In an attempt to stop idlers, Valve changed the drop system and capped the drop limit. People still idle to get their weekly drops sooner, but those who actually played hours of TF2 a week to get more than the cap limit suffer. I play TF2 a few hours a day and end up getting all my drops by 3 days after the drops reset (including that day).
Valve can keep the current system, but tweak the way the drop limit works. My suggestion is after you reach your cap the drop distances are set further apart, at least 33% further than the previous drop.
Post your changes to the drop system to eliminate idling without everyone else suffering.

Bad idea, I could just rename achievement_idle to cp_hatfarm
Honestly, I don't see any changes that could possibly ever totally eliminate idlers. I thought their more recent set of changes was the best middleground they could find and I'm personally fine with it. It gives me incentive to play "regularly" instead of "all the time" like the previous system and it certainly makes idling pointless other than to get your items earlier in the week. Idling in the new system is akin to using Steam Achievement Manager to get achievements you don't have yet; there's just no point other than removing the fun from the rest of your week.
But hey, let people do what they want to do. If some people never actually play TF2 anymore and instead opt into just trading items as their entire game experience, then nothing Valve does to the system is ever going to stop them from doing that. Play the game, have fun, and know that you're having a lot more fun than the people out there who are obsessed with the "hat economy".
The drop cap is decent. But with all the new hats, its going to be a bitch to get the metal required for them.

Plus, play the game.
Theres so many items the drop rate needs an increase, not on hats though, they're supposed to be rare
I'm having a lot of fun wheeling and dealing with this new trade system, and I'm totally cool with the drop rate and cap right now.
The new idle system is still shit though. Idlers still get rewards, basement dwellers and people who don't stop playing TF2 still get rewards, but people like me who can only play for a few hours a week don't get shit. I played about a hour or so every other day over the last week, I got two drops. One of which was the Cheaters lament drop.
Totally fixed system Valve, good job making it fairer for people like me.

I don't even use achievement_idle, I just idle in official koth_ maps.

Valve has repeatedly stated in blog posts that their current system intends to correlate item rewards with playing time. People who play more will be rewarded with more items; this is and has always been a core fundamental of their item system.
The drop system is a delicate balancing act. If the cap limits and drop frequencies are raised, then the arbitrary "rarity" value of drops is severely lowered. If everyone was finding hats and weapons constantly, how valuable and special would the items feel? If people were satisfied with their full backpacks and pimped-out class loadouts, what would keep them playing the game? Valve has a major stake in maximizing TF2 playtime and long-term profit.

If you're being serious, think about how inefficient this would be. Valve's TF2 updates rarely single out unofficial content, no matter how popular it may be (the near-universal SourceOP plugin has never been mentioned in TF2 update notes even when certain updates were specifically added to benefit the plugin or fix compatibility). Valve maintains an air of professionalism by carefully avoiding the mention of unofficial content - this line has been crossed with the careful importing of the wiki and the rare sanction of community maps, but specifically targeting achievement_idle will not ever happen as long as TF2 is alive.
Besides, it'd be like crushing a beehive without killing any of the bees. Idlers will just move.
One way I see to fix it is to force mp_idledealmethod to 1, even in the training mode. Then You can't really idle.

That is a terrible idea. Do not take freedom away from server owners in the name of defeating idlers. Idlers aren't even a problem anymore; it's all an illusion. I'm playing only an hour or two each day and I'm getting just as many items as any idler. Even if you do "need to idle" in order to catch up on items you missed during the week, idling time is minimal. You only ever need to idle a couple or a few hours, which is nothing compared to people idling all day every day before.
The problem is eliminated and idlers are NOT rewarded more than regular players. Stop comaplining about the system and just play the game. If you can't play as often as required to get enough items, then you just won't get as many items. As smallfry said, the point of the system is to reward playtime; if you aren't going to play TF2, then you aren't going to get items. It's that simple.
just ban those who seed idle servers, they're bound to learn eventually. Also those too who seed saigns
week drop cap needs to increase greatly, when update was up, in 3 days i hit the cap without idle, that was less than 5 items..
i think they should remove the drop cap permanently.
The whole point of the cap is to ensure that idlers don't get any more items than those who play normally. Don't complain about the cap and idlers in the same breath, it makes you look like a fool.
I don't care about idlers, just give me more than 7-8 items a week
Also, valve should implement dayly caps or decrease the drop rate after many hours of continous play

There is nothing about idling to be ban worthy. All it is is running the game while you go do other things.

Some of us have no life and tend to play hours on end.
I don't exactly understand why people hate idlers so much.
I'm so tired of this bitching about idlers.
I idle sometimes because I work alot and I'm not about to miss out on items because of my job.
If you don't get as many items as the next person, tough shit. I've gotten screwed so many times with regards to getting drops. Not everything is fair. If you really want items, just hop into an idle server and leave. If you can't do that, then shut up. Because if you really don't get a ton of time to play the game, what the fuck do you want Valve to do? Seriously. What, do you want Valve to create a totally new drop/cap system for....short time players? Everyone plays a different amount of time. Valve can't cater to everyone. Can't stand people that complain about idlers. Just because you suffer doesn't mean I have to suffer. You get what you put into it.

I don't hate idlers
Also I play TF2 like 4-6 hours on weekends
I wish valve deletes the weekly cap,but with all the whinny people It's imposible
People who use idle servers are dumb anyway, because you can idle in offline practice mode and still get items. Some say you even get a few more items in offline practice than you do in online games only (not sure if it's true)

If they raise the cap, people will complain that idlers are getting more than they are. If they lower the cap, then people will complain that they're getting less items. It's a lose/lose for Valve either way with the ridiculously whiny community they have.
What they have right now is, at least in my opinion, the safest middleground. We get enough items, and that's just fine. If you want more, there's always the Mann Co. Store and trading. I know you're about to go "yeah right, buying items, that's a laugh," but hey - the option is there. I'm just laying it out for you. If you utilize trading, you can easily increase your inventory by obtaining valuable items and using them as leverage in trades. My hat count has increased from somewhere around 20 to nearly 30 since trading and I know others who have nearly every hat in the game now due to taking advantage of the "hat economy". (Lookin' at you, Drunk Demoman. :v:)

but iam pretty sure, a normal player that dont idle, still getting less items on current drop system, than older one.
