The Kingdom of God - A 1095 Nation RP
The year is 1095, and tensions are brewing. Byzantine and the Sultanate of Rum clash over the bountiful lands of Anatolia as well as over opposing faiths. Many believe the Papacy will finally respond to the requests from the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios I Komnenos, to defend Christendom, though this is still speculation and rumors. The Iberian Peninsula too faces tension between Islam and Christianity, with the Muslim Almoravid dynasty seeking to expand their holdings whilst the Christian kingdoms look to defend what little they have of their homeland. The Holy Roman Empire reigns supreme as the seat of power of Europe and as a figure of authority throughout the entire continent, challenging the ancient power and authority of the Byzantines. In the east, the Khanates and Slavic states rule and seek expand their borders and influence. Most notably, the Grand Duchy of Kiev and the Cuman Khanate. In these dark times, blood will be shed in the name of God. How warfare works in this RP would be somewhat the likes of Crusader Kings II. Upon raising levies in the event of war, it would take a couple months for all your forces to centralize into an army/armies [however many, is up to you]. These armies are physical entities that you would have to command in your turn to go a certain path [this would go under the Military part of the turn, describe the paths of your army [though visual aid would be helpful as well] and your army will execute those commands. Battles Battles between armies only occur when two opposing armies are relatively close to each other when moving. Battles are determined by a variety of factors, that will be explained in another post, on and off the battlefield. Army Maintenance Your troops need a steady stream of supplies as well as payment, so keep your coffers full. Morale is also beneficial to your troops. Things the can affect morale are RNG based, with things such as disease racking the siege camps, desertion, betrayal, etc. Take good care of your men and they will fight for you to the end. Sieges Sieges are uneventful for the attacking side for the most part until the actual attack commences. A lot of time would be spent preparing fortifications, siege weaponry, and plans of attack. Or you can choose to starve your opponents out without attacking. This takes longer, but your army will suffer less casualties mostly. Naval Warfare For the sake of not over complicating things, naval warfare will be mostly decided by fleet sizes/ship quality. A ship from Byzantium would be much stronger and more powerful than a ship from, say, Ireland. Pillaging You can also pillage enemy villages/towns/cities. On the march to a major objective, the men can get restless, so a bit of pillaging will bring their morale up, as well as give you a bit of wealth. However, this will be a stain on your prestige. On the Various Factors of Armies/Battle
Leadership Quality A good general will have the martial training and experience to employ effective strategies in a pitched battle every time as well as maintain discipline within the ranks to employ effective movements, barring extreme circumstances such as acts of god. Weighed heavily in a battle roll. Army Size Quite straightforward. Having a larger army gives a bonus to battle rolls. Equipment Quality The equipment your soldiers and army wear and bear also make up a key factor in the quality of your overall army. This adds a bonus to battle rolls, however is not as prolific as some of the others. Experience Obvious. An army that has fought and won before will be much better off then an army of fresh recruits. Gives a buff to battle rolls. Army Fatigue Medieval armies have to march a lot to meet pace and reach an objective. In medieval warfare, battles were often decided by who's force had eaten breakfast in the hours following up to the battle, or simply gotten a night's rest. Weather Weather is often the bane of besiegers and the besieged, often delaying or even outright stopping a siege in its tracks. Sieges obtain a massive penalty when going through winter. Morale Your troops need to be in good spirits in order to perform well. Things like keeping a good stream of supplies, winning battles/sieges, rallying troops keeps morale up. Gives a bonus/detriment to battle rolls depending on the status of morale. Miscellaneous Small events throughout a march or a battle can impact the grand scheme of things, usually decided by small RNG rolls. In the head of battle, a commander or leader can die, disease can strike the camps, bandits can pick off lone soldiers patrolling or taking a piss, etc. These would impact morale more so than army sizes.
Thanks Milkdairy for the suggestions!

Held with the intention of deposing the Archbishop of Canterbury over his support of the antipapacy of Clement III, the Lords Spiritual side with William II while the Lords Temporal side with the Archbishop, leading to a standstill. The quarrel was reconciled after the Archbishop, Anselm, recognized Urban, and the pope refused to depose Anselm afterwards. Advance of the Turks The Sultanate of Rum continues their relentless march throughout Anatolia, pushing back against the forces of Byzantium, the defenders of Christendom against the Muslim hordes. The Emperor sought aid in the previous year by appealing to the Pope of the Holy See, and an answer arrives later in the year... God Wills It! On the 27th of November, 1095, Pope Urban II held the Council of Clermont in his homeland of France. He recounted the horrible tragedies and atrocities committed by the ruthless Turks against the good Christians of Anatolia, looking to inspire clergy and noblemen alike to defend the faith. He called upon all Christians, no matter their country or loyalty, to take up arms march to Constantinople to aid the Byzantines in the fight against the Muslim menace. The crowd reportedly cheered "Deus Vult!" as the sermon ended, as people ready themselves for their Holy Quest. The Turk menace will be defeated, for god wills it. The People's Crusade Unexpectedly, the common folk have taken up arms to defend the Christian faith. Peter the Hermit, a lowly priest of the faith, preached the crusade after the Pope's call to arms throughout Flanders and northern France, inspiring many. A very large force of nearly 40,000 strong is assembled and march, however cause trouble by massacring Jews in the Rhineland, leading to local clergy within the areas to denounce this rabble of an army. However, undeterred, they continued their march towards Constantinople and reach it by the years end, to many people's amazement. How will this army of untrained peasants and troops fare? No one knows. The Crusaders March Sicily and Denmark hear the call to arms and raise arms for the fight against the Turks. A number of prominent lords also establish armies and prepare their march for Constantinople, including Godfrey of Bouillon, Raymond IV of Toulouse and many others. This Grand Army of God seems to be materializing fast enough to respond to the Turk threat, as they all will conglomerate together sometime next year, before heading forward to fight the Turks. Sicily has been well to him and in return he has been well to Sicily under his reign. He looked however to continue to grow and increase the prosperity of what he ruled, to ensure that his reign will be remembered, for soon he believed his time would come to greet the Lord in paradise, and his son would inherit and rule in his seat where he once ruled. With the sudden death of Roger Borsa, Roger I inherited his land, adding more under his domain. He immediately looked outward toward the seas, to where the merchants came and went. The lifeblood of Sicily was trade for the most part, and it needed to be protected and grown. Roger I would task the expansion of ports in Palermo, Syracuse, and Trapani, along with expanding the walls and defenses of said cities. Though the cost was high and the treasury took a reasonably large hit to its wealth, perhaps it will be worth it, as now many citizens feel better about their own livelihoods as they see construction working on their cities. These will be expected to be finished in the next year or two, depending on weather and other circumstances. He also saw it vital that craftsmen work to create artisan goods, as they were important to practically everyone within the realm. In a public message to be posted in cities, towns, and villages throughout Sicily, Roger I encouraged artisan craftsmen to organize into guilds. Time will tell how effective this will be, however a small guild for tailors and a guild for wood carvers have propped up. For Sicily to grow, one must be able to travel well on her soil. Roger I commissions a series of way-stations for horsemen messengers to obtain food and water, for themselves and their horses, and even a good night's rest. This continues to drain the coffer, and only a few of these stations are built, however they are immediately put to good use by messengers of the realm. Roger I also asks lords under his rule to assemble small groups of men to guard and patrol these roads, to ensure the safety and efficiency of this system. Around four lords take up this command, while the rest go about their business, however it is usually enough to mostly keep the peace on these roads in the areas these lords reside. Roger I also takes note of the importance of the sea, and how its control is paramount. He immediately sets his Marshal to build a fleet, however it will take some time before a decent number of ships are built, and with the coffers continuing to lose money, it will become unsustainable. As any good Christian would, he sought to help others in need and, if possible, convert them to the faith. This was in reference to the Moors and Orthodox Christians living under his domain. In a speech to several Catholic clergy members, he asked that they show kindness to others so that they may see the light of the one true God and Savior. This went well for a while, as food was distributed to the wretched poor, and many moors were converted. Food and help was given to Orthodox Christians too, however the conversions to Catholicism were much less than with the moors. This program of charity by the clergy in Sicily however would come to an end with the arrival of the Pope's call of the First Crusade, and many moors that were left unaided were left to continue to suffer, for they were the enemy. Enemies to God and all of Christendom. Hearing the call of the Pope near the end of the year, Bohemund, Roger's nephew, took up arms to defend the faith. Roger I eagerly assists his beloved nephew and sends him men to aid him, bringing Bohemund's army to 7500 strong. Bohemund expresses his enourmous gratitude toward his uncle as he departs his home with his army, heading for Constantinople, to fight for his family and his faith. Meanwhile, a blacksmith discovers something peculiar. A metal that isn't iron but stronger. However, it only comes out in very small quantities, and its uses are quite limited due to the amount able to be created.
Most Serene Republic of Venice - Milkdairy Doge Vitale Faliero Dodon
The Doge stayed in his study throughout the day, managing tasks and writing papers. The Doge was always busy, for the merchant fleets of Venice never rest, so neither does he. So it was a surprise to him when a messenger arrived at his door. The message was a trade agreement request from Sicily. He stood up, taking the parchment to his window to read it better. The terms were agreeable, so he immediately set to work to respond to the agreement with profound approval. After sending the messenger on his way, Vitale Dodon continued to write statements to merchants and shipwrights in Venice to inform them of this new agreement. Many would be pleased from this. The Doge also looked eastward, towards the Hungarians. There lay a good opportunity for trade, he thought to himself. A delegation was sent to the Hungarian realm to discuss terms. It took a couple weeks of debating and skepticism from the other party, however an agreement was eventually struck, with trading rights expanded for the Venetians within Hungary. One of the most important agreements however would come from an agreement from the Byzantine empire. Originally, the terms made the Byzantine emperor balk, and counteroffered, realizing the need for Venetian ships for logistics. The agreement would allow Venice to build and maintain ports along the balkan shoreline, close to Serbia, in exchange for Venitian ships to transport goods and men at the will of the Emperor. The Doge also decrees that the merchants be organized into guilds, in which they would be responsible to the leadership of the Republic for their actions. While many question this decision, as trade was fine before, the order goes through and several merchant guilds are established. Salt was one of the lifebloods of Venezia, and the Doge recognized this. Establishing the ordo salis and magistrato al sal, the salt trade quickly becomes ever more important amongst the republic, as merchants are required to bring back a load of salt when returning to Venice, and a powerful autonomous organ was created to manage the salt trade. It would quickly become one of the most powerful parts of the Republic, if not the most powerful. Also recognizing the importance of stockpiling, for emergencies can happen any time, a salt warehouse is commissioned to be built, able to store a tremendous amount of the white, salty crystals. Quickly completed, it immediately begins to store large quantities of salt. Taking notes from Moorish producers, a clear glass is created, able to clearly reflect a persons' own visage. The method of making is quickly spread amongst the republic and becomes a new trend: glass mirrors. The aristocracy are reported to have been inspecting themselves for hours on end in the mirrors, admiring their beauty and wealth. Tragically however, the Doge dies in December of 1095, and is subsequently succeeded by Vital I Michele, who becomes the new Doge of Venice. May his rule be ever prosperous for Venice.
Kingdom of France - Emperor Scorpious II King Philip I
Philip sat on his throne, listening to the local peasants drone on about their problems, or his magistrates reading letters. It was quite boring, until a messenger arrived from Sicily, bearing an official letter from Roger I. It was a proposal of marriage between his son, Crown Prince Louis of France, and the Sicilian Princess Felicia. He pondered, but ultimately decided to accept the proposal, as Sicily could become a useful ally within the near future. He wrote his response and sent the messenger on his way. The marriage proposal being accepted. He also wrote to inform his son that a suitable wife had been found for him. Philip and the Pope haven't been on the best of terms, to say the least. Philip I had been excommunicated, but seeks to have that order rescinded. He writes to the Pope the promise of the building of a grand cathedral for the Bishop of Riems, in exchange for the rescinding of the excommunication. An answer would be received only at November, at the Council of Clermont, where the Pope repeats the same excommunication previously made by Hugh of Die. It seems that Philip's words have fallen on deaf ears. Recognizing the importance of commerce within the realm, Philip grants multiple royal charters for market towns across France. This immediately is followed up with markets propping up in previously empty town squares, with people selling their wares and goods, and allowing for money to flow. Marseille is an important point of defense for France, and acknowledging this, commissions the building of extra fortifications in the city to protect it from Saracen, Greek, and pirate raids. The citizens of the city are very grateful for the King's interest in helping the city, however it does hit the coffers a bit. The most important thing to happen within the realm, however, was the King's sudden call for a council meeting between him and the nobility of the realm. Nearly 500 of the top members of the nobility arrived at the King's court, all wondering what this was about. Was France under attack? Was the King alright? What's going on? These were some questions floating around, however it was quelled when the king arrived to set things to order. First, the King asked that a legal hierarchy of nobility be established in order to streamline the chain of vassalage and loyalty throughout the realm. The lords discussed this amongst themselves, however most of the nobility that held greater amounts of land agreed to this, and after a couple days of work, a new system was developed of vassalage throughout France, leaving many lords pleased. Then the King would ask lords to make one trip annually to give reports of economic activities throughout the realm, citing economic stability and growth. Many lords didn't see the trouble in this and promptly agreed to this request as well. However, it would be the final request from the king that drew controversy. The King asked that the lords recognize him as the absolute authority within the realm, second only to the Holy Church. Many lords immediately balked, some even walked out at this proposition. A few lords sprinkled throughout the forum agreed to this, however the majority opinion disregarded this request with anger. Seeking to secure his position of power on the island, he looks west, toward Ireland. There he sends an envoy to create a fruitful alliance between two Irish King, the self-declared High King of Ireland and the King of Munster. In this alliance, Donald III promised military aid in any wars against other Irish kings. The Irish rulers gracefully accepted the offer, as they would need this aid to further their own goals on Ireland. This agreement immediately leads to war as the King of Munster declares war on their neighbors in southern Leinster. However, with the support of Alba, Munster was easily able to conquer souther Leinster and bring it into its domain of rule. This does not go unnoticed by the other Irish kings however... The King of Scots also realized the importance of maintaining a well organized army in the event that England seeks to conquer their northern neighbors. Donald III sets for a plan toward his vassals in regards to unifying and standardizing a standing army. Some Alban lords question this decision and ask that this idea be further refined to allow vassals to maintain a relative degree of freedom in regards to their levies. Roads are important to allow for travel and commerce to spread across the realm, so Donald III commissions the building of roads across the realm from his treasury. Construction goes well, as several key roads between major hubs start construction and are expected to finish sometime in the next year. Donald III also looks toward the health of his subjects, and commissions hospitals be built. However, construction is slow and tedious due to incliment weather and it will take several years for any reasonable amount of hospitals to be built and start operating. In one of the towns of Fife, a shipbuilder accidentally creates a different kind of hull for a ship due to a error in building calculations. However, when tested, it is seen that this new hull is somewhat faster and a little more durable than previous hull designs. This can go a long way to helping Alba... The years have not been kind to him. However, the one thing he found joy in was beer. One day, after a night of carousing with friends, Olaf decided that Denmark should become a world power in... beer. Olaf immediately set to work on creating a centralized beer production and distribution center in Copenhagen in order to ration and distribute beer due to the shortage of drinkable water in the realm. The peasants are pleased by this since the ale and beer allows them to drink away their sorrows AND stay hydrated! Olaf also decreed that ministers are not to make binding decisions after noon due to drunkenness. Even leaders must be stopped from making terrible decisions. Olaf also promotes Christianity and monastical life to ensure his adherence to the faith, and please the Pope in some respects. The number of bibles in circulation begin to increase as more and more monks join monasteries, and the number of beer recipes also increase in circulation throughout the realm. After all, the godly men of the monastary sure know how to make good ale! To continue the spread of the faith, Olaf also offers benefits, such as less taxes, to landowning families and lords who spread the Christian faith in the realm, as well as those that talk smack about Sweden. Many of the landowning aristocracy and lords happily take up this offer. In August, tragedy strikes as Olaf I is found dead in his bed. He is given a ritualistic viking burial, though he is given Christian last rites. His brother, Eric I takes up the throne soon after, may his reign be long and prosperous. Eric immediately sets course for action to secure the Danish presence in Scandanavia by first sending an expedition team to the mythical island of Greenland to look for supplies, colonize, and return information. News of their travels are expected to return by the next year. Eric also decrees more ships be built for the Danish navy, to secure the seas for the Danish against any menace, most notably the Swedes. He also creates an admiralty that would ensure command over vassal and liege ships that are raised in conflict. Several ships are sent along the straits to the north and east and begin harassing Swedish vessels. The Swedes do not take this kindly and demand that Eric I cease his activities. In the Copenhagen Beer Centre, one brewer discovers a new technique in beer brewing, which allows ale and beer to be produced faster while maintaining its flavour and richness. The beer quality produced and rationed out is drastically increased, increasing peasants happiness and overall opinion of their lieges. With the arrival of the Pope's call to arms in a Crusade against the Turk menace, Eric I seizes the moment and joins the Crusade. He calls to arms any able knight or warrior to fight for God and Jesus Christ. A force of around 8000 strong is raised and are expected to arrive in Constantinople in the next year with Eric I at the helm of the army. Deus vult! The Zirid dynasty welcomed the delegation with warm greetings, allowing their Muslim brothers into their palace. Talks were made by the Almoravid delegation with the intent of forming an alliance between the two dynasties. The Zirids knew they needed allies in North Africa, fearing the Normans in Sicily, and heartily accepted the offer. The two dynasties are now interlinked in an honorable pact. Wanting to maintain internal peace, the Sultan lightened the load and increased overall tolerance of foreign religions within his borders. The Jizya tax was lowered to many infidel subjects pleasure and approval, and small churches were allowed to be built, however with the provision that bell towers are forbidden. Several churches to Christ prop up within the borders of the Sultanate, allowing Christians to practice and pray in peace. Several hardline Islamists share their disapproval with the Sultan over these changes. Berbers are also encouraged to settle in Andalusia, one of the newer regions of the Sultanate. With encouragement from their Sultan, many families travel and settle within the region. This causes some tensions between the locals and the newcomers, however nothing breaks out of notice at this point. Setting his eyes to conquer more, the Sultan orders raids on the Majorcan islands, however when the attackers arrive, they barely find anything of note there, only a few small fishing houses, barely even a village. This comes as a surprise, as well as an opportunity for the Sultan should he take it. An armorsmith in one of the major cities comes up with a new design for armor, using ancient designs as inspiration, creating "scale-mail". This type of armor is stronger, and more durable than the leather and cloth armor currently used by the armies of the Sultan. The Sultan takes note and commissions the lowly armorsmith to share his designs with the realm for rapid adoption. Alright so apparently historically France (as a kingdom, not individual knights and nobles seeking personal glory) did not participate in the first (technically, "only" crusade in this rp's perspective) because King Philip has been excommunicated. So you guys setting sail for Next Year In Jerusalem, if you want the mass of the French mobilized nobility to help out, help me get Philip back into the graces of His Graces.
My turn is written, but I'll wait a couple days before I send it in case people want to negotiate with France for whatever reason.
The Byzantines originally asked western Europe to "restore" the Holy Land to the Byzantine Empire, but instead, due to the schism in 1054, the west carved out their own crusader states. Are we going to keep the schism split between Rome and Constantinople or would we possibly mend ties to the original heirs of the Romans?
What sort of godly man would allow a greek fief such as emperor alexios to attain sovereignty over the holy lands? the appointment of holy men by a secular office is enough of a crime against christendom. The holy lands should be free from the reign of corrupt pretenders such as the greeks, signore. Babbada baba boopi who wants to buy my mirrors
How's the turn going?
I'm aiming for a release on Sunday.
Sorry guys, turn will be delayed to Tuesday/Wednesday. Work schedule fucked my plans up.
