Am i the only person who thinks that Valve has gone overboard with the customizability?
At first it was great. There were hats that suited the classes nicely. They were subtle yet unique. Then they started adding more and more ~~XD RaNdOM~~ hats to please their shitty fanbase (all the children in the SPUF, etc). I could tolerate there being some dopey retarded looking hats because you can customize which ones are visible using the items_game.txt file.
But now they've made it so players can color their hats and make complete abominations of them. Bright pink ushankas, purple fireman hats, etc. They look like garbage and it staggers the mind that people actually think they look cool wearing them.
And now there are hats with stupid particle effects attached to them, because TF2 apparently isn't complex enough with all these new weapons and things that use particle effects as visual cues.
I mean, i can hardly tell if a soldier is using the buff banner or the battle backup because the effects are the same. The new milk effect isn't very noticeable from a distance since it doesn't paint a color over the player, it's just a few white particles.
I'm tired of being a medic and thinking a player is bleeding and in nedd of help because he has these small red particles popping out of his head. They are just distracting and annoying. They don't in any way fit the game (duh) and they're basically just a way for people to be smug and act as if they're cool because they paid $2.50 for a key to a crate.
The sad part is i doubt valve will add a convar for us to enable/disable hat paint/effects since this feature is making them a TON of money. Can't they just give the players an option to enable or disable the dopey looking visual shit they've cluttered the game with?
You're taking Team Fortress 2 too seriously. It's not meant to be taken seriously, at all.
If people are enjoying their hat why would you do something to stop them from having fun? And how on earth are you getting these effects mixed up?
I don't play seriously, but i honestly just want to go back to the glory days when everything fit the atmosphere. Now it's just a contest to try and look the most obnoxious.
Hey look at that heavy! Oh my god he has earbuds and a pink ushanka with confetti falling out! That's just silly! So silly that i'm going to make the :xd: face and put a shoe on my head!
Remember back when valve made those rigorous blog posts about how they spent so much time working on silhouettes and color palettes and visual cues? Did Robin just say "FUCK IT ALL" one day and toss out all that work? Sure as shit seems that way.
The game's meant to be silly.

Are you the guy who sits in the corner while everyone else does the Soulja boy dance and enjoys themselves because you think its stupid?
camera beard + flies = the best hat in existence
The game's meant to be silly.
It's not silly. It's stupid and ugly, purely an aesthetic visual gimmick.
There's a genuine difference between the two.
I mean i guess some children out there get a few laughs out of a spy wearing a purple fedora because they're still in that stage where they laugh at people who wear purple things but damn.
You yourself just stated in your previous post that it's silly.
The hats remind me of the stupid perks people get when they donate to a server
I can take people coloring their hats and even the Dr. Seuss hat I can take but whenever I see a glowy effect on someone it just reminds me of all those bad times Id join a server with stupid donater perks
Yes, because i was doing an impression of you people, the general community, who genuinely think that it's silly and not just hideous and gimmicky.
The logical thing for valve to do is add a convar so that both sides of the fence can be happy on this issue. Obviously there are some people who find custom painted hats to be the epitome of Epic Win. But there are also people out there who see that it's just a bastardization of a once decent visual perk.
I agree with BirdBro on hats/paint. I want a vanilla mode for TF2 and I'd probably start playing again. No hats, no new weapons, nothing but the original weapons.

The time before all these new weapons was when I had the most fun playing this game. :saddowns:
I like how you said, "You people", as if you aren't part of the community.
camera beard + flies = the best hat in existence
no sorry that's ze goggles + ghosts
Well i'm implying that the community is segregated into 2 groups: The ones that think all these new visual gimmicks look cool, and the ones who enjoyed the look and feel of Old TF2.
I enjoy both the old and the new TF2.
Then i'm sure you can respect the fact that some people abhor the new customization shit that valve has added.
I think it started going downhill after the scout update.
I wish the unusuals would be different somehow instead of particle effects.
Like they could have a completely different skin or something.
I feel sorry for the community contributors with community items, I heard they were broken in the update. Not to mention it's also hard to see their effect.
I think it started going downhill after the scout update.
I think it started going downhill when Valve started updating faster than every 5-9 months. Back then we were very excited over only 3 weapons and a map.
It's not silly. It's stupid and ugly, purely an aesthetic visual gimmick.
Eh, I'm honestly not seeing it. It all looks fine to me.
You're honestly saying that you think bright pink ushankas and green fedoras and hats with gigantic sunrays popping out and all that shit looks good?
It's an eyesore.
I will admit there are some cool things paint can do though.
Black paint + stuntman = a cool looking demoman hat
Orange paint + respite = team zissou hat, and it actually looks decent on the pyro
There are a couple others that look decent. But for every good paint job there are 100 more ugly as fuck combinations.
I can't agree more with you.
There is a difference between a game being silly and a game being silly and looking God damn awful.
Oh stop your bitching. If a jar of piss can make it into the game then why cant strange hats?
As dopey as the idea behind jarate is, it's a cool weapon which actually fits the game well. I'll admit it looks strange but it has a cool gameplay mechanic to it.
There are 2 kinds of silly that Valve has been using. They have the subtle humor and relationships between classes that you begin to notice from the taunts and "meet the" videos. Shit like this is good.
Then there's the "wacky random" silly that they've started introducing more and more with their hats. I have a huge hunch they do this because a big chunk of the people who play their game are socially under-developed teens who eat it all up. It's a smart marketing strategy but at the cost of the visual trademarks that made TF2 what it was... I dunno.

Yeah.
Cool, i didn't know blind people could play tf2. god bless.
I do kind of wish Community items were never implemented.

Yes. It's impossible for me to have an opinion differing from yours. The only way I could think differently from you is if I'm blind.
Hey, I'm blind.
Why do you think I wear such dark shades?
Well it's similar to a guy walking up to you in real life with bright pink pants and a bright yellow tophat and asking if he looks good.
No, it doesn't look good. No matter how funny the situation is, it's just an ugly combination of colors. Doesn't take Hugo Boss himself to explain that.
