My TF2 has recently decided to not work, and now crashes left and right. Sometimes it will take me 2 or 3 times to get it to load because it will crash on startup, with the error HL2. EXE has stopped working. Now it's in game. I can't play for more than 5 minutes usually without a crash. I just tried to play, and all the characters spawned with no heads. It was amazingly funny, but I crashed out. It used to just be on map change too. Anyway to fix this? Thanks.
So, any computer specs? Have you tried validating your cache files or renaming your tf folder?
i5 750, stock clock 4 gigs of ram 2 5850's Windows 7 HP 64 bit And ugh, how would renaming my TF folder help sir?
It will make a fresh install of the game. And you still have all your extra content in the case that it isn't the problem.
Did not fix. Crashed on startup after doing this. I'm trying to defrag my GCF's with GCFscape, but I need the HLLib.zip that is only hosted on a site that is down at the moment. Anyone got it and willing to upload it?
Whoops, team fortress 2 folder, not tf folder. It isn't so much about what would specifically help, more what would get it as close to a fresh install again to eliminate whatever random configs or stuff you have installed for it. Since the error is "it crashes" there isn't a lot to go on. Nothing wrong with those specs, so I'd just continue on with the standard troubleshooting. Eg. making sure there are as few background processes as possible, disable antivirus, potentially reset your tf2 settings (after backing up your cfg directory) with SourceTools, things like that. If client.dll is fault module you can try this, so far it's been working for me: Thank you for contacting Steam Support. The following has solved this problem for some Vista & Windows 7 users: Exit Steam. In Windows, click on the Start/Windows button > All Programs > Accessories Launch the Command Prompt by right clicking on it and choosing "Run As Administrator" Type in the following command and press enter: net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service Then, type in this command and press enter: net localgroup Administrators NetworkService /ADD Close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer. Then, launch the game again. Please let us know if you have further questions.
