So around a year ago I came around Facepunch looking for volunteers for the Engineer Apostles. I said I was making an Engineer Bible.
This is the original megathread.
We don't claim to be the best, we just claim to know what the hell we're doing.
The Engineer Bible is exactly what it's name sounds like. It's a guide to the Engineer Class in TF2, covering everything from the very basics to offensive and defensive engineering, class matchups, weapons tips, and sentry jumping.
The guide came into being about a year ago when Problem founded the Engineer Apostles with several other notable Engineers in the TF2 community, including Gamemaster, and Shallow (aka notvlog). The Engineer Apostles are meant to be an ongoing community of Engineers that aim to educate the TF2 Community about playing the Engineer class through videos and tutorials.
Over time, the group accumulated a large number of tips and footage from several different Engineers in the community. A year later, the guide has finally been finished. The Engineer Apostles proudly present the Engineer Bible. We hope you enjoy it.

I could spend a lot of time sitting here explaining why it took a year to finally create, but I'm fucking tired. So here it is. It's done.
Enjoy, Facepunch. My final gift to TF2.
why does it have to be 4 am when I find this? I'll watch it in the morning.
Finally this is done. Can't wait to watch it when I get home.
Yaaay, it's finished
The ultimate guide to Engie, This is amazing!
I'm still at the beginning of the video, but I notice you don't have hud_combattext_batching set to 1.
This setting adds on-screen hit numbers to one when they appear too fast, i.e. it takes away the tiny nines and eights when you wrangle a minisentry and gradually adds them to one big number (like 54, 63 etc.)
Excellent for automatic weapons like smg, flamethrower, minigun and sentry.
my tears
my precious manly tears
About fighting Spy and then unsapping your stuff section. You can just whack the sapper once, shoot the spy and then unsap it. The Spy can't repair their sappers.
Yes, it confuses the hell of out of spies.
They hear bleeping when their sappers get damaged, similar to engineers' buildings. To the more skilled spies, this is a signal. Go and stab the guy.
Just wrench it once, turn around and crit their face.
[editline]10th December 2012[/editline]
Also, keep in mind buildings take full damage from any range. If a sentry gets hit by a direct hit rocket from across the map, it will take the same damage as if the soldier shot it from point blank.
Thanks for all the comments guys. This really, really means a lot. I'm extremely glad to have finished it, but more importantly, I'm glad to have had your support. I hope you guys enjoy it!
Oh, and do me a small favor and share the link with your pals. Thanks!

It's from quite a recent patch, halloween I believe?

I'll have to add that in!
Also, the main video description has been updated so that you can skip to each of the songs from the soundtrack. Someone requested it on YT and I couldn't say no.
I think you should've explained why the Short Circuit is good at Payload, offense specifically. It negates any source of splash damage, stopping the enemy from damaging more than 1 person at a time, and juggling them away from the cart, making pushes much easier. Also, if you or one of your teammates sits on top of the cart, they'll become an easy target for Snipers, but, with the Short Circuit, you can stop Huntsman arrows from reaching them.
Either way, this is a great guide, and it inspired me to play Engi more often! Thanks for making it!

The trouble with the Short Circuit is that it's a very tricky weapon. We're certainly capable of using it, but what we didn't want to do was say "Use the Short Circuit, it's a fantastic secondary" and then have a wave of noobier and F2P Engineers, who, with the best intentions, spamming the Short Circuit all over the place.
While we feel that the Short Circuit is a very useful weapon for the niches it fits in, we also wanted to emphasize that it is inherently a NICHE weapon. We felt that we showed how to use it well enough for players to figure out when to use it on their own.
We may eventually expand on the Short Circuit in a later video, along with any other weapons that are released after this video, or just weapons and strategies that pique our interest.
Hell, the whole point of this group is for Engineers from the community to teach what they like. You're completely welcome to join the group, ask for the YouTube channel info, and throw a video up on the subject yourself. I invite you to. I wish more people would, honestly.
Holy shit a 50 minute video on how to get better at one of my favourite classes? Count me the fuck in!
Thanks a ton guys!
That was a fantastic video. Well done dude!
you know, I think my favorite thing about this is checking the youtube page and seeing the 30+ videos about religion and Christianity in the "related videos" section :v:
Great video and all but what's the map that has the rocket on the moving train?
Great video and all but what's the map that has the rocket on the moving train?
ctf_convoy_*and then something I forgot about*
Im sure you can find it by searching for ctf_convoy,
unless im mistaken that is.
not quite sure why you recommend against scripts for sentry dropping
press mm watch minisentry pop up instantly, seems like a good deal to me
Edit: not like it takes away my ability to do it normally if I need to rotate it either

it's just ctf_convoy
there's a ctf_convoy_v2 but that has jump pads and in general is pretty lamesauce
also I recommend against scripts, because getting good at navigating the menus with just your fingers means you can quickly change to dropping teleporters, dispensers, etc. in general it's just a good skill to have memorized, and it isn't that difficult. none of the sentry drops in the video used scripts. the rocket hauling did use a small one though.
Watched the entire thing. Great job in production, and information, I usually main engy.
There's only one thing I feel that should be mentioned, but its extremely rare that it works, or that it occurs, but I try to do it as much as I can as I love using the Quick-Fix.
The Quick-Fix isn't made to destroy engy nests or take out people: its meant to say "Fuck you I'm coming in anyway" and complete the objective in the face of a sentry gun.
Example:

The scout and I just waltz in (granted there were no level 3 with rockets) and take the intel while undergoing fire from multiple sentries and other classes. While there's not much to do for an engineer in this case except body block, this method can easily cap points or push carts while taking heavy fire, and then the engineers have to stand on the point to prevent a cap.
I'm the only one I know who has done this though, I've personally never come across another player doing it.

I was honestly a bit reluctant to cover the quick fix. We barely had footage on it, and it's so rarely used that it's hard to formulate strategies around it's use, but I felt like something had to be said. That's an awesome strategy.
Honestly I think I'd use the Quick Fix a lot more if I played with more competent players than just the regular spammomen and trolldiers, but I never run into them except in situations where they would probably like to have an Uber or Kritz instead.
Why is it "not recommended" to use scripts to lay down sentries? the best thing i ever did for combat engies was to bind build_sentry for quick deployment and destroy_sentry for the instant frontier justice crits.

I love using the quickfix, but it only truly shines when you have a good soldier or scout that will cover you. And you get ubers ALL THE TIME with the thing as your patient usually soaks up a lot of damage.
I've yet to do this, but the knockback immunity prevents sentries from pushing jumping soldiers/medics, which can easily cap tall points like gravelpit, OR getting behind a sentry and killing the engineer.
Its one of my favorite weapons and I really wish people would learn how to utilize it.
I understand why you don't recommend quick-build scripts, but quick-destroy scripts are really good IMO, since when I want to destroy my Sentry, I know I'm about to get into a battle, if I'm not already in one, and the script doesn't really translate to other buildings, since I seldom want to destroy my Dispenser or Teleporters.

Huh. I thought the purpose of the QF's übercharge was to ensure the survival of a whole group of allies during a push. Instead of boosting one or two people with crits/invulnerability while the rest of your team follows and tries to fend for themselves, you switch rapidly back and forth between all of them to prevent them from dying, trusting that their collective health/firepower ends up as useful as the lone critboost/invuln would have been.
Then again I've pretty much never used the QF.

Also, if I'm playing with a fairly mediocre team that is constantly getting damaged across the board, I will use QF to help entire team. Much more useful than giving one poor soldier an uber and wasting it.
Fantastic guide. I'm going to use those motivational words from end.
Kudos to you KnowingProblem and kudos to those who helped in making that guide. Words are not enough to express how amazing it is.
That's just, wow. ;-;
