• Aiming with Pipes

There's a reason that most demos use stickies as their primary: Pipes aren't reliable in a crunch, at least for me. Do any of you still have trouble aiming this thing? Besides point-blank kills, I have moderate trouble when it comes to mid-range fighting, and I am wondering if I'm alone. Some people say they're easier to aim because they move faster than rockets, but personally I have to treat each grenade like a huntsman arrow when trying to hit. Also, the off-to-the-right-of-the-crosshair aim of the nades bugs me too. In all of my 20 hours of demoman, the only thing I've learned really is not to hold M1 when being attacked. I've been screwed by scouts enough for doing that... Tips, or anything to note about this?
I get huge kill streaks with pipes. I've liked them better than stickies since beta. No tips I can really offer except: go out and use them, get experience, and trust your feelings, young Skywalker. Half the time shooting in the general area where you expect them to be shortly results in kills.
Stand still, time your shots. Most people move in a straight path or a pattern. Aim a bit to the left.
It just takes a lot of practice really. The best advice I can give is to take your time firing them off. Instead of spamming out all 4 then being SoL, carefully aim each one. They do a ton of damage on a direct hit, so even if you're being shot at while you're aiming, you'll almost always be better to aim and go for direct hits. Also, keep in mind the Grenade Launcher is by no means really meant to be a long range weapon. It's pretty much a solid medium-range shooter. The only time (in my experience at least) it's good for long range is if there are many enemies pidgeon-holed in a corner. In that case, I just take a bunch of pot shots in their general direction, hoping to kill some, or at the very least, injure them.
Aim a bit to the left.
I usually overcompensate, as knowing I'm not shooting straight changes my mental image of where my pipe is flying. Also, what should I do if I get 1 hit in but have an empty clip? Reload one pipe and shoot? Or melee/sticky launcher?
I have never had any trouble with pipes, I suggest learning how far you need to lead your shots for each class's move speed, people generally try to strafe left and right when you fire pipes at them. Also move in the same direction as your target, use his movement compared to you rather than the floor when taking aim. [editline]05:14PM[/editline] Only reload if you think it will only take 1 more pipe to finsh them off, and if you have the reg sticky and no sticky trap, use that instead. If you have the targe, melee if your within range, if you just have the eyelander, melee if your in cqc, if you have the bottle, find cover and reload.
I don't play demoman, but when i do. SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM. Pipes work pretty well that way but direct hits with them are pretty good too. That's the problem with demoman, is good in every role. Attack(instant detonation sticky) Defense(sticky trap) Spam(pipes) Surprised in spam, just pipe their ass(pipes) Assault(sticky jump) etc
Play soldier, that will get you good at prediction easiest. Then switch to direct hit to further that, then go for pipes. The direct hit is pretty much a strait line pipe. You have to just gradually get used to it. The thing you have to remember is that you are not a fighting class. You are more of a support/defense. If you wanna attack, you have to get people in your danger zone, which is like having a deaf sniper with a full team of spies. You become useless.
When the sword and board dropped, I learned to use pipes properly. When I stopped playing tf2 for a month, my proficiency with demo waned. It's a sad, sad thing. :saddowns:
In my own opinion, I think I'm pretty good with the pipe bombs. I've sticky jumped to the top of watertower and killed people running on the pipes that go to the tower with direct hits of the pipe bombs. Demomen who only use stickies make me rage very hard for some reason.

I always fluke my shots.
With my 95 hours of demo man, I've gotten used to being defeated by scouts. Even if you do DIRECTLY hit a scout, he loses 105 HP and isn't an instant kill (as I think it should be). I've gotten used to placing stickies about 10 seconds away from where the scout is, directly hit him with my pipe bomb, and then blowing it up when he unwillingly strafes into it.
No tips I can really offer except: go out and use them, get experience, and trust your feelings, young Skywalker.
This is essentially the best advice. Learning to use pipes properly requires a lot of practice - and effective prediction. It took me a week of binge Demo-playing to learn to use pipe bombs well.
I only use them when I'm out of ammo/saving stickies for the SL, not laggin and in a good mood, actually.
Stand still
Thats the worst thing to do in TF2. Unless you're safely in a friendly base with teammates to take some bullets for you.
I hated playing demo since the beta, but just recently I've started loving it. Why? I've stopped trying to be like all the other sticky whores out there and have spent time practicing with the pipe bomb launcher. It's so much more satisfying getting pipe kills than it is with stickies.
I'm horrible at landing direct hits, it always an inch off to the left or right of where I want it to land. But recently, I've downloaded airshot training maps to practice getting direct hits with. Its slowly working, I can land 1 out of every 3 shots I make haha. (And that's not saying much.)

The heavy buff fucked my pipe and huntsman aim all up. Hell, using pipes a lot fucks my huntsman's aim up.
Pipes are incredible when used correctly.
I tend to spam a bit with the pipes, though it's usually because there's a crowd of enemies gathering in a spot and that's an easy target. I love stickies more, can be fun defending a point and the other team isn't watching where they are going.
Use the targe, you'll get more practice with them that way. My aim is incredible with them now.
I am quite interested in learning pill fighting myself, mainly why I have located a very convenient DM server on which very good players practice regularly (not only demomen)
Hahahaha :v::v: Just practice, what would you think
I can share the IP with you if you are interested, when it comes back online.
Demo needs a Facelauncher where the grenades are round and fire out of the centre of the screen. Maybe.
Three pipes can take down a heavy fresh out of spawn when you aim them correctly. Essentially, aim where your enemy is going to be - attempt to make your enemy run into them (if you've ever played Unreal Tournament, treat it like the bio-rifle - you want them to step on the gunge, instead of aiming it at them) if they are too fast (like a scout).
ITT: bad people thinking they are good.
