• Will changing the Team Fortress 2 icon in hl2.exe get me VAC banned?

I was just wondering this; I hate the tf2 icon, and want to change it to match my superbar. I'm really just asking this because someone said that it could get you VAC banned for tampering with an .exe, and I just want to clear this up.
Anything that directly touches the executables (EXE/DLL) can VAC ban you
You can change the icon to whatever icon you like, as long as you know where the other icon is located. It will not modify any HL2.EXE / DLLs, it will only modify the shortcut link.
I was able to change the icon of Gmod in the taskbar, but that was under Windows XP. I think I had placed an .ico file somewhere in the game's "resource" folder
Exactly. I did this to make my own Neotokyo icon and I didn't get VAC banned, although that was a third-party mod.

Can't you just make a shortcut and then change the icon? Also, changing the icon wouldn't really change the actual game so why not?
I dont really want to pin the shortcut though.. But if that's the only way.. :sigh:
The .ico file in the resource folder is locked - even if you replace it, it will revive itself and knock the replacement out. If it wasn't locked, you could replace it and not get VAC banned since it acts like custom content.

In case OP doesn't understand what to do... Look in Steam -> steam -> games for all the icons you want. Copy the respective one to team fortress 2 -> tf -> resource and rename it to game.ico. Right click, properties, check Read Only. Now you should have nice pretty icons. You can do this for any Source game (some go in gamename -> hl2 -> resource, like Garry's Mod).
Thank you Mr. Saturn!
I helped too. :frown:
