It seems as if whenever I join a server, I get kicked due to having my own custom models/skins. I think this is stupid, because this has happened two times on my favorite servers. I don't see what the big deal of having custom skins or models (if they're harmless). Is this happening to anyone else?
Rarely do I find a pure server that kicks me because of my models/skins. Some servers, however, take precaution because custom sounds and skins can be used to "cheat", such as louder spy cloaking noises, or making characters more noticeable.
Because you skins are muddling up their ultra pro, serious business TF2.
Hell, if a pure server kicked me I'd thank them for saving me the effort of leaving, and then blacklist them like I do to all pure servers.
It's reasonable. People could reskin all classes a bright color so that they show up in all enviornment, change the spy decloak noise to something reasonable, or reskin textures to they're wire framed.
Oh no! pure servers are actually doing what their tag says!

And how would the server know that your CUSTOM files are harmless and aren't "see-through-walls", high volume footsteps and uncloaking noises, exaggerated cloaking smoke, etc etc.
Now as for the server kicking you, this happens when you previously connected to a server that allowed you to load custom models.
You have to restart TF2 to clear those pre-loaded custom things.
It sucks though, some servers force the custom content onto you, and then you can't join a sv_pure server unless you restart TF2.
EDIT: I was gonna say exactly what Beef said.
I believe this is actually a server cvar that tells it to kick people for having items on the sv_pure whitelist. I forgot exactly what the command was.

You're right and you're wrong.
sv_pure_kick_clients
It is set to "1" by default because if it's set to "0", it basically removes the purpose of sv_pure, as it would only issue a warning instead of kicking.
So, you're wrong to think it's because of that command and not because of sv_pure, there is no alternative.

Pure servers never tag themselves, that's what pisses me off.

Wait pure servers never kick they just force you to revert to the original models.

Yeah, fuck you skins!

edit - I was wrong, while sv_pure_kick_clients is ON by default, which is retarded, setting it to 0 will actually force clients to reload default stuff
To use pure server mode on a server, set the sv_pure console variable to 1 or 2. Then, on the next map change, the server will ensure that the content (materials, models, and sounds) on client machines matches what is specified.
By default, the server will kick clients whose custom content varies from that the server is using. By setting sv_pure_kick_clients to 0, the server will only display a warning about clients using this kind of "impure" custom content. The server can force the client to use content provided by the game, and will never kick players who have only modded default content, like custom skins or models.
Oh okay, I get it now. So if the server has some custom shit and you have differing custom shit in place of their custom shit, it kicks you?

Yes, by default, because sv_pure_kick_clients is set to 1 by default.
But if you set it to 0, it will force clients to reload the files from the GCF packs.
I've never been kicked, I guess most servers manually change it to 0.

I'm some how able to connect to pure tf2 servers after joining a non-pure without getting kicked. But my models no longer load on non-pures so I've had to dump my materials folder.
Funny how some people first complain about the lack of sv_pure 0 servers, and when they find some they complain about all the mathackers
It's reasonable. People could reskin all classes a bright color so that they show up in all enviornment,
The classes are meant to be highly visible anyway. Didn't you listen to the developer commentary?

They're meant to be highly recognizeable, not highly visible.
A bright fluo sniper's head peeking in a far away window is much easier to notice.
There are people who reskin stuff to make it stand out. These reskins are known as "chams", short for "chameleon hacks". Some people use programming knowledge to create plugins that, instead of replacing the material, force the game to render the models in such a way - the latter kind is undetectable by sv_pure. Be wary.
sv_pure isn't bad, it's just annoying to have wireframes and purple-black squares in place of your fancy Spy skin.
I just stay away from servers using it, as it hampers my enjoyment.

And from there people get into wallhacks/model-overlay\replacement. Then we move on to ESP, and then finally Aimbot.
Yay progression of cheating :D

isn't that the general point of sv_pure.
Even then, how many people do you play with who actually cheat?
It's not like hacking's a massive, gamebreaking problem
