworld tiles, you could apply the patch yourself but it doesn't seem to work for a lot of FireRed Roms, I won't leave a link for it here because I'm not sure if it is allowed but you can message me through steam for it, the graphics boost it gives is a great touch

If you want a follower Pokemon drag your desired pokemon off of the Party Bar to the right of your screen and it will follow behind you (if you have the HeartGold Rom)
If you want a Hat/Bookbag hit up the first Pokemart hats and bookbags are 300 each so it's pretty cheap.
Holy shit I remember playing a similar thing back way in 2007-2008. I think it was called PokemonMMO back then too, I wonder if this is the same game just massively updated over the years.
I'll definitely join once I get the time to set it up. Seems fun.
Played this with a friend a while back, got through Kanto and half of Hoenn, was pretty fun.

With the security flaws and huge performance issues, it's deserving of the hate it gets.
And from a programming perspective there's plenty of alternatives. Hell, even C# is multiplatform now with Mono.

There are patches you can make to your FireRed Rom using a tool called LunarIPS. Using the patches you can get different tilesets and sprites as well as music. You could get GBC Blue/Red/Yellow sprites and such. These patches do work with most roms, if it doesn't work for you though the rom I'm using is by some guy named squirrels so try that one.

When encountering shinies, is there any notification other than the visual appearance? Like does it say "Shiny ___"?

seems to depend on the location
you can use the "sweet scent" move in the overworld to attract a horde, pretty great for EV training

Ah, that's a pretty neat feature. Does creating an account take a few days for the email to arrive? --durrr, thought I needed an activation email first :)
Would be kick ass if you can have guilds and any guild with 50+ active/concurrent players can setup a gym.

There's a guide tavern secton on the Pokemmo forums, covers most of that information.
Breeding is VERY different in this game than the original games, you don't get the parent pokemon you put in back. I will add this following information to the OP.

I'm almost on the seventh gym in Hoenn, fite me.
Also holy fuck I just read that breeding guide and it's somehow more complicated than in the actual games(and more expensive too).
Got my friend into this because he played pokemon go once.
Turns out he was apart of a tournament and bred fucktons of pokemon back in the day.

If I go to Hoenn I can't access my Kanto Pokemon and vice versa until you beat both stories. At least I think that's how it works.
And yeah, a 6IV or even a 5IV Pokemon goes for 1,200,000 on the Pokemmo Global Trade Link

You leave your pokemon in the PC and can get them back once you get to the first pokecenter, but you need the appropriate gym badges to be able to use those pokemon properly in a different region.
