My friend has played TF2 for quite a long time with no problems, but a few weeks ago his game started lagging horribly. I know for a fact his specs are fine, it's not fps lag and it hasn't been caused by an update as it just started happening one day with no warning. He has played on both wired and wireless connections and it has done the same on both.
What happens is when he joins a game, it will run fine for a random amount of time before his ping skyrockets and falls back to normal repeatedly, the whole time he snakes around as if he was downloading, however other games will run perfectly fine, including other source games like CS:S or whatever. Once the lag starts, it doesn't stop until he restarts TF2 entirely - joining another server does not help. I've gone through all the options and am absolutely baffled as to the cause - And the solution. Any help?
Same problem, but mine is FPS Lag

Is he using Vista on a wireless network, or on a laptop? Vista has a problem where it'll check for new wireless networks every ten seconds or so, which causes big ping spikes. I had the same problem for a while, actually.
There's a pretty simple fix that I use - Vista Anti-Lag, which stops the constant checks. After installing this my problems cleared up, try it out

What about Anti lag on Windows XP?
I don't know about that, sorry. I don't think XP has the same problem anyway.
I got the same problem with CS:S, with my ping going to around 1000. I just left it for a year and it was fine again. My games tend to get all sorts of extremely annoying problems, but they just seem to fix themselves.. It's strange.
I have a different issue, the entire games skips frames occasionally and it's not lag or FPS drops

If you're on a wireless connection, and your wireless card has a non-regular driver (especially thinking about D-Link cards, there), AFAIK, the Windows wireless service is just sitting here, conflicting every now and then with the other one and causing packet loss. Disabling the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service helped a lot when I was on wireless. It was only on XP though

Sure your graphics card and processor are running fine?
That normally happens when one of them has issues.
Well, Vista Anti Lag fixed it. Tyty.
my lag just makes me stop moving, and happens in all my Steam games. It's nothing wrong with my keyboard but every once in a while I just stall.

On a side note nothing to do with my friend, this happens to me too. TF2 really likes to lag, it seems.
Without wanting to start a new topic, VAL fixed his lag issues but it seems now he gets FPS lag whenever he turns his mouse. We know it isn't related to VAL because we tested it and are once again unsure what the cause is. Thoughts?
I also get FPS drops most of the time when I kill or die, and my game crashes at random intervals after joining a server. Both started after one of the latest updates, had no problems before. I've also heard of others complaining of the same thing. Valve should fix this shit.
Valve needs to fix their game in general. When I first started playing in April, my FPS was good and I had a semi-quick connection time to servers. The Sniper/Spy update lowered my framerate by a chunk and slowed my connection speed a bit. The Classless update didn't really lower my FPS by much, but considerably lowered my connection speed. Then I got a new video card and some more RAM, so my graphics increased but my FPS was about the same. No change in connection speed. The WAR! update has killed my framerate, and somehow managed to slow my connection speed even more. I can't play in a server with more than about 6 people in total, without my game becoming so choppy it's unplayable. When I first started playing, I was playing in a 24 person Arena server and coming in 2nd to 5th as a Medic, and only rarely had any FPS issues.
tl;dr: First started playing had no issues, every update since then has dropped my connection speed or FPS enough that I can't really play anymore.

Try telling him to disable motion blur in the graphics options.
