Hello all,
Recently, a problem has started on my computer. Whenever I Start Team Fortress 2 (Or Gmod for that matter) Steam refuses to start the game, and forces me to wait through a 15-20 minute 'Validating steam cache files'. This is been happening to me for a few weeks now, and it's really getting on my nerves. I have googled this problem, and all the threads reguarding this either have no fixes, or do not work. I do in fact, have noticed that a lot of people are having this issue. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this, or at least give me an update as to what is going on here?
What I've tried: (In order of desperation)
-Trying to let it validate. Keeps happening.
-Restarting steam
-Restarting comp
-Delete clientregistry.blob
-Defragment tf2 files and all that jazz in the properties menu.
-Defragment my disk.
-Reinstall tf2
-Reinstall steam
If anyone can answer this, I would be very appriciative! Thank you!
My guess is that it isn't TF2, but other games. Check to see if any game has a yellow "downloading" thing when it validates. That game could be the problem.
That isnt it. No other of my games are downloading.

Help
I've had this problem 10000 times.
THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR THIS IS - Simply re-install TF2. There's no other way to fix this. I've had this problem thousands of times and this is the only way to fix it. If you have any skins/mods you wanna keep or maps, just make a copy of the folders called materials, models and maps under team fortress 2\tf and place them there again after re-installing.
I assume you haven't tried step 3 in this Steam Support article about it?
did you even read the OP
If you uninstall TF2 via Steam it won't delete all local files.
OP, try this:
1. Uninstall TF2 (via Steam)
2. Go to ../steam/steamapps/<account name>/ and delete the entire team fortress 2 folder
3. Disable Steam Cloud for Team Fortress 2
3. Re-install TF2
I have this problem myself
checked over stuff with GCFscape and one of the
TF2 gcfs would throw a bunch of errors when verified.
deleted the misbehaving one and steam redownloaded it
and then like three updates later it started again :v
know you said redownloading didn't fix
but wanted to share in case it might help somehow
I am redownloading via deleting TF folder now

Well it turns out i had about 45 .gcf files just sitting in the team fortress 2 folder, and they were in use, even though tf wasnt running. I have a problem with ghost processes, after I close TF, hl2.exe continues to run, and when I try and end the process via task manager it says Access Denied. I hope this fixes it.
I had this problem for a while, I just manually verified and haven't had any problems since.

You'd think that verifying the game would be the first thing to do when the game wants to be verified. v:v:v

Manually from the game properties, if you verify when the game starts it continues to have this issue.

Is it confirmed that this works; I dont want to have to reinstall TF2 and my skins for nothing
I had it too,
For me it works to manually close steam before shutting down your pc. Asked some other people to do the same that had the trouble too, worked for them too so you might want to try that
Thanks. Problem solved.
so, for the sake of future google searchs, what did fix it in the end?

Deleting every file on TF folder and re-installing.
If not, that works too :v:
none of that works for me either :/
I've had this problem for a long while now. I've reinstalled Windows since (fresh reinstall on a new SSD RAID) and the problem still occurred but I used the same GCFs instead of re-downloading them. Be nice to just delete all the TF2 and any other shared GCFs it uses and re-download them all but my Internet connection is too limited and there's the risk it'll just happen again.
I had this problem for a while, and all I did was manually verify the game cache instead of letting it be done when the game starts, and it fixed itself.
