I used to be able to have good graphics settings, but not anymore.

after i installed windows xp service pack 3 i constanly lagged and crashed and now i have to have: DX81, model settings on low, texture settings to low, shading low, shadows low, simple reflections, no antialiasing, bilinear filtering, no high dynamic range. It keeps crashing and I get 60-80 FPS but i have OS paged pool memory issues.
the specs of this shitfest of a computer is
1GB memory
2.7 GHz dual-core
ATI Radeon X1600
38 GB harddrive, about 7 GB free (it's a partitioned iMac ;_;)
rate me boxes because i have a shit computer if you want to, i just have to save up money so i can pay my loan from my dad and buy the case for my new computer. (and that could take a couple of weeks) but i want to play some TF2 with decent graphics settings, anyone have a tip on increasing the performance??
sounds weird
You could try one of those high fps configs...

Not this thread again.
I swear I saw one exactly like this a few weeks ago with the same content but by a different user.
I've had (sortof like this recently) I could play on default settings for my (mediocre) laptop for ages at around 30fps, but recently have had to put all settings to low@800x600, just to get 20fps.

Shit i was gonna say that
But yeah i don't know if Radeons have the control panel like Nvidia (im sure they do) just set it low.
actually i hate macs, it's just that my parents are macfags and i get their old computers when they get new ones.
Already went into the control panel and set everything to performance.
Update drivers?
Already updated, i think i'll have to wait with good graphics until i have my new comp
Do you have a bunch of mods installed? If so, try moving them/deleting them. I had similar troubles, and it turns out that my 3+GB of mods were really bogging down TF2. Deleting them helped.
It's called 'the game hasn't been optimized in over 3 updates.' I get this shit too. With my old setup, - 3.2 GHz CPU, 256 video card, 768 RAM or what the hell ever - when I first started playing, I got a solid 25-30 FPS on the lowest settings. Every update since then has lowered that and my connection speed to games. Even though I upgraded slightly in November, the War! update further lowered my FPS and connection speed. I only ever play on my group's server now, and that's really rare.

i have no mods at all installed.
Someone stole your graphics card.
Get a detective.
Nah just kidding.
Have you tried defrag? When was the last time you ran a full Tuneup/CCleaner check?
defragged a month ago, never heard of tuneup or CCleaner.

CCleaner is a dick cleanup utility, much like Window's built-in Disk Cleanup. It does more and gives you more control over just what is and isn't deleted.
But yeah, try doing a disk cleanup and defrag.
