Last time I recall playing TF2 it was a team-based game. Now all I'm hearing about are hats, paints and god knows what other stupid shit. (User was banned for this post ("Not a good thread." - Jimbomcb))
Fixing, breaking, fixing, breaking, fixing, breaking entire game
If Valve didn't added the hats, TF2 wouldn't be the same game for some people.Even tough i don't really care about hats, they still are important in some way.

Valve went overboard with hats/cosmetic items. However the new weapons (mostly) bring new gameplay elements.
First-person hat simulator game
They added a lot of cosmetic, buyable shit to please the mentally handicapped 12-year-olds in the Steam Forums.

The first updates were all three new weapons for one class, with a couple of maps and sometimes a new gamemode. These weapons were usually pretty simple, yet offered a new playstyle. Pyro update, airblast was implemented to balance out the backburner's large amount of health and 100% crits from behind. With the Spy/Sniper update, hats and the drop system was introduced. The drop system was made to allow new players to get weapons without having to always wait for achievements. Hats were cosmetic items that didn't have any effect on gameplay. More official hats were added. People's obsession with hats increased, drop system was changed since nobody liked not being able to get weapons from milestones. Demoman/Soldier update, more weapons were included. Some weapons that were extremely out of character, and one melee weapon that was widely considered a straight upgrade rather than a sidegrade. People now also idle like crazy to get hats. Community hats and weapons implemented, people start submitting new items for TF2 made by the community. Community hat pack implemented, many hats that were very out of character, yet liked by the community. People still idle like crazy. Community contribution site implemented, where people can submit things they've made for TF2 that Valve might implement if they like it. 119 update, huge nerf to Pyro's flamethrower damage and a buff to the airblast due to W+M1 complaints. A cap was now implemented on the amount of items you can get per week, to stop people from idling. Engineer update, a huge chaos over an extremely rare Golden wrench only given to 100 users. A lot of people rage over the update and how trading still haven't been implemented, but the weapons were pretty decent. Aside from the Wrangler, who was widely considered an upgrade. Polycount update, trading implemented, micro-transactions implemented, a bunch of hats, new weapons, paintable and namable hats, very rare unusual hats with cosmetic effects, set hats that gives attributes rather than just remaining cosmetic.

Lots of hats and weapons. Server crashing. People scamming and being blocked for it. People bitching about shit. Fixes and bugs.
TF2 is the best war themed hat simulator around, they even added customization to your hats now. Whats not to like?
