Hello again, I'm running an RP game.
To any newcomers, welcome! Ask other players or myself about setting up your country and playing.

It is the year 2365. A century has passed since the Second Civil War, and many more years since the Third World War. More than five centuries has passed since the industrial revolution, which transformed the world beyond recognition and has catapulted many former backwaters into superpowers and killed the old ones. One has dominated the Americas since the 19th century, and that is the United States of America. With the exception of two brutal civil wars in the 19th and 23nd centuries the country has enjoyed access to wealth and technology that has made a mockery of all that came before it. But civilization is fragile. It has existed for less than 1% of human history. The latest iteration of this civilization is the experience of “modernity” that came out of the enlightenment, an attempt to rectify the wrongs of the past and (for the first time) to use the power of reason and science to construct a better society. After six centuries, this bold experiment is finally coming to an end.
You play not as the United States nor Mexico, but as one of the groups of peoples living within it. Whenever it be an army dedicated to saving America from its enemies, or a band of migrants seeking to establish a new home, or a state seeking independence. It will be up to you to ensure that no matter the circumstances, you carry out your duty to the last for your people. Finding them a new home or merely surviving is a worthy goal.
RULES:
1. Send in a PM to Sobotnik, with the following title: "Name: Turn X"
2. DON'T write turnsheets that are too long. It may be tempting, but turns take longer if you do it. I also find it harder to understand turns the more you write in them, and there's more room for error too.
3. DO write up to 10 and no more lines (of commands) in your turn.
4. The PM you send will take the following form for the first turn:
Note: Groups you can play as can range from states (US States) to migratory groups (like Cuetes on the map right now) to army units (like an army regiment) or any kind of coherent organisation similar to those three (and you can change from one to another over time and through play too)
Name/state:
Flag: (image is 250x150 pixels)
Name:
General/leader: (In addition to name, describe their background and how they came to be)
(the above can be modified within reason depending on what flags and names you like.)
(You must also send in your commands:)
Military: (Everything involving your military goes here. Includes changes on the map via force.)
Domestic affairs: (Everything internal such as economy, law, and social policy.)
Diplomatic affairs: (Everything external. Includes changes on the map via diplomatic methods.)
Copypaste: (Any flavour you want to put in here.)
Due to the nature of the new world in which you find yourself, there is a considerable amount of freedom to experiment. You can create all sorts of groups (with weird languages, cultures, religions, etc) which seek to carve out a chunk for themselves. The United States is quick to accept groups if they prove their loyalty, but to secure a future for your people there may come a time to fight. If you choose to start as a state, it's possible to create new states or modify the borders of existing ones.
That's the gist of things. Make your turnsheets, post in the thread, make comics and announcements and such. Overall try to do your best at making your goals reality.
First turn will be turn 1, with each turn covering a period of 1 year. You will send in both your info and your commands. You can ask me questions in the thread or in steam where I’ll happily give more information about the world and what’s going on. If people want, I can make some additional articles/media. I also suggest you post about your state/group/leader (maybe a picture or a biography if possible).

So is there a central, federal government of the USA or are the states so powerful that the federal government is essentially just for show, sorta like the Holy Roman Empire?
So is there a central, federal government of the USA or are the states so powerful that the federal government is essentially just for show, sorta like the Holy Roman Empire?
US Federal government is at its most centralized and authoritarian, although this varies widely over the country. Powers range from state to state, with some being under de facto Federal administration while others are nearly mini-federal governments unto themselves - the power structure in general is much more uneven
I can write up other stuff (like that in the OP) about various aspects of the future society if anybody wants btw, flavour type stuff
I was just curious to how to join as a state if there is an overarching federal government, especially when there is a "military" section for the turns to send in. I suppose it's safe to assume that whatever states the player chooses are the ones that are "nearly mini-federal governments"?
Sounds kind of like a confederation thing to me. Sort of how the CSA would have been if they'd survived

the assumption is that players joining as states are (nominally at least) loyal/allied to the Feds. you'd be expected largely to assist (sending some taxes and manpower for wars). In return the Federal government might be able to help you (depending on which levers you pull to receive the benefits of the administration) and intervene in various conflicts
in many ways the US government expects a lot more from the states (mostly taxes, conscripts, and loyalty) than is the case in earlier centuries, but the governors also have a lot more power within those borders too
Sounds like it's a modern day feudalism in a way. I may join in, just undecided as to where.
[editline]25th May 2017[/editline]
Would I be permitted to play as a political party within a state vying for power of the state?

A lot of that yeah, although there's a lot of directly administered places too
Going to be playing in Texas.

Hey Scorpious how about an alliance between Texas and Florida?

Maybe after you see what direction I'm going to take after the first turn. It'll be a surprise, but one you may want to distance yourself from depending on how you're directing your state.

We can work together to fix that!
I've been talking with Sobo. Florida at this stage is roughly 80% or higher white, 15% or so black, and the remainder Hispanic. The majority of the hispanic population fled to Cuba or died when the southern portion of the state flooded and the remainder intermarried.
So that left Florida as a Conservative, southern minded powerhouse.
Catholicism will be accepted here.

Works for me then!
I wonder if Mormons like black people or not. In Mormon theology, black people literally were made from Satan and his kin.

Current Seat of government of the USA: Los Angeles
Events of the years 2365 – 2366:
-In this year the United States celebrated the 500th anniversary of the end of the US Civil War, an event that very much defined the early United States. But it comes at a time of unease – especially on the borders. The Vice President Andrew de los Dakotas holds a difficult position. He held a meeting with Javier Nores of the Cuetes recently, who has provided military support to the Federal borderguards in putting down rebellions and rival Mexicans. This meeting did not go well, for Javier demanded that his hard work had to be compensated with a bigger subsidy because thousands of his men had died fighting for America. Andrew refused, stating that the Federal government was bankrupt. Unable to reconcile, Javier left and declared the he was no longer going to fight for the US government.
-One of the hottest and most powerful heatwaves in recent memory begin in the summer of this year, leading to depletion of many water reservoirs and crop failure. The bulk of the damage occurs within Mexico, where many of the Captaincies struggle to find enough food and water. Unable to do so, they appeal to the US Federal government for aid. The US government refuses and towards the end of the year hunger and starvation rear their head among the peoples of Mexico. The Cuetes make yet another appeal to the USA for help but the Vice President refuses to let them in unless they disarm upon crossing the border. Javier refuses. Andrew then reconsiders their offer, but decides to drum up military support from the states first to improve his bargaining position before meeting with Javier again.

The Patriots - Joshuadim
Leader: Nathanial Cross
Home: New York

-Nathanial Cross was once a loyal soldier to the United States, born into a middling family and raised to value the philosophy and values of the Old United States. In his youth he served in one of the Federal Borderguards that regularly crossed over the border into Mexico to help crush warlords who refused to toe the line. Much of this involved setting ambushes, traveling over hard country, defending parts of the Trumpetine wall, and intervening more than once in the internal politics of Mexican druglord confederations. On these expeditions, he gained a great deal of experience and numerous awards and decorations for his excellent service – including the purple heart and the medal of honour. After he was awarded command of regiment and personally helped to bring down the notorious druglord Estebon he eventually had a change of heart and left the military to buy himself a ranch in upstate New York. There he did a great deal of soul-searching over his experiences and came to the conclusion that he had to become a revolutionary if he was to continue his service to what he thought the United States ought to be.
-He began like all great movements do, which was to write his manifesto and publish it onto the New York internet, and smuggle copies of it elsewhere. Although the internet is very much fragmented, a few cracks and gaps allow his manifesto to fall through into the hands of dissatisfied veterans who were told “You can make America great again!” After inevitably building up a small following Nathanial built a secret compound and stocked it with supplies and weaponry that he bought off the black market. There they honed their old skills by manufacturing pipe bombs and building a shooting range by stacking cans atop a fence in a field. This isolation brought protection from the authorities (especially because they refused to use any form of communication that could be tracked), although it also meant getting new recruits and recognition was hard. In 2365, they opened up onto the public stage for the first time by bombing a tax office in Brooklyn, and then a police station in Queens. Immediately afterwards a few tax protesters joined their ranks. New York is heavily taxed and the people are sick of taxes, but few act yet. This balance could yet tip.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
Leader: Jonah Calvert
Capital: Annapolis

-Old and wealthy, Maryland was the birth of religious freedom and later became home to the capital of the United States on her southern border. Benefiting from her close proximity to the seat of Federal power, the people of Maryland grew rich. But this was not without its drawbacks, as Federal troops have aimed their guns on Baltimore more than one time in order to secure her loyalty to the union. Washington DC lost its former importance as capital, but this matters little to Maryland anyways – as long as the government remains strong she will benefit from the spillover out of the city. The numerous farms and fisheries of the state feed the urban populations of the east coast (including New York), and the governor Jonah Calvert understands this very well. A distant relative of the Lord of Baltimore, he rose to power from the support of the crab fishermen who wanted him to revive a dying industry, and from the grandees of Annapolis.
-Part of Marylands problems lie in her dependence upon the Federation. The ranch system is becoming well-established here, where people till the land for the ranchers in return for job and food security. Their rising power contrasts with the cities, whose cosmopolitan foundations have been rotting for some years – no surprise that in 2365 the ranchers around Annapolis declared public support for Jonah Calvert and insisted that the ranches were loyal to his cause. As a consequence he was able to push through a grand project to rebuild and expand the dockyards and ports of the state, with an eye to build and handle some of the biggest shipping possible (these days, usually windjammers) Irrigation and drainage networks were also improved at the expense of law enforcement in the cities. Although even rural parts have problems, for the road and rail network is in an atrocious state and reserved mostly for the army. In an attempt to change this Jonah petitions the Vice President to help send funds to rebuild some of the infrastructure. The petition is lost in the bureaucracy for several months until Andrew responds, promising he would rebuild every bridge on the Potomac in return for sending a detachment of the national guard to help him over the coming year.
-Although now Maryland has been able to expand agricultural exports, cities such as Baltimore no longer have anything resembling a functioning police force. To restore order, Jonah sent in the National Guard (or Crab Backs as they are known) to patrol the streets and to put down any riots and protests there. The national guard is also employed to help dismantle ruined buildings, mostly in order to clear space in and around the urban centres. A lot of slums are cleared in the process, and the remaining residents are moved into the rather drab and ugly concrete buildings still standing in the cities. To make them more appealing, the government hires young artists to paint murals on them. The church takes an active part in these efforts to reinvigorate the youth, using its growing influence and power to organise community projects and young people in general. The consequence is a lot more Catholics in the pews. But these efforts are not just restricted to the urban areas, for a great number of crab shacks (supported by the state or the church) have become very popular throughout Maryland. While a good place to get a bite to eat and a drink, they also tend to be a fixture in many communities where people talk with one another and often organise as well. They identify strongly as Marylanders, and care little for the bureaucrats on the opposite shores of the Potomac.

Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp

-Pennsylvania has always been home to religious dissenters ever since the first ones arrived here over seven centuries ago. Many of them went on to play a founding role in the creation of the United States itself. Later on a group of anabaptists made their home here, and caused a great deal of tensions with their hosts. A commitment to a relatively peaceful and simple living combined with their deliberate withdrawal from the world and conservatism put them increasingly at odds with the United States. Despite pressure from above, their numbers continued to grow and they not only retained their Germanic dialect (which soon evolved into a separate language), but also became a coherent ethnic group as well. When the atheistic and materialistic USA of the 23rd century suffered crisis after crisis and went through prolonged social and economic decline, many people joined the anabaptists and abandoned cosmopolitan life. Among them was the grandfather of Samuel Lapp, the current governor.
-Samuel Lapp was born in the Mennonite colony of Nei Zweibrugge on March 5th, 2323. Although he came from such a background, he took an active interest in politics from a young age and moved away from the colony to “King of Prussia”, a formerly massive commercial area outside of Philadelphia that collapsed in recent years. Running for election in 2350, he won the mayorship of the town of three thousand and ran it well, being largely responsible for demolishing most of the ruined office buildings and designating a new (smaller) mall in addition to building defensive works. In 2363 he ran for the office of Governor on a “Republican” ticket, winning the support of most of the commonwealth and ousting the democratic candidate Johann Butch. The city of Philadelphia reacted poorly and had several riots that had to be put down by a Federal field army. The city has been in decline for a long time, with low birth rates and rising death deaths.
-Samuel Lapp began his term by declaring Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch to be an official language, but in an extraordinary shocking turn of events, he also declares the English dialect of Anglësch to be its own language and thereby replacing Standard English as the one of administration. Taking it a step further, he introduces Anglësch to schooling and eliminates English from the curriculum. An official complaint is lodged by numerous political organisations to the courts who think that English should remain. But the state courts shoot it down by saying “English is no longer the language of the people here” and citing the inability of the commonwealth inhabitants and the Federal politicians and civil servants to understand nor communicate one another. The complaint makes its way to the Presidency, where the President declares “No attempt to remove English from public instruction will be tolerated” and nothing much else. It comes at a time when the language question has caused bigger headaches in the west, and has prompted a New York journo to declare “English is no longer a living language”. He is beaten to death by a mob.
-Samuel Lapp and his reforms did not just touch language, but the nature of schooling too. He secularizes public schools and gives parents the option to send their children to private anabaptist schools. The effect of this was the withdrawal of many children from public schools, leaving the remaining public schools mostly full of peoples of colour who themselves withdraw into the decaying urban ghettoes. After more questions and prodding from the Federal government questions Samuels loyalty, he responds by declaring the Mexicanos to be savages and doubling down on public endorsements of the sitting government. He follows by forming the Zivilmiliz or the “Civil militia” from the national guard and begins filling the ranks with men who don't follow the sixth commandment as well as most. The vice president, having enough on his plate to deal with, offers to ignore the language question in return for Samuel sending the civil militia to support him for the next year.

Republic of Florida – Snoberry Tea
Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III

-Florida is one of the states that did not do too particularly well in the crisis of the last century. Rising sea levels drowned the coastal cities, and rising temperatures slowly made the state warmer and wetter. Miami was eventually abandoned among other cities and many of them were rebuilt further inland, while freshwater aquifers were ruined by increasing salt penetration. Tourism likewise declined due to the general conditions of the United States, but one constant remains in that the land is still excellent for agriculture. Transport has gotten more difficult, so many of the goods for export tends to be things such as cane sugar, dried fruits, alcohols (especially citrus wines), and marmalades amongst others. Large and complex canal and irrigation networks serve to keep the farms productive and free from salt water, although it is far too late for the cities. Most Floridians now live in smaller towns and farming communities, and regularly attend the growing Mormon temples. Cosmopolitanism collapsed with the large cities, and much of the Hispanic population eventually left (through migration elsewhere and increasing hostility to their presence) during and after the crisis of the last century. The result is a much more conservative state filled with model citizens whose roots run deep into the land, even if their language has drifted away from that spoken by the civil servants of the far north.
-The governor Jebediah Deitrich is able to command a great deal of respect (coming from a wealthy family that owns a lot of ranches) among the Floridians, which grants him a great deal of power. Florida is an important state to the union (on account of its agricultural production, phosphates, and wealth), and has consequently been given a great deal of free reign in return for regular taxes and agricultural exports. With such power, the state began to expel the Hispanic populations and to build a large and well-funded loyal Florida militia. The family has also been responsible for the construction of numerous phosphate mine complexes and nuclear power plants in addition to ports which can handle fishing fleets. In turn this has given them a great deal of power within the state and allowed them to administer it with ruthless efficiency, treating it almost like a gigantic ranch in itself. Profitable and confident, the state is the informal leader of the southeast and has an assurance that it can rely on the support of Georgia. It is of course no surprise that this year, the Vice President Andrew asked them for support in a standoff with the Cuetes in Mexico.

Order of the Holy Synod – Emperor Scorpious II
Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr

-Religion is a part of the human condition, and despite the attempts of modernity to banish it to the past it came back in force. Mormonism exploded out of Utah and spread rapidly and aggressively throughout the south and west wherever it could. Modern science, technology, and philosophy ultimately failed to find the answer people were looking for. Families disintegrated, the people became rootless and their souls shrank to nothing. The crisis that ended over a century ago resulted in many seeking a new religious life, and Texas was no stranger to this. The Catholic church swelled in size as religion became central to life once more. The collapsing functions of the state were ceded to religious organisations who took it upon themselves to restore charity and good works as secular society found itself incapable of doing so. The result was an organised, strong, and confident faith. Among their number was Otto Urban Jr, a former bishop who left his vows to become politically involved. The Mormons rapid growth and increasing control of the Federation prompted him to found the Order of the Holy Synod. Advocating for standard Catholic positions, it also seeks to combat the Mormons wherever possible.
-While the modern legal system of the USA makes it hard to acquire firearms (or do much else), in practice this has been rarely the case since the state has increasingly lost control over the country and ceded many powers it considers non-essential away. Consequently the Orders paramilitary wing (The Knights of St Michael the Archangel) are not only able to acquire all of the firearms they need, but also can avoid trouble. They also stockpile weaponry and ammo in other parts of the country and organise local militias, although the Federal field armies in Texas make it very difficult to organise. A lot of their guns are suspected to originate from Mexico, but it is hard to establish if they really do. The political wing of the party has much less success, for although they win rural seats, they don't make inroads into the secular and cosmopolitan cities (even after donations from Florida and two political endorsements came in. After citing numerous problems, the news organisations respond by publishing articles “fact-checking” these claims and derides them mercilessly. A rally in Austin was countered by what remained of the gay community (their numbers greatly reduced by STDs no longer controllable with antibiotics), and attempts to appeal to protestants fell flat when the protestant churches declared they did not wish to support a bigoted candidate. Otto responds by derisively calling the Mormons “Unies” and encourages others to call them likewise (for their Unitarian beliefs).
-The cities of Texas have avoided collapse for the most part, held up by massive federal subsidies and the salaries of the field armies who go on leave there. Federal patronage benefits Houston especially, one of the few cities left in the country where “the baths” are still common (and which also happens to be one of the rotating capitals). The rural parts are especially volatile due to religious conflict between Mormons and Catholics, while the cities are loyal to the government. Despite the crises besetting America, the ruling classes have largely held onto power as they have for the past four centuries. The federal grandees are concentrated in a few cities and institutions for the most part, from which they still operate the levers of the state. In order to preserve their safety they move from state to state, (the present capital being Los Angeles) where they bring with them a vast array of soldiers, civil servants politicians, clerks, secretaries, journos, corporate peons and other hangers-on like a vast noxious fart cloud. It is of no surprise that this class is resolutely opposed to anything that should weaken their control over public life, and take efforts to limit the activities of the Order. In spite of this the Order manages to set up an additional Holy Synod branch in Louisiana.

Events of the years 2366 – 2367:
Current Seat of government of the USA: Los Angeles
Veep (Vice President): Andrew de los Dakotas
President: George Abraham Roosevelt (Flavio to friends and family)
-The wet season in 2366 came late, very late. In that time, the last reserves of water ran out and a famine broke out in Mexico. Large parts of the southwest adjacent to Mexico were also affected, but the Veep Andrew managed to move enough food and water to the Federal cities to prevent a repeat of the famine of 2353. In spite of this, food shortages scythed many down. Armies from Florida, Pennsilfaani, Maryland, and other states were raised and marched down to Texas in the early months of the year. They arrived in Houston, where water shortages and overcrowding led to people drinking infected water that in turn led to an outbreak of cholera. Most of the casualties were among the Maryland soldiers who were the original source of the outbreak. In addition, many other soldiers suffered because the government was forced to primarily accommodate the Floridian soldiers due to their relatively massive contribution to the effort (in the process heavily draining the Feds of funding). In March, Andrew mobilized them once more to the Mexican border and held a talk with Javier. The Cuetes, badly starving and very much demoralized agreed to the terms of the US government and crossed the border to settle along the Pecos river in April.
-Unfortunately for the Cuetes, the river was running very low and there was very little food available. A number of American officials later began selling them food at vastly inflated prices, often in return for their children (who were freely sold into sharecropper contracts and taken to ranches to work). The Cuetes then grew angry at this mistreatment and then Andrew decided to move them further north to El Paso (his regional headquarters and military base). Soldiers had to be pulled back from the Trumpetine wall to cover this migration due to manpower losses from the Cholera outbreak, during which the ambitious Gran Capo of the Sinaloa seized the opportunity, mobilized twenty thousand men and pushed through the border in September. The Cuetes heard of this and deliberately slowed their march to allow them to enter. They then went east, ransacking numerous ranches and recruiting several more to their cause before occupying much of the length of Interstate 10 and the town of Ozona in November. Although the Cuetes are now encamped outside of El Paso with the main forces of the Veep and the supporting states keeping an eye on them, refugees are fleeing western Texas while the armed forces in the eastern parts of the state have been mobilized to counter the new threat.

The Patriots - Joshuadim
Leader: Nathanial Cross
Home: New York

-After a hard winter spent training and drafting new plans, the Patriots became ready to step up their attacks. More bombing runs and fires are lit at tax offices throughout the state and several more join their ranks – although this brings them to the attention of the state authorities. This would prove to be the Patriots undoing after an attempt to once more do a bombing (via driveby) on a police station in New York, although they miss and accidentally blow up a meth lab on top of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich village. It causes a fire to break out and spread out of control throughout the neighbourhood, burning the police station down anyway. The two patriots were later dragged out of their car and beaten to death, but not before one of them revealed more incriminating information. The consequence was that a plan to raid a federal bank in the city was revealed, and local investigators managed to locate the compound before it could be carried out.
-A unit of the New York rural cavalry division travelled over hard country and laid in wait before raiding the compound at dinnertime. After gaining entry they discovered a great stockpile of weaponry and pamphlets intended for dissemination in addition to two cars with a lot of metal plates bolted onto their sides. About half of those present were captured (some executed) and the compound was seized the authorities. Nathanial luckily avoided capture because while out for shooting practice he had gone to take a piss, and had missed most of the action. He nonetheless managed to recover what he could of his movement and fled to another compound further upstate. Despite being declared a public enemy and now the subject of active investigation, he was able to still buy a lot of guns off the black market. Many of them were the very same guns that had been confiscated during the earlier raid, for the police had sold them onto the black market. In the new compound, Nathanial began recruiting some drug dealers as another revenue source for the party. New pamphlets began appearing soon afterwards as well, decrying the American government for crimes ranging from murder, terrorism, bombing innocents, and hypocrisy.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
Leader: Jonah Calvert
Capital: Annapolis

-Food, and getting enough of it is a problem that all people encounter at least once in their life in Maryland. With the droughts wrecking havoc throughout the southwest and unseasonal conditions contributing to a poor harvest late last year, food shortages have reared their head once more in the state. Although there is no true starvation, a great number of people go hungry and in their misery many get up and march on Annapolis where they deliver petitions begging for food and employment. Jonah felt rather moved by the images of skeletal children marching down the streets of the land he was entrusted care of, and so he declared a new policy shortly before the end of winter. In it, he declared that the state would buy up one twentieth of all grain produced and distribute it to the hungry each year, with new granaries to be constructed for the purpose of storing the grain to protect against future hunger. In addition, he also announced a “state artisan” role for those persistently without work nor land to till. Churches and what remained of the schooling system were to collaborate on training people to work as plumbers, carpenters, electricians, and a wide variety of other skilled jobs that could be feasibly put to work on both statewide and rural projects. Some of those who are literate and idle are put to work making copies of scientific, artistic, and philosophical works. Jonah apparently has big plans for them, but until they are trained he is unable to make use of them for another year or so. In the interim he gathers together all of the sharecroppers without work during the summer and puts them to work on repaving public roads, digging irrigation networks, clearing ruined buildings, and helping to rebuild several of the railways (re-establishing a line into Pennsilfaani). In return for their hard work they were compensated with one litre of (weak) wine a day, five eggs, a kilogram of bread or rice, and a kilogram of meat (excepting meatless days, advent, and lent, in which fish is provided instead). At the end of each month, they were also rewarded several bolts of cloth.
-The fishermen of the commonwealth were encouraged to travel out further and further, especially with the state now demanding a lot of fish to be brought in half of the time to feed the people. Having gone out so far they inevitably move into international waters where they end up being raided by pirates. After an official complaint was lodged and the US coastguard was unable to help, the Commonwealth quickly bought some yachts and torpedo patrol boats and threw them out to sea to help defend the fishermen. Unfortunately for them, success was mixed because of poor training and the boats being very decrepit, and in one instance the brave sailors of the “Naval national guard” were shipwrecked in the Carolinas and cared for by the local Gullah. The Gullah often trade with the Marylanders (in addition to carrying out smuggling) and the return of the sailors was hailed by the people of Baltimore especially. Unfortunately one of the Gullah sailors was badly sick with cholera and caused a minor outbreak in Maryland, although due to timely intervention it was contained with the exception of a few soldiers who accidentally spread it to Houston. Despite being mostly contained in Maryland, the government is spooked and starts to close down polluting industries next to rivers and the seaside unless they disposed of it properly. Although efforts to clean the waterways seem to be going well, there is still the question of how to resolve the failing sanitation systems and where to relocate some of the industries (most of them recycling and tannery based).
-While the nineteen hundred and fifty six proud Marylanders marched off to Houston to help the war effort, the mood at home was a bit less easy than it once was. With news of terrorist attacks throughout New York State and racial tensions escalating in the Carolinas, Jonah ordered the Crab Backs undertake a bold new strategy. They were to head into the countryside and towns where they would work as a sort of police force, making sure to make themselves friendly with the locals and establish regional offices. They took pains to learn the locals names, query their concerns, write voluminous complaints down, and develop relationships. In a way it heavily undermines the existing police force and in some ways the legal system as well, for many of the Crab Backs often resolve minor disputes without trying to involve the law. The lawyers of Annapolis lodge an official complaint about this (which is ignored), for the people and ranchers alike seem to prefer the Crab Backs. To distinguish themselves, they paint crabs on their helmets. With the year coming to an end however, bad news comes from the Federal government. Not only have many Marylanders died on the campaign, but Andrew was unable to secure many funds due to Florida and later Texas eating up the bulk of the surplus allocated. Nonetheless, Andrew attempts to make good on his promise by conscripting all of the workers of his personal ranches in Virginia and Maryland to work on building crude wooden and masonry bridges over the river wherever possible and expresses extreme regret for the lives lost.

Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp

-The start of the new year could be seen as the start of a new era. Over the winter the language question was endlessly debated within the halls of government and by journalists in their typical rag pieces. But the Veep Andrew arguably ended it by declaring that English or not, Pennsilfaani was loyal to the union regardless. From the ranks of the Zivilmiliz, several brigades are raised and sent to accompany the Federal forces to Texas. Of course while this sign of loyalty was much appreciated, it required a second public statement from Samuel to affirm that, yes, he was loyal to the US government. One of the hidden consequences of his action was that through some wrangling in the courts it was determined that anywhere in America (such as a state or municipality) could change their official language away from English. This immediately re-sparked the debate on language in the southeast where a number of states have tried for years to resist classifying the Ebonian dialects as official languages. Ohio meanwhile immediately went and declared their own dialect to be a “unique language” and what was once a trickle is threatening to spread out of control. Numerous regime loyalists and other American nationalists are consequently extremely angry and blame Pennsilfaani, with several attacks on officials being reported towards the end of 2366.
-With the language question settled (for now), Samuel is free to begin renaming all of the place-names within the state according to the vernacular. Among the changes are Harrisburg becoming Harrisbarig, Philadelphia now Filadelfi, Lancaster to Lengeschder, and Pittsburgh now named Pittsbarig. Shortly afterwards, the administration slowly phases out the standard “English” primarily in favor of the local dialect for most purposes to accompany these changes and by the end of the year a great number of signs are being replaced. The governments plans obviously didn't end with the renaming scheme, for a great number of infrastructure and public beautification plans are enacted for the major cities (primarily Filadelfi). These include demolishing ruined structures (such as stadiums and old highway interchanges) and significantly downsizing the cities. Most settlements are now rarely more than 200 hectares in size, with Filadelfi being a rare exception at 1400 hectares. Most of them had their defensive walls rebuilt and new roads were laid out using broken up masonry from ruined buildings, and even some roads within the city were repaved with asphalt. New parklands were designated likewise, although a great deal of land is now also used to grow vegetables and fruits. A number of bridges and roads on the way to Maryland are also repaired. Rail services between Maryland and Pennsilfaani are also operating again, albeit with steam locomotives purchased from Florida. The Veep later asks Pennsilfaani to extend more military help if possible, although when pressed he is reluctant to admit that he has much to give them in return for it.

Republic of Florida – Snoberry Tea
Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III

-Florida has often for undeserved reasons possessed a disproportionate clout within the federation, whenever it is because of its bipolar voting population or now because of its significant agricultural output and high manpower it can command for warfare. In return for significant financial and material aid to develop industries in Florida and to give the Catholics in Texas more political power, the state was to furnish thirty thousand men to assist on a campaign in Texas. Immediately after doing so, the Federal government began sending tax collectors throughout the Midwest (angering those states in the process), raising taxes and collecting materials which were then sent by rail and windjammer down to Florida. Work was focused primarily on facilities dedicated to processing agricultural products, and to this end a large number of state-owned factories were set up in numerous cities such as Jacksonville and St Petersburg. Given the crops grown in the state, the bulk of these facilities were dedicated to making alcohols from fruits, tinning them, making sauces and purees, and cornmeal. In turn a lot of these would be shipped off for export to other states. Unfortunately coming by skilled workers is hard, and many of the factories are being built slowly or are undermanned, resulting in poor productivity. In addition, a lot of them have brought pollution back and in Jacksonville the waste dumped into the sea contaminated the shellfish there, causing local Gullah fishermen to grow sick from cholera and cause an outbreak back home. When the inhabitants of Jacksonville (many of them Gullah) lodge complaints, they are simply ignored.
-The Florida political system (one of the ones still masquerading as a democracy) is unique in that it still has active polling, carried out by a guy in an office whose job is mostly to phone ranchers. This year he published his first post-electoral results, with the Good Catholic Trinitarian Party {GCP} leading (Led by Jebediah Dietrich, Currently in Power) [59% Polling], followed by the Unitarian Social Front {USF} (Led by Ulfric Jager, Mormonist Party) [21% Polling] and the Unitarian Rights Alliance {URA} (Led by John Baptiste, Protestant Party) [15% Pollig]. The Cosmopolitan Society for the Rebuilding Miami-Dade {COSM} (Led by Marcos Rivera, no religious affiliation, idiots) [5% Polling] trails in at last. Although they are in power and performing well, Jebediah is not one to rest on his laurels and realises that unless he took an active role, then sooner or later it could come back to haunt him. Given his complete control of Florida, he and his family began working to make Catholicism the dominant force in the state. This year it has largely taken the form of minor tax breaks and social allowances for families converting from any other religion to Catholicism. At the same time, the GCP has been quietly firing Mormons from government posts and slowly increasing legal restrictions on them. The USF obviously realises what is going on and begins to organise an active campaign against the governor, pointing out that the Gullahs of Jacksonville are suffering especially under the poor conditions in the city.
-Like any good ruler, Jebediah ignores them and busies himself with grand projects designed to propel Florida to new strengths and to rebuild a great deal of its infrastructure and industrial base it once possessed. He is especially keen on nuclear locomotives for the railways for whatever reason, selling off steam ones to Maryland and Pennsilfaani while buying Federal nuclear trains at great expense to furnish the new lines he is building. A lot of ranch workers and townspeople are brought out to work in the sweltering heat where throughout the summer and autumn they work to bring as many of the old rail lines back into service. They succeed in rebuilding the main trunk line connecting St Petersburg, Orlando, and Jacksonville, but hundreds of workers also die from heat exhaustion and malaria in the process. Further connections are underway to make it easier to move more crops and uranium ores for processing, although later in the year stormy weather causes endless construction delays. This poor weather has also caused delays to the Public schooling project, an attempt to revive the college system of centuries past for all students. While admirable in its goals, financing it is extremely difficult at best and even the wealthy Florida government struggles to find enough money, resources, and manpower for the project. Even the loyal ranchers are reluctant to pay more in taxes, and the Federal government outright states to Jebediah that it is bankrupt and additionally refuses to send more money unless it continues to provide military support to deal with the problem in Texas.
-Sensing that further help may not be forthcoming, Florida begins an ambitious attempt to form a coalition in the southeast of several states, composed of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and the Carolinas. Citing their considerable wealth and military power, Florida implores them to start work on improving common infrastructure and trade between themselves. Georgia and the Carolinas immediately begin to align, having received assurances from Florida that they could expect help on dealing with their “minority problem” should any issues arise. They begin by signing compacts to eliminate some tolls and other taxes to allow common businesses to operate more easily in one another's states along with simplifying license regimes. Unfortunately for all parties, while business goes rather well, the Gullahs become more restless over the year after the supreme court declared (using Pennsilfaani as precedent) that their language is legitimate and should be elevated to some kind of official status. While Georgia and the Carolinas immediately pass some token reform measures, the Jacksonville Gullahs are unable to get any legislation passed despite holding protests (something made worse by local pollution and cholera outbreaks). After numerous ranchers send petitions asking for intervention, Jebediah directly asks the Federal government for an answer. The Veep more or less says “Sort it out yourself”, and after asking Georgia and the Carolinas, opts to grant Florida complete authority to fix the crisis as they see fit (up to and including military force).

Order of the Holy Synod – Emperor Scorpious II
Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr

-Good works are essential to Catholicism, and so it would be no wonder that although the Holy Synod is primarily interested in a violent crusade to drive the Mormons out of Texas, they are interested in seeing the lives of ordinary people improved as well. Otto founds the “Good works agency” as a branch of the Synod, explicitly devoted to organising Catholics on a parish level and putting them to work on varied community projects. Much like the Gullahs, Mennonites, and Mormons throughout the rest of the country, the religious revival is also a chance for many to cleanse themselves spiritually through building healthcare clinics, fixing infrastructure, and spreading the good news through pamphlets and setting aside time to train more priests. This much more benign organisation manages to win papal approval and in June they used party funds to buy a piece of land in Dallas on which they built a seminary. The Knights of St Michael are often at the forefront of these efforts, using their strong organisation and military experience (being veterans) to organise projects with military precision and efficiency. Not only was the seminary built quickly and to a good standard, but many other side projects are to a similar standard. In the countryside they won a degree of support from a number of villages and ranches in the countryside for helping to build irrigation pipelines and waterworks for storing clean water – a fact much appreciated in a time of drought. Unfortunately they also accidentally reduce several water sources to Houston in the process to help feed the farms, contributing to severe water shortages downstream.
-With a strong “Pro-peoples agenda”, the party managed to win a lot of support throughout the summer for their work and won over quite a few Ranches in addition to securing seats in smaller towns. The cities of Austin and Dallas began to turn out a few councillors and some seats in the Texas legislature end up being occupied by the party due to a significant amount of help from the Federal government in giving them places to hold rallies and an increase in funding to districts controlled by the party. With such successes, the party goes a step further and coordinates with some Protestant groups to get some of the poorly-enforced gun legislation revoked (with some pressure from the Feds on the Texan government) to allow parishioners to defend themselves from Mexicans and other wild animals. The Knights take advantage by stockpiling more guns and munitions (including military assault rifles) and start to openly train with them. Having also increased in numbers, they form a sort of “officer corps” and begin to increasingly resemble a trained and organised paramilitary instead of a loose collection of gun owners.
-In August, the synod begins to encourage their mostly Hispanic audience to start learning “Vulgar Latin”, so that they could read the bible as it had been written nearly two millennial prior. Of course, learning an archaic form of your own language is something rather difficult to do and raised questions about the necessity of it in the group. However, fate intervened quite suddenly in September when a migration of the Sinaloa crossed into Western Texas and went east , ransacking major ranches and occupying a great number of towns as they marched down Interstate 10. Throwing Texas into complete panic and chaos, most of the garrison soldiers left behind in Houston and other parts of the state are immediately mobilized and head west to meet the Sinaloa (who have camped in Ozona for now). Out west, a lot of infrastructure set up by the synod is badly damaged and many refugees are forced to flee east from the horde. Many of these refugees end up causing a lot of overcrowding and food shortages make matters worse, which is followed by several more cholera outbreaks. The newspapers and pamphlets distributed by the party offer prayers for those suffering, while the health clinics are stuffed to the brim with the dead and dying. With such widespread shortages, they can do little but pray.

Community of Gullah Geechee Peoples – Amfleet
Leader: The Reverend Dr. Antwon Mviluki

-One of the most prominent theologians and scholars of Black History around, the honorable Rev. Dr. Antwon Mviluki (literally translated, Antwon the Penitent One) is a popular religious firebrand in the southeast, mostly famous for his sermons and writings which declare that the current instabilities and rise of state governments as a sign of the imminent failure of a sinful United States that has always enslaved blacks across the centuries, with the most egregious forms abolished but never fully dismantled or driven away. To him, the Gullah Geechee community represented the most pure and untainted African culture in the US today, the paragon of enduring repression for centuries and the model for a new black homeland away from Africa. To that end, he demands the creation of an entirely separate and brand new nation. Although he has been in trouble many times with the law, he has many friends in the US south and is slippery enough to avoid capture.
-Although his movement has seen many setbacks over the years, they received their first big boost in 2365 when Pennsilfaani removed English as an official language and renewed the debate on the language question. Due largely to this, many of the former legal barriers to official recognition are now gone, and Antwon was able to convince the governments of Georgia and the Carolinas to make Gullah a recognised secondary language (although English remains the primary one of administration). Although it was mired in much controversy, he received a lot of help from leftwing elements in the city of Charleston (Chaa'stun) to protest and help organise several strikes. The strained governments finally give in after several lawyers (citing Pennsilfaani) issue legal and financial threats. With this weakness in mind, the Gullah movement receives a major boost and begins to organise, partly copying the methods and precedents set by the Mennonites of Pennsilfaani.
-Guns were always easy to acquire on the black market, and numerous Black Pantheresque organisations have formed over the years to help protect the rights of black people and to fight white oppression. The birth of the Ranch system and the rise of sharecropping is particularly loathsome, as in many ways it resembles a return to slavery – even though these sharecroppers signed a contract! Given the great power of the Ranchers in the countryside, Antwon sees the only way to acquire freedom is to move east away from them. Many of his followers have already done so, moving into cities such as Charleston and Jacksonville where they became fishermen and involved in smuggling and trading. Obviously both the Ranchers and state governments don't like this, and in 2366 the state governments of the Gullah area pass laws further tying sharecroppers to the land and making it illegal for them to leave. To remove claims of it being slavery, they declare that it is the land to which the sharecropper belongs instead of the Rancher, and that the Rancher can only trade parcels of land and not people. This obviously doesn't work that well, and in 2366 when dry weather reduces the harvests and pushes up food prices, a lot of sharecroppers throw in the towel and move away. The bulk of the sharecroppers (who are invested into their land and have families established there) stay put, although there are worries that their loyalty is in question.
-This ploy obviously doesn't work, and the black militias continue to intervene in minor disputes where they get into fights with the Ranchers (often ending violently). A lot of black people at threat of falling into the dependency of sharecropping are given help to move east to the coast, where local communities have set up farms and fishing wharves. But this isn't enough for Antwon, who seems to envision a self-sufficiency equivalent to that enjoyed by the Mennonites. This self-sufficiency has an exception for Maryland, whose fishermen and smugglers are happy enough to trade, excepting a time when some Gullahs fishing off the coast of Jacksonville in Florida where industrial waste had contaminated the shellfish population. The result was that people who ate the shellfish caught cholera, which later spread to Maryland. After news of the cholera reaches Antwon, he orders people to dig their own wells for fresh water and to keep them far from waste. Further building onto this self sufficiency, he implores people to raise livestock, build simple roads and defensive works, and one-room schoolhouses in which to educate children. These schools teach the basics of Gullah literacy, folklore (Boo hags), and literature such as Brer rabbit. Most of these new communities (and some older ones) are very often based around churches, (African Methodist Episcopal) which are often the biggest and most important building in the village. Many of these churches are aligned with the Gullah movement and are growing in popularity throughout the southeast. Unfortunately for the Gullah and Antwon, their state governments are attempting to retard the movement, with most support from the landed Ranchers. During the summer of 2366, the state governments do a major bust on leading nationalist leaders and deport them to New Jersey, although many of them later escape after paying bribes. In response to these failures, the Ranchers send petitions to the Federal government and to Florida asking for intervention to control the movement.
Look at everything that exists, and observe that•it is already in dissolution and change, and as it were putrefaction or dispersion,•or•that everything is•so constituted in nature as to die. - Marcus Aurelius
Events of the years 2367 – 2368:
Current Seat of government of the USA: Salt Lake City
Veep (Vice President): Andrew de los Dakotas
President: George Abraham Roosevelt (Flavio to friends and family)
-With a hostile army in Texas and soldiers being mobilized to counter it, the USA has been forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel for funds. There are none. The collective of machinery, well-tended land, infrastructure, and skills are all in decay. There is nobody to borrow money from, and the money is weak. While New York was previously in a position to support the feds, recent terrorist attacks and growing public dissatisfaction forces the governor to withhold both taxes and manpower to “control the situation”. After a major riot in New York City that causes a great deal of damage to the local infrastructure and wrecks military supply lines, the bankrupted state finally squeezes a concession from the Vice President solely because of the “rebel situation” in New York. Money will be printed to cover the budget shortfalls in return for the state ramping up arms production and directing industrial production. Although the increase in issuance is actually very small, it sparks a huge loss of confidence. Many people rush to exchange their dollars for other goods (fearing a repeat of the pre-Garcian dollar inflation) and set off an inflationary spiral and in the process destroy the last sinews of the banking system. By the end of the year, national gold prices have more than tripled and a few businesses have collapsed as a result. The last of the private banks are nationalized in response.
-In Texas, the Federal field armies reach San Antonio through the railways and reinforce themselves in the town against the Sinaloa, only for the horde to swing north around the city and march straight east for Houston itself! When this news makes itself known, the troops in San Antonio are ordered to sally out and follow the Sinaloa to Houston where the garrison army laid in wait. Despite low morale and attacks by Texan citizens and militias, the Mexicans arrive at Katy to the west of Houston where the Houston garrison reinforced themselves. Using a heavy artillery unit, the Feds batter the Mexicans to the west of Katy relentlessly until halfway throughout the day it is discovered they have run out of shells. A quick investigation revealed that the crucial deliveries of munitions and other supplies to Houston from New York did not arrive. Following this revelation, the Mexicans sent their cavalry on a mad charge down the Interstate 10 to attack their guns while ordering a desperate frontal assault on the town (pushing hard on the northern flank). The artillery was quickly decimated and fled, while the Federal soldiers in the town (despite fighting hard) were demoralized heavily and their northern flank collapsed shortly after the artillery was seen routing. The rest of the Federal soldiers fled back to Houston with heavy losses and the Sinaloa went on to thoroughly loot Katy. Map of the battle: https://i.imgur.com/cca1tgF.png
-News of the battle reaches Houston, prompting panic as immediately a large number of factory and office managers flee from the city because of “important business” elsewhere, while the remains of the garrison return and begin setting up the defenses. But news later came that the Feds were coming, and sure enough a massive Federal army (reinforced and with new spirit) was on the move. The Sinaloa began breaking into the city by taking advantage of the fact that the demoralized garrison couldn't cover the entire perimeter. Without supplies the garrison starved and were unable to use their artillery, until the timely arrive of supplies to Houston (from Florida) improved their morale and gave them a small number of artillery shells. A captain spots the Gran Capo of the Sinaloa and orders him shelled hard, killing the man and his bodyguard. The death of their leader causes a great deal of confusion and disarray, especially after Catholic militias begin harassing the horde and causing them to believe that the Federal army had arrived sooner than expected. The Zacatecas later hold a meeting with a Catholic bishop who convinces them to go west, with five thousand heavily armed men peacefully leaving a trail of destruction in their wake as they force a hard march west and dodge the Feds. As for the rest, with the Federal army quickly approaching and some smaller groups quickly splintering off, they have no choice but to surrender to the US government. Outside of Houston, the Federal government agrees to take in most of the Sinaloa on the condition that they pledged fealty to the USA and provided soldiers and support to the Federal government in dealing with any future incursions. The Veep was instrumental in this, choosing a large area of mostly empty land in the western parts of the state to settle them (conveniently also meaning that future incursions will pass through them). Unfortunately it's a move deeply unpopular in many parts of Texas and it has created more enemies within the government for Andrew.
-As for the Cuetes, many of them are eventually somewhat placated by the arrival of food supplies and shortly afterwards a miracle happens. After a national campaign led by numerous groups throughout the country offering “thoughts and prayers for those affected by the drought”, heavy rains come to drench the parched soils of Texas and the southwest in the later part of the year. The grasses grow green and harvests are restored, with the Cuetes (although still angry) finally getting enough food to eat and Andrew declaring that he will order all states who sent military support that they will be scaling back operations in April 2368. It is declared a miracle by the President of the Mormon faith, who recently returned from a major religious gathering in Moab for the “Convention of Moab”. A great number of representatives from all of the temples met in the city to define matters of orthodoxy and scripture, eventually coming to form the “Moab Creed” which is published this year. In addition, a new and revised religious script reworking the original Hebrew, Greek and English of the bible and book of Mormon is brought out this year at the same time to the satisfaction of all parties. It is nicknamed “Book Cizzen” after the common (or vulgar) English word for “Citizen”, which in the common tongue of Americans means “That which belongs to the citizenry, is common to all”. While difficult to read for many, it is the last book published in the United States that can be read by most people in their own language.
-Down south in Mexico, the last remnants of the farcical “Mexican government” are dissolved by the Gran Capo of the Oxaca, a prominent regional warlord who brokers a power sharing agreement with other warlords in the former Mexican federation. With the anarchy left behind by the migrations of the Cuetes and Sinaloa, they quickly fill up the vacuum and seize control. The Gran Capo (Emilio de los Oxaca) is a convert to a Mexican mystery cult that combines some aspects of Catholic Christianity and native religious beliefs in an attempt to “go back to the old ways”. Although he has a great deal of power he has been unable to spread his religion, yet he does lift the old religious bans that were a leftover from the old Mexican government. Mormons take advantage by spreading southwards and converting a number of local elites to the new faith and focusing primarily on the soldiers. Catholicism still remains strong in the older heartlands to the south, despite their best efforts.

The Patriots - Joshuadim
Leader: Nathanial Cross
Home: New York

-The crisis in Texas does not touch New York much, it has interesting events of its own to deal with. Nathanial realized that this war was producing immense strain on the government, and in turn this manifested itself in the people. If one could exploit this, then he could certainly gather a wide base of support once they started crying out for peace. Having escaped the authorities eye for the time being, he started recruitment again (this time vetting new recruits for their loyalty) and eventually had a few he could trust with establishing a base (fitted with defensive measures and escape routes) in a warehouse of lower Brooklyn. Although it's a wealthy and relatively prosperous city, it still had a great number of former veterans, homeless, urban poor, and the other rough-ends of society dropped off and largely forgotten about. Most of them had little to nothing to lose, no family nor nation to fight for, and potentially a lot to gain. Homeless people formed the basis of a simple network through which the Patriots could gather supplies, information, and new recruits. Many of these new recruits would be smuggled out into the countryside where they received training and equipment. Often this meant simply shaving an old veteran and giving him a rifle, but for the homeless this meant actively training and preparing them for a new kind of life.
-This new kind of network was a great success, although a militia raid nearly ended badly. Two cars being modified with “plate armour” were reported there, and when they investigated many of the Patriots were caught by surprise. Several of them held off the militia while the bulk of the team fled with the armoured cars, the former ultimately dying and committing suicide to avoid capture. Nathanial knows that even a single misplaced word could ruin everything, hence his entire team was purged and reshuffled to make way for those who swore an oath to kill themselves rather than be taken in by the enemy. A tall order, but the Patriots who swear it are exceedingly devoted to the cause. This new generation are the ones who restock the stores with firearms and munitions, buy body armour from the black market, and seep out into the countryside to bring people over to the cause. Eventually as the year wears on, a small number of country people (sharecroppers through to workers and the occasional soldier) warm up to the idea and become warmer to the Patriots, mostly for their anti-tax and anti-conscription stances. Lately both have been on the increase lately, and tax avoidance is on the rise likewise.
-In the city however, tensions have risen much more quickly. Under pressure from the Federal Government, New York expands conscription measures and attempts to find ways to make more money. It does so by offering the rich an option to buy an exemption from conscription. This angers the residents of Manhattan so much that they start rioting (numerous Patriots take part or even encourage them), setting fire to many buildings in the process. Eventually the riot is brought under control, but not before they end up damaging the port, many warehouses, and try to loot some of the windjammers filled with military supplies docked there too (a well-organized team of Patriots is successful in stealing a great deal of weapons and munitions). One of the fires ends up destroying an ammo dump intended for artillery in Texas, plus an adjacent factory in the process. On top of all this, hundreds die in the riots, and the bankrupted city is forced to appeal to the Federal government for assistance with reconstruction due to the damage. The Veep agrees to print money and give federal funding to the state in return for complete control over industry for the duration of the “Texan crisis” (the governor accepts). Within several weeks much of the damage is well on the way to being repaired, and wages are massively increased to win the support of the workers. Elated, they quickly spend all of their wages on food and drink (consumer goods production stopped so industry could be reserved for the military) – only then for prices to rise rapidly in response. Growing inflation and a workforce already starting to tire of the war could prove to be troublesome for the governor. It could also spell opportunity to others.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
Leader: Jonah Calvert
Capital: Annapolis

-As news of the disasters in Texas made their way back to Maryland, many expressed public anguish and regret over many of the brave young men dying (mostly from cholera) in their line of active duty. Sensing the mood, Jonah ordered the erection of a large monument outside of the Annapolis naval academy to pay homage to those who served their state and lost their lives as a result. The governor went further still by inviting all of the cadets to the inauguration of the monument and declaring to them that a new age was to begin. Shortly afterwards, the staff were given a nice sum of money to pay for work on training a new generation of loyal and competent officers, sailors, and captains to serve in the national guard. Many volunteers also joined up in a show of patriotic support, although some of the more cynical citizens placed bets on which disease would be first to kill them. No wars are on the horizon for now, but numerous troubles erupting within New York State has many worried about a potential war being brought close to home. In emulation of the old American traditions, Jonah encourages people to take up skeet and target shooting (something the academy practices) to ensure people have knowledge of how to use guns. Unfortunately for most, the degraded state of the arms industry makes it difficult to manufacture cheap guns for civilian use and most of them tend to be military arms bought off the black market. Munitions follow a similar story, with supplies of both them and arms being erratic and prices varying widely.
-Until that war comes, Maryland will spend that time rebuilding society to withstand it. During the slow and painful collapse of pre-civil war capitalism, a great deal of skills were lost and education is wholly incapable of transferring much of the refined knowledge any further on. To this end, a lot of textbooks on electronics, quantum physics, robotics, information theory, advanced machinery, etc are printed and put into longterm storage in numerous locations throughout the state (often underground bunkers with good drainage). Some of the more practical guides (carpentry and metalworking) are handed out to the first graduates of the “apprenticeship” program currently ongoing in the state. Unlike older ones, these men are then quickly assembled into trade guilds and unions which are tasked with regulating their trade and building up a store of skills. While a noble endeavour indeed, they find little work for the time being with the exception of projects organised by the state. Most of these relate to the repair of libraries (and the construction of new ones). More worrying is the declining literacy among children. With the church often being the only institution willing to teach children the basics (usually those from ranches) of how to read and write, these kids are often unwilling or unable to travel to the shrivelling cities to borrow books that would let them continue their education. Many of the ranches are gradually transforming into self-sufficient communities of their own and only the ones close to the towns with libraries and apprenticeship schools have the ranchers bother to send out people to train in them. What's more, when they return the rancher typically gives permanent positions to journeymen to carry out work on the farm.
-Back in the cities and larger towns, Jonah declares a number of interesting new experiments for the benefit of the people. These range from the quaint (raising pigeons primarily for meat in the cities and to carry messages in an era where most people have access to a telephone), to the more sensible policy of collecting waste from tanneries and other industries to produce biofuel which is sold off to interested buyers (typically ranchers) or to power the gas plants which keep the dimming lights on. A fleet of old buses that run off natural gas are also repaired and brought back into service, although now instead of serving the cities they now operate as a state-owned delivery service. Many of them are gutted out and stuffed full of agricultural goods, while people carrying chickens and rolls of leather jump onto them at one place on the road and then jump off again closer to their destination. These buses have been rather helpful in Maryland winning contracts from the Federal Walmart Office (a wing of the government entrusted with food distribution) in DC. Although cheap and constantly damaged by the poor state of the roads and bridges on the way to the city, the buses do happen to move food from the ranches extremely quickly and do so at a lower cost than their rivals. The state ends the year with a surprise budget deficit, like most others in the federation partly due to rising inflation rates and taxes being unable to cover the rising prices.

Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp

-Amid the general absurdity of life in the United States, the people Pennsilfaani do not pay much heed to the concerns of the outside world, as is their nature. Samuel Lapp quietly continued his support for the Federal government by sending supplies and maintaining a unit of his militias there to serve. They don't see much action, but hopeful news later arrives that in April next year he will be able to start calling them back from service due to the crisis now being resolved. There are little indications that any sort of crisis will come to pass in Pennsilfaani, even with the growing number of attacks on government officials by American nationals and the disturbances next door in New York where the “Patriots” have been stirring up rebellion and riots. Some refugees move into the state, finding work in the public works projects that have been set up in recent years. The main focus seems to be on the establishment of farmers markets as a place for Mennonite communities to sell produce locally (instead of exporting it), in turn giving employment to a number of small traders and craftsmen who benefit from local markets and ties. Much of the rest of the trade being handled is with Maryland, although later on in the year rapidly growing inflation devalues the money. The people simply start using gold and other metals as a form of currency, and begin to abandon money wholesale. Tax receipts decline steadily and the Federal tax collectors begin to grow angry as revenue dries up. They demand either increased taxes or a taxation in kind, something that Samuel Lapp has yet to respond to.

Republic of Florida – Snoberry Tea
Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III

-Jebediah has been ruling Florida with a firm hand, the grip of which has been tightening as its influence grows into the other states and the Feds back them up. After being granted the right to intervene in the Gullah Geechee dispute, Jebediah meets with Dr. Antwon and hammers out a deal to form a protectorate under Florida out of lands from Georgia and the Carolinas. Despite protests from numerous ranchers, the deal goes ahead and the Gullah win their own state to run as they please. While the gentry of those states are displeased, the common people remain hopeful that this means future changes for the better. In some ways this was proven true throughout the year of 2367. In spite of budget shortfalls, Jebediah orders a complete halt to the rail projects to organise a state funeral for those who fell from disease and heatstroke. In addition, not only does he give the families of the workers immunity from taxation and grants a number of them financial stipends, but he orders plaques to be set up along the route of the now named “Floridian Sacrifice Rail Line” so that people would not forget their efforts to rebuild the railways. His humanitarian efforts don't stop there, for the creation of the Gullah state immediately prompted questions from the residents of Jacksonville who wondered why they weren't part of it. In a series of rapid moves, Jebediah forces through legislation that gives Gullah secondary language status and recognises a number of key historical locations with official status to appease the more nationalist-minded of them. As for the common people who work in the factories and fields toiling away, he appeals to them by immediately closing down unsafe factories and setting up new facilities to safely collect and store industrial waste. New sanitation facilities to clean and store fresh water are also built, while emergency food and water is provided to those currently sick. By the end of the year, the Cholera outbreak is declared over. Indeed, conditions have improved so much that some Gullahs are moving here to take advantage of employment opportunities and the decent public services.
-The improvements in Jacksonville put pressure on Jebediah to start work elsewhere through Florida to gain the appreciation of the people. With the help of the Catholic church, the state sets up an official “Good works” agency modelled off the one in Texas, with the aim of helping the poor and downtrodden throughout the state. Food and drink is collected, medical clinics set up, and hostels to care for the common people are built in a number of towns and cities throughout the state. Appreciative they are, many become more faithful Catholics and the power and prestige of the church only grows. Concerns of a “separation of state” don't hold water like it used to, as now there are bishops who seem to openly wield some kind of political power. Understandably the strained Mormons of the state protest against these changes, and they aren't the only ones who are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs. In order to pay for new education reforms (which mostly consist of setting up schools to train people for occupational roles such as carpentry and plumbing), the state has been trying to squeeze out taxes and export duties whenever possible to cover expenses. Growing inflation eats away at the value of money, and the ranchers have grown annoyed with Jebediah. His heavy accommodation of the Gullah at the expense of fellow ranchers in Georgia was problematic enough, but growing tax burdens has left many of them grumbling. They gather together to demand either a freeze on taxes or (failing that), some kinds of political or economic concessions to convince them otherwise. With many of them holding a great deal of power and influence, they feel confident about getting something, especially when a lot of soldiers are outside of the state in Texas. For the time being however, Jebediah continues to not only maintain but send needed supplies to the armies in Texas, in turn playing a crucial role that won the praise of the President. Quietly, the ranchers curse the president.

Order of the Holy Synod – Emperor Scorpious II
Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr

-Conflict is something that's been common to Texas for a long time. 531 years after her declaration of independence from Mexico, and 34 years since the last massive Mexican incursion the Texans are once again being called to arms. Otto Urban was among those who (upon hearing the news of the invasion) immediately called a halt to all efforts and declared that the Synod was to expend all of her efforts on repelling the Sinaloa. Of course he didn't want to get in the way of the fighting, which is why he moved the headquarters to Dallas (in spite of the heavy Mormon population). Following this, he ordered all of the militias to fortify the churches and to make themselves available to assist the Federal armies whenever possible. A large number of volunteers (about six hundred) from the knights immediately swore that they would do what they could to oust the invader. They were organised into the “1st Texan Knights” and wore yellow uniforms with red crosses to distinguish themselves from the Feds. Although their small numbers and lack of supplies and experience was a significant mitigating factor, they were able to help defend many smaller towns and ranches from the Sinaloa horde as it swarmed east. They also helped to organise militias to lead raids on scouting parties and to pick away at them whenever possible. Despite the Sinaloa victory at Katy, they were soundly beaten later outside of Houston with assistance from the militias whose relentless pressure and desire to make conditions for the horde difficult rendered supply gathering and encampment that much more difficult.
-When the horde broke up, one of the smaller groups went west and threatened to attack a number of towns using stolen equipment from the Federal forces. With no help coming, the bishop in the town led a delegation out to receive the leader of the so-called “Zacatecas” to implore him not to attack the town. When asked why, the bishop claimed that god would curse him for desecrating a religious site and that a (non-existent) federal army lay in ambush, suggesting instead to go to California (a suicidal move for any military force). Seeing the point, Alfredo of the Zacatecas declares he would travel to California instead, unaware of the dangers that lay ahead of him on the route. He left with his five thousand men to go west, facing an uncertain future and one marred by death and destruction. The bishop wondered to himself if it had been ok to lie to the man.
-After the great victory by Houston, many of the militias were lauded praise for their efforts in the conflict. The Knights and by extension the Synod also received a lot of public approval for helping to stop the invasion, protect the people, and afterwards even playing a major role in the reconstruction. The Good Works agency immediately sets up tent cities, chilli kitchens (who eats soup in Texas?), and hospital wards to tend to the refugees and those other persons displaced by the crisis. Furthermore the party is able to call in favours from Louisiana to help with the reconstruction efforts, and in a show of power they rebuild a great deal of irrigation works and start to clear land in the towns for “urban victory gardens” to grow vegetables and rear pigs. It also attempts to get the government to expand the fishing fleet to help deal with the food crisis, although the lack of fast transport and refrigeration for fresh fish makes this nearly pointless. Nonetheless, with such displays of power and organisation the Synod is able to strengthen its firm grip in Texas and win a massive amount of support. The Federal government indirectly funnels money to the organisation during reconstruction efforts (due to it taking the first moves), angering the Mormons who were originally beneficiaries of Federal support. The Vice President Andrew (nominally a Mormon himself) is viewed as weak by the Mormons for allowing the Catholics so much free reign. Tensions rise, and soon attacks on Christian churches begin in Dallas with messages such as “heretics” being daubed on their burnt-out walls.

Provisional state of Gullah Geechee Protectorate – Amfleet
Leader: The Reverend Dr. Antwon Mviluki

-With the full backing of the Federal government, Jebediah Dietrich III of Florida declares that a new understanding had been reached among the Gullah Geechee. With Floridas extensive power and influence, they were able to bring Dr. Antwon to the negotiating table and in a historic accord, the Gullah Geechee were to be granted control of their very own state, with Brunswick as the state capital. Although it is to be a protectorate, and excludes several areas with Gullah minorities (such as parts of Florida and northern Carolina), it nonetheless fills many of the demands that Antwon had been agitating for a long time. The new protectorate will take time to create and assemble into a working state, but nobody is questioning the decision that Antwon will become the new governor. While numerous ranchers and politicians in the new state are very upset by this new state of affairs, they lack the support of either Florida or the Feds to protect their holdings. They are entirely at the mercy of Antwon.
-Antwon begins his governorship by declaring the Gullah language to be the primary one of administration and Standard English as a secondary one (plus room to adopt new ones if the need arises). He also declares complete religious freedom (introducing the establishment clause as a cornerstone of the state constitution) and allows anybody of any faith to come set up shop there. While this prompts a few Catholics from Florida to move here, the Mormons are eager to take advantage and establish new temples in Edisto and Hilton Head islands. Their reasons for doing so are mostly driven by Antwons declaration to build new towns on the sites of former black colonies, with those two being particularly important sites historically and culturally. Although there is little there at the moment, both sites already have religious structures to provide charity and assistance to the people living there. There is not much else to speak of in both sites besides a ramshackle of tents and crude huts hastily assembled together by migrants who were told that in the new towns there would be jobs and food. They grow hungry and restless, and keeping the peace will be hard. Without a military force of any kind and with Georgia and the Carolinas unwilling to supply weaponry or men to the new state, Antwon was forced to reorganise all of the Black Panthers under his control into a kind of state militia that patrols the borders and towns. In practice little has changed, for despite their new official status they are still poorly armed and trained compared to most Federal and state soldiers. Making a true fighting force takes more.
-Like other new institutions hastily cobbled together in a short meeting in Brunswick, the coastguard and merchant marines are not too impressive. Lacking all kinds of resources and formed by volunteers, the coastguard is little more than a few fishermen willing to sacrifice some time to help rescue people from trouble and to operate the lighthouses. The merchant marine meanwhile is little more than former smugglers and small traders granted the right to trade and to run ferries. Both suffer from lack of funding, facilities, and training, and as a consequence they are unable to protect against pirate attacks (usually small raids on fishermen and smugglers). Antwon has been able to blame a lack of resources and time to organise a response, but this excuse might not work forever. Most of his efforts lately have been focused on the pressing issue of land reform, something that sharecroppers hold quite dearly. Since ranchers hold the vast majority of land (about twenty men own 90% of the land in the state), they are an obvious target. No action has yet been taken, for many of them have numerous connections and legal means by which they can cripple the embryonic Gullah state. In the interim, the sharecroppers have been abandoning cotton and other cash crops in favour of potatoes and rearing pigs and chickens (among other livestock). The poor land on which the free Gullah can raise their livestock and grow crops is a major constraint, and as more Gullah move to the new state their demand for land grows ever higher.
