For those of you who don't want to read the thread:
Essentially, another way to earn hats would be cast in a manner similar to the gibus. A player would have to dominate multiple enemy players with the desired hat (five, ten, twenty ect.) to acquire it, sort of like looting. I realize it's quite farmable, but Valve is full of brilliant people, and they could probably figure it out themselves (in the other thread, I listed multiple ways that could at least partially stop farming).
I sent Robin an e-mail to see what he thinks. I'll post it if I get a reply.
hats are supposed to be rare, this could easily be obtained by a friend with a hat
it had better be a pain in the ass to get like the damn pyro achievement

Did you even look at the thread?
I wrote one, nay, two suggestions specifically to prevent that. The hat could not be acquired off of someone on your friends list; furthermore, you could only dominate someone once, and that domination would be tagged so you could not dominate the same person ever again (or at least until you lost the hat you had).

If you really want us to read why don't you post it here. I mean, we don't need to click your link, and Ctrl+C Ctrl+V isn't that hard.
Also about your idea, it would still be easily farmed, and if not, wouldn't be hard. After some time you'll eventually have dominated enough players that had the hat.

Hats are supposed to be rare, but in fact, are only rare for some people.

I suppose this is true. Since the sniper vs. spy update, I'd gotten no hats until January 2nd; I managed to class-specific craft a Baker Boy on that day. Then I proceeded to idle a fancy fedora after only a few hours, got a respectless rubber glove ingame not even a week after that, and about a week ago I got a pyro's beanie via random hat craft. Four in a month, and we've still got a few days of the month left.
The hat rarity is really only subjective; some people get unfair amounts and others none. We need a way to work towards them specifically.
People would find a way to farm every hat really fast.

Read the thread.
As I said in that thread.
I do not agree. Or at least not with that pathetically low number of people you need to dominate.
Make it some absurdly high number (100-500 or possibly more Dominations on Different People wearing the same hat), then maybe. Hats are supposed to be rare. It would be pretty hard to get that many people willing to die for you, let alone that many people willing to die for you who have the hat.
It should be skill based and not drop based.
Ideally, I think there should be multiple ways to get hats, but all of them equally impossible. We already have the crafting system, which more or less guarantees you'll get a hat if you stay persistent (or idle), but it's a step in the right direction.
So yes, there should be some reward for skill, but how do you make it so it's not easily faked by players and farmed?

Then this will just create an influx of hat servers, just like achievement/idle servers. People would join, put on their hats, and line up to be shot. Rinse repeat until everybody in the server has dominated everybody else with a hat. It wouldn't be hard for any decently-sized forum like FP or even a Steam group to gather lots of people with the same hat so that they can all join a server at once and let someone dominate them one by one. Soon everyone in the group would have every hat in the game, even if it takes a little while, and then those people will just go and spread their hats to other people.
And as for friends, I'll just tell them how it works, defriend them, join a server with them, and dominate them all as they line up for it.
Face it: there is NO currently-possible solution for allowing a method that involves user action/effort that won't be exploited heavily. The random drop/crafting system is there to keep hats rare, and they should stay that way since I like seeing them every so often and it would be kind of shitty to never see the default class heads ever again...
If they added some more hats for every class, they could perfectly make them nearly free so players can actually customize their looks, which is what hats were made for in the first place.
That would solve all exploiting too.
Kill 1000 different people for a random hat.
Kill 1000 different people playing as a specific class for a random hat for that class.

Still won't stop people grinding them in hat servers and getting all the hats much quicker than everyone else.
1000 different people is a lot...

Maybe an insanely hard achievement
Like deflecting a huntsman into a headshot 100 times on different players on vanilla valve maps
For gods sake
JUST WAIT TO GET THE FUCKING HAT NUMBNUTS
Just craft it for gods sake it's not that hard
Besides all it will make is a hat farming group
Or a friend sets it up removes friends and do it
Also this isn't call of duty hats are a symbol that's all so it should be as rare as possible
How about, for each class:
Hat 1: 1000 kills on different players.
Hat 2: Capture 1000 objectives.
Hat 3: 30 hours playtime.
However they could only be gotten on official maps and maps on a Valve controlled whitelist.
get 100 kills without a single death on a 6+ player team with REAL players

Hat 3: 30 hours playtime.

I have played about 850 hours according to steam, and I've got only 1 hat drop
this idea is pretty retarded, no offense
Valve needs to fix the shit drop and crafting system before implementing any new methods of getting items
Guys, you're forgetting that earning achievements and stats are client-side and are then sent to the Steam servers. Steam Achievement Manager can spoof both of those, so as soon as Valve makes achievements that can get hats, anyone can get all the hats given by those achievements instantly.
If Valve was to make all hats achievement-based, they would first need to rework the entire Steamworks system to totally lock out user intervention. But that STILL won't stop people from grinding them in achievement servers.
Why doesn't valve just take the hat-drops OUT of the equation on any maps that have not been approved?
Why doesn't valve just take the hat-drops OUT of the equation on any maps that have not been approved?
Do you really want to only play stock maps all the time to ever unlock anything?
Do you really want to only play stock maps all the time to ever unlock anything?
He said not approved. Orange_x Could be aproved, and Achievement_Idle would not.
A super team of valve engieneers would examinate the playability of every map, and vote for it to be approved or not.
Guy 1: God damnit.
...
No matter what, people are going to idle and achievement-farm. It's just what people do. There's no way that I can think of to get hats, besides the random drop system. Unless Valve watches over every player, and hands them a hat.
