• Server Info Screen Overlayed Over Game

My friend finally downloaded TF2, and, after fixing problems with his graphics card drivers, was met with this problem: He cannot close the overlayed section, (tried pressing Enter and Escape) his mouse is displayed but there is nothing to click on, the overlay works, he cannot move/look around because he hasn't yet chosen his class. We have tried multiple servers. We tried changing his resolution. Has anyone had this before? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Try hud_reloadscheme in console once he's stuck.
I assume from the looks of it he's using a custom HUD?
Try hud_reloadscheme in console once he's stuck.
I've told him to try this now, will update when I get a reply.
I assume from the looks of it he's using a custom HUD?
Nope, he is completely new to the game, not even nearly ready to start modding/customising it. That is the server info panel thing on the left. (The thing that comes up when you join a server)
You occasionally get that if you alt-tab out of the game before you connect to the server.
I've seen some fucked up MOTD custom pages loading while joining a new server. Even connected to a shitty server that ran a cookie stuffing script. Retarded MOTDs... Not to mention the common youtube videos loading instead of a motd page for a clan/server website or something...
iirc, switching to minimal HUD in the options menu fixed that. I only ever saw it when an update broke a custom HUD (read: I was too lazy to update it) though.

I connected to the server and it worked fine though. He also gets this on every server. (Single player practice mode works fine for him) Everyone else, I've passed on your suggestions. Thanks tons. I have no idea why he isn't responding to me at the moment, he was pretty desperate to play earlier, but I'll post an update once he has responded. It seems the main cause of this would be a custom HUD, but he definitely hasn't installed one. I know the general rule is, "if in doubt, verify cache," but he has really, really bad internet (~4kbps, took him ages to actually download TF2) so I would prefer to avoid this if at all possible. Once again, thanks!

You'll just be running around playing, suddenly BAM the MOTD comes back up and you get killed by the distraction. I've added every server of theirs I can find to my blacklist. I refuse to ever play on their servers ever again because of this and I urge everyone here to do the same. And if anyone from PROTF2.com sees this and think they're going to jump in here and white knight for their website? Shut up. There is no excuse for mid-game popup advertisements, none, not one single excuse. GTFO.
I swear there's an option to disable the MOTD functionality. That or it's just fucked for me. Either way I enjoy the state of affairs.
You can disable HTML MOTDs, so you only get plaintext ones like the default map rotation list. Handy for turning ones that play ads or whatever into a big blank box :v:
