The Boomstick:
Level 5 Shotgun
Special Attribute:
Attack power increases inversely to the level of your Sentry
Positives:
+35% firing speed
Less damage fall off than the Shotgun
Negatives:
Roughly 1 second to reload a new bullet
-50% Clip size (3 Bullets per clip)
Can only hold 15 bullets (3 bullets in the gun, 12 more to be used)
The Damage level depends on the level of your Sentry. The higher the level it is, the lower the Boomstick's damage will be. This weapon is great for Offensive Engineers, Ninja Engineers and Battle Engineers, and definitely not for Turtle Engineers/Defensive Engineers. The level of your dispenser or teleporter does not affect the Boomstick, only the Sentry's level, allowing you to still be helpful to your team, while at the same time allowing you to do more than camp your farm, letting him break free and help his team through frontline support, flanking, or ambushing, and giving him a chance in close combat should it arise, without having to rely on a lucky Critical Wrench.
-----------------------------------------
Level 1 Sentry or no Sentry: 120 damage (Point Blank.)
Level 2 Sentry: 60 Damage (Point blank.)
Level 3 Sentry: 30 Damage (Point Blank.)
The shotgun looks similar to a normal shotgun, but gets very wide at the end of the barrel (Similar to this skin, but only gets wide near the end: http://temple.fpsbanana.com/ss/srends/thm_71381a.jpg)
Possible Taunt: He tries to fire the gun, but it doesn't fire, so he sticks his head in front of the barrel and looks down, only to get his face blackened by the shot that fires then. He then shakes his head to get the ash off. Also, anyone standing on your head (or behind and above you too) when the shot happens is instantly killed.

What are your thoughts on this concept?
What would happen with multiple sentry guns?
Alright you primitive turtle engineers, LISTEN up. See this? This is my BOOMstick.
~ashineer
I agree with this But only if he gets a line similar to that.
What would happen with multiple sentry guns?
It's only affected by the level of YOUR sentry.
And if you're on one of those odd servers where you can place more than one Sentry, it is still only affected by one gun.

Of course he'd say something like that, it's a BOOMstick. Even if it's just "This is mah BOOMstick!".
K, seems like a good idea, balanced.
Seems kind of overpowered if you are just being an offensive engie that doesn't build a sentry.

If he builds a level 1 Sentry, it still has the same power, for Offensive Engy'ing purposes. Plus, since it's a shotgun, you do have to get in close to do real damage, which means you could be easily spotted then picked off.
Spy Engie!

But this isn't a knife.
This is a BOOMstick! Nevertheless, it would be good for Ninja Engineers.
Also, someone tell me how to contact Robin. If this gets enough positive review, I may send the idea to him.

Also, I think this might be a good idea.
Ok - we need one thread for all engineer ideas. This is getting ridiculous.
I love the idea of a backwards kill taunt, send that to valve.

The weapon itself is fine. The only thing which needs tweaking is the incentive for building a sentry. It's okay, but it doesn't feel quite right.

Did I mention the attack power for the Boomstick is not lowered at all for Level 1 Sentries? Great for ambushes and offensive engineering (And would work wonders on Arena), and allows him to have some freedom, while still being able to defend an area. A redneck with a souped-up shotgun and a level 1 could defend almost as well as a Level 3 sentry.

Show some support for it there, maybe if we're lucky we can get it accepted as an official unlock (Like the Equalizer).
I like the idea. send it to valve.
Most unlockables have something, maybe even a small thing, that can be used for the opposite of their actual purpose. Example: Huntsman, it's not for long range, but there's no laser dot, so if there's someone far away and not noticing you, there won't be that damn laser showing your position.
But this.. there's no reason at all to use it for defense. You can still do it with the charging targe or the normal Über.
Also, there's no damage increase, instead, the damage lowers depending on the level of your SG, and while there is only a 35% higher firing speed, the amount of bullets in the gun is lowered by 50%.
Your idea is great though, just needs balancing.
The taunt should be a reference to Army of Darkness

although you're making my sentry weaker, since if a spy comes up and saps it, i might not be strong enough to stop him.
Negatives severely out-weigh the positives. Needs more ammo.
Someone draw concept art in MS Paint now

It can be used sort of defensively by using it and a Level 1 (or maybe a Level 2) Sentry to ambush. You on one side, the sentry on the other, when someone walks through, you and the sentry start unloading on them, or just turtle away with a level 3. But honestly, this Shotgun was designed for Offensive purposes, not Defensive (Kinda like how the SR was built for Defense, not offense, or the DR for escaping, not infiltrating). This gun is doing 120 Damage with no sentry or a level 1; It's doing quite a bit then, and with the Level 1, A lot of damage can be dealt in very short time.

You're not supposed to be using this for Traditional engineering. This was meant to be used for Offensive Engineers, with level 1 Sentries (which aren't THAT big of a loss), complimenting the P.D.Q. If you don't want to use it, you don't have to.

Not neccesarily. You can pick up ammo from dropped weapons, ammo boxes, or your dispenser. 15 Shots seems balanced to me, seeing as how you shouldn't be spending extended time in combat as an Engineer. More ammo to me would seem a bit too much.

You're giving me reasons to use it, not actual improvements to the gun. It's completely unbalanced and I'd be disappointed if something like this was on the Engie update, I'd surely not use it.
PS: You can still use the Sniper Rifle for attack, just don't be a rushing idiot and use it for long range as you're supposed to do. You can also use the Dead Ringer for infiltrating, if you don't run away when you're cloaked or damaged only to get a kill on someone outside the enemy base.

wait you're contraditing your point there, aren't battle engineers supposed to stay on the battlefield?

Well then, tell me exactly how you would go about balancing it then. And battle engineers have to take a break at some point to heal, so they can get ammo then too.

GOD DAMNIT QUIT STEALING MY IDEAS I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS CONCEPT ART FOR DAYS EVEN

Fuck it I'm pissed.

Single shot, more powerful than the shotgun at close range, very long reload.
Anyone who's recently damaged one of your buildings receives a mini-crit from it.
Anyone who's actually destroyed one of your buildings receives a full crit.
Yours encourages battle engineering, mine encourages engineers to stick to protecting their sentry.

I just thought of this today, man, when thinking about how an Engineer can be more ofensive, and the equalizer trait.
Also, Nice art, though I was thinking of mine being slightly more like a hunting rifle/shotgun.

I know, I thought of it days ago but was trying to get the art done before I posted my idea.
I was even going to call it the Boomstick, even though it's based on a Blunderbuss.

And besides that my idea was much better:

Anyone who's actually destroyed one of your buildings receives a full crit.
You're implying that you can get close enough to the person (other than a Spy) that hurt/blew up your buildings before they're gone/out of useful range? Unless it gave you a speed boost, I'm not sure it'd work that well.
You're implying that you can get close enough to the person (other than a Spy) that hurt/blew up your buildings before they're gone/out of useful range? Unless it gave you a speed boost, I'm not sure it'd work that well.
Unless it's a soldier trying to take it out from across the map, yeah, it's totally doable.
Besides, since there's no damage falloff on critical hits, you pretty much just have to have him in your sights.
Unless it's a soldier trying to take it out from across the map, yeah, it's totally doable.

Well, it's less doable when the one who took out your buildings is, say, an Overhealed heavy/demo/Soldier, which tends to be what destroys a farm a lot of the time. Besides, good Engineers can defend their farms well enough as is. They can't really do anything against an Ubercharge, and Spies are easy enough to take out with the current weapons, right?
It won't be called the boomstick. Even if valve reads this exact thread and picks this idea, it won't be called the boomstick.
Unfortunately the illustration I see is a blunderbuss.
