Do you need to join a server to get the earbuds, or just log in on an account?
I'm helping people out on a forum I go to and need to know so I can save time.

Nope. For the Earbuds to go into you backpack all you have to do is launch the game. You can do the server joining or dying on a PC. I know this 100%.

that must've been what happened for me. i got a friend to log me in on a mac and when i logged in on my pc i didn't have an icon in my bags, but i had the item in the misc slot. i found it when i died though.
