Ok well pictures are worth a thousand words so:

I've scanned my computer, defragged, whatever, nothing helps, lowering the settings all the way down to low raises the FPS by maybe 10 at most. It used to run great when I just bought it, and every other game still runs just as great as they did.
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG?
Disable multicore rendering, it doesn't work for some people apparently.
Try now.
Also antialising can be pretty had on the processor.
Well for starters, turn off HDR and anti-aliasing. If your HDR keeps turning itself back on at every startup like mine does, then put this into your autoexec.cfg:
mat_hdr_level 0
:(
Also this processor is dual core 3.0 GHz and it's only set to x2 in both of these.

Well I've done everything suggested in the thread so far:

It's an improvement, but still not all that playable.
Does it happen periodically or constantly
Have you tried scanning your computer for viruses?
Does it happen periodically or constantly
constantly
Have you tried scanning your computer for viruses?
Yes, and defrag.
BTW, I tried going into the developer commentary thing to see what it would be like without any players, with close to max settings:

What about other source games?
I think your processor may be bottle necking, can you give a model number of it? like 3400+?

6000+
8800GT
no it is not bottlenecking
[editline]12:19AM[/editline]
have you updated your drivers?
I love my 6000+ too <3
What about other source games?
They run great, L4D runs just as well as CSS and HL2. Even games that aren't source like Fallout 3, UT3, and World in Conflict run great.

Video card drivers, yes.

I would love it if it loved me back and LET ME PLAY TF2.
Have you tried re-installing your video drivers?
Removing the drivers, restarting the PC, downloading and installing again?
Weird... I have almost the same specs as yours but I get 60-120 Fps
Re-format the Harddrive, that works sometimes.

I just always download and install, how do I remove drivers?
[editline]10:49AM[/editline]
Here's everything as low as possible but still on dx9:

Which OS are you on?
I think the method is different depending on XP or Vista. (Or Win7)
Revert to an older driver, I suggest 178.24 drivers.
To remove old drivers: Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
you should just be able to go right over them though
I have XP.
I have XP.
Alright, here's how you do it.
Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Display Adapters > Right-Click on what driver shows up > Uninstall > Restart.
Once you do that, you'll have to get the drivers from Nvidia's site, install them and restart. Hope this helps.
Put your model detail to medium. You will hardly be able to tell the difference, as it only lowers polygons. TF2 is very CPU heavy, and polygons add to that stress. So put the Model Detail to Medium.
That gives me another twenty or so frames per second.

BRB getting a gun to shoot myself with.
Oh no, I didn't make it worse did I? :ohdear:
No I just set it all to recommended settings with the little asterisks next to them which is why it went down, I think it has something to do with the amount of players or something. On all low with 32 players its at 26 FPS, but on highest with no other players it's 38+.

I'm thinking that I will have to do it but I'm going to wait a while before that.
Reformatting should be a last resort.
That map always makes me lag to
Small question, how much stuff do you have on your HD, its a bit odd if it's alot of stuff thats bogging you down.
Also how old is your XP build (when did you install it to put it in english).

I wouldn't expect it to be anything with your HD then, I'm using more space than that on a smaller HD yet I'm fine.
Very strange.
