The Gist Of The Idea: Back in the old days of TF2, we had 3 weapons for each class (Engineer and Spy non-withstanding.). Today, we have many new weapons that... self heal, self heal... oh, there's a surprise. Self Heal. Of course there are others that do other effects, but you get my point. As shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_80281&src_vid=Nx3lVu0_gF0&v=fpgpGl3b3g8&feature=iv I'm not the only one that thinks that the "new" items are a bit wonky. Thus, the idea I'm throwing out here is a server that is only vanilla (Or stock, however you say it.) weapons. If you hate the very thought of this idea, I implore you leave the thread now. If this idea has peaked your interest, I will explain it more in depth in the next few paragraphs, which you can read and digest the information yourself. What Exactly Would This Change?: It would change only one aspect, the use of Post - Gold Rush Update Weapons. The weapons we have currently offer a lot of various tactical choices, however, many of which that do not have a suitable counter-tactical choice, which means that you will rely heavily on old tactics that may not work as well, or blind luck. Compare this to the, dare I say, "Simple" play style we once had, where every move had a counter move, and every counter-move had a move, it seems like it would be for a nice break from the "F***ing Arabic Demoknights!" playstyle that I'm *sure* you all love so much. Other then that, nothing else would change. People can still flaunt their pretty hats, play on stock and/or custom maps, get achievements, trash talk, etc. etc. etc. Why Would This Be Fun?: Not everyone has the "New" weapons (Or the weapons to possibly counter those weapons for that matter.) that people are using on the various servers and maps, however, everybody has stock weapons. Even the Free 2 Play minority. Going back to stock weapons simplifies the game to a much more level playing field for everybody. Just as well, everybody using stock weapons relies on their skill, and only their skill, not their new weapons. It'd also be a sanctuary of sorts for oldfags who are quite familiar with the stock weapons, or just a break for anyone who's tired of them, and wants to take a trip down memory lane. In addition, many updates have been made to the weapons, usually for the better. How Would You Enforce This Idea?: That's one of the main problems, and drawbacks to this server idea. The way I see it, this can be enforced in only 2 ways. 1. Administration Warns-> Kicks -> Bans people who don't follow the general rules and the "Cardinal Rule", if I may, of the server. Thanks to the kill icons for the weapons nowadays, it makes it easy to spot who's using what. If that fails, someone tells an Admin, Moderator, VIP, etc, at which point they check the logs to confirm. A Votekick/Voteban function could be implemented as well, but that should already be. 2. A custom designed plugin to prevent use of Post - Gold Rush Update weapons. I'm only a novice in C++, and know nothing about programming server plugins, nor do I know anyone who can create one. While this option is highly viable, it is also the most difficult to create. If anyone knows anything about this, please chime in the posts below. Are There Any Drawbacks You Can See?: Besides enforcement, the only problems I can foresee are technical problems if a plugin is installed, trolls, and "But I want to use my new weapons!". Respectively, the answers are as follows: Technical problems appear and disappear and are fixed when they need to be fixed, Administration/Votekick & Voteban, Play on another server. If there are any others you think I have missed, please post them and I'd be glad to see what I (And others of the TF2 playerbase) can come up with as a solution. What Can You Contribute?: I'm broke. So, nothing in the way of money (Although I have been looking for a job.). If no income from inside the administration or myself is generated, then the server will run solely on donations (Which will truly test whether people like it or not. I can dedicate my spare time, my energy and such, as well as "Free" forums, and administration (As I am experienced in that field.). Has this been done before?: Extensive search (Server Lists, Google, etc.) has not yielded any results. This sounds like a cool idea! How can I help?: Well if I get enough people that like and support the idea, I'll start a Steam group (Make sure you ask to be added if you want to be.) and we can go from there. Out of the 5 people I talked to, 4 of them said they thought it was a brilliant idea. Depending on the amount of support I get, we can create forums, setup a donation PayPal, get servers up, etc. etc. If you also have any ideas how to make this better, please don't hesitate to post it. It means a lot to hear your critique, and suggestions, just don't get angry if they get shot down. Speaking of donations, will there be Donor benefits?: I'm pretty sure there will be, nothing gamebreaking like Nightteam servers though. You can discuss that in the comments below. This sounds like a terrible idea!: Please tell me why! That's what this is all about, the get feedback, support, and to better the idea. If you don't back up your negative feedback sufficiently, I'll simply ignore it, and I ask everyone else to do the same. Flaming will be reported and ignored. So, please give me some feedback, some support, rainbows, discussions, whatever you like! I just would like to hear what the community has to say about this idea, and it would mean a lot to me personally to see this get up and running some day soon. Regards, Duton P.S. TL;DR I have a cool idea for a server. Read the whole thing.
You'd be surprised how fast this gets old. The new weapons help A LOT in adding longevity to the game.
I dunno. Back in the day people were playing TF2 quite often before we had all the weapons. Plus, Custom Maps (And New Valve Maps) along with a variety of game modes could also increase the longevity.
I made a sourcemod plugin to do this a while ago, and I own a server. Hmm...
Never found it in my searches. And you never told me about it.
Sounds like it'd be a nice change from an arms race, but... Shouldn't this go into the general chat or something? Just wondering.
If I dig up that plugin I'll post a link here if anyone wants it, I haven't tested it though.
There are server like that already. The thing is that nobody plays them.
Sounds like it'd be a nice change from an arms race, but... Shouldn't this go into the general chat or something? Just wondering.
I thought about it, but I had a lot of information and it might've been considered spamming to just throw it all in the middle there, so I just wanted to be on the safe side.
There are server like that already. Although i fucking love TF2, and cannot complain about anything Valve has done with it, I'd love to go back and see how TF2 used to feel. I hope one day this can become a reality. Imagine Valve makes this a whole gamemode... :allears:

And I'm not saying I hate Valve. I love Valve, and I love everything they do (Well, almost everything.) but I liked the stuff they did a while back better.
I'm all for this, the only problem is you need to call it something other than "vanilla mode" since vanilla already covers servers without mods. I suggest "2007 mode."

I'm pretty sure there does exist servers like this out there, but you have to uncheck the "has players on it" box in order to see them.
I'm pretty sure there does exist servers like this out there, but you have to uncheck the "has players on it" box in order to see them.
Zing. Anyway. Nah, even then I couldn't find them. There's a lot of empty servers out there.
I'm fairly sure that you could use tournament mode/some plugin/a creative workaround to forbid weapons instead of relying on mods warning and banning people who use them.
I'm pretty sure there does exist servers like this out there, but you have to uncheck the "has players on it" box in order to see them.
I would play on those servers if there were an easy way to find them.
I've been on a server like this before. It was fairly boring.
