Let me begin by saying this: crafting is going to be big. Everyone right now is unsure of what crafting is going to introduce now or even in the future, but the Team Fortress 2 team did not work on this system just so the poor and Irish could craft hats.
In fact, I think hat crafting was just a side benefit of this system, and very rarely will we craft hats. If the goal of the crafting system was to increase the amount of hats players had, then they would of just upped the hat drop rates. And that begs the question of why we have a crafting system now. Two words: random stat weapons.
We've known for a long time that Valve has been experimenting with random stat weapons, and like it or not they are coming. Random stat weapons will give the crafting system and the trading system a purpose aside from the frivolous hats players so desperately crave. Random stat weapons will also enhance the random drop system; so now finding an weapon through the random drop system actually worth a damn.
The crafting system will be constantly evolving, with new variables, weapons, and even hats that can only be discovered through this system. While some will see it as the death of Team Fortress, one thing is for certain: this game is going to change dramatically. I highly doubt this is going to break the game, but I know that this will be looked upon as the most controversial update in TF2's history.
So to those who are trying to deny the coming of random stat weapons: tell me why we need a crafting system for hats? Why put all that effort into something that has no effect on the gameplay? The day has finally come: Team Fortress is headed in a new direction.
You CANT craft hats, Only Weapons.
I mean, WHO CRAFTS A FEDORA WITH SCRAP METAL?!

Who gets 100 metal for buildings by picking up a glass bottle?

And to be honest I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT. I want my shotty with wider spread but more damage and crits :(
It'd be awesome.
:iia:
People on the steam forums do not believe random stat weapons are coming.
How I pity them.
From misterdevious on the steam forum:
All of the weapon attributes (heal on hit, health penalty, slow on hit, build ubercharge on hit) had their values narrowed back in August in a big revamping of the attribute system. The min/max values in there do not apply to any of our unlocks, so they are there for something else... possibly the crafting combinations. The system seems geared to make sure that penalties can always be bigger than advantages... that might be enough to allow us to create our own crazy combinations if they are automatically weighted to the negative.
Here are examples of how the penalties tend to outweigh the bonuses in the attributes file:
Damage penalty min 5% max 15%
Damage bonus min 5% max 10%
Firerate penalty min 5% max 25%
Firerate bonus min 5% max 10%
So randomized weapons would always be guaranteed weaker than the defaults but cater to a specific playstyle.

Erm, I want Random stats to come and all, but do you really need to talk like you one hundred percent sure?
Like, Its likley, and I really do want it, but when you talk like that you seem like kind of a douche.
It worries the hell out of me for one, because random stats could fucking suck and unbalance the hell out of a game that two years ago was the pinnacle of balance if Valve's not careful.
Still I think it'll be cool and I trust the crew not to be a bunch of dumbasses.

Not guaranteed, just usually. You could get 5% penalty 10% bonus if lucky.
hope we have the option to disable random stat weapons
hope we have the option to disable random stat weapons
Maybe if will be a server option.
At the very least someone'll probably make a Sourcemod plugin.
hope we have the option to disable random stat weapons
I could see this happening, officially or unofficially. If not an option from Valve, I'm sure the community can figure out something.
Sorry if I seem like a douche, but I just find it hard to believe they are implementing these elaborate systems just because of hats.
Hats are the motivation of every player ever. They are the epicenter of TF2.
This is going to be crazy awesome if true. I've been tracking Valve's experiments in this kind of system for ages, so I'll be really happy to see it finally come to fruition.
I really hope they expand the Backpack, too. Just give us infinite pages, come on Valve.
hmmm random stat items.
great idea imo.
i always loved the idea of the wrench that lets you build xx% faster
but doesnt let you upgrade :3
GO GO BABY SENTRUH!!!

I'm staying optimistic about this due to the possibility of catering to playstyles, but yeah - there's also a high chance of major screw-ups due to how much change this could potentially bring.
It's odd to see the Facepunch users are more open to the idea of random stat weapons then the Steam Forum Users. I can only speculate on why this is being new, but I would have to assume Facepunch is more open minded to experimentation.

Well I think we can all agree that Steam Forum users are very reluctant to change in any Valve game. Remember L4D2? or TF2's drop system? The Steam forums pretty much exploded with rage every time Valve tries to experiment with something.

I think you're thinking way too much about this.
I think you're thinking way too much about this.
Perhaps, but it is fun to ponder. Especially when we have to wait for the new update to arrive.
Also keep in mind that Valve is experimenting with unique items. We've seen the developer weapons, community weapons, and soon the prize winning, one of a kind, propaganda contest weapons. Everything seems to point towards unique/random weapons.
I want a ninja-based Fire Axe and Shotgun and Flamethrower.
The Fire Axe and Backburner are starting to get a little bit old.
Also I want a Scattergun with a large clip and tight spread.

Merry christmas
Team Borderlands 2
Hopefully it doesn't turn into TF2's version of DWP (dynamic weapon pricing) that was in CSS because Valve thought it might be a good idea.

How controversial was that update? I was never into CSS that much, so I never really knew how it was received and how much of an impact it actually had on the game.

$10,000 armor never forget :911:
to the guy that asked about how the community received it; it was universally hated. everybody in cs:S only uses the ak/m4/deagle, so they were pissed to see that they had to use other weapons because the ak/m4/deagle were so damn expensive. it was a good idea, but the sperglords that play cs:s were so horrified by having to use weapons that aren't the ak/m4/deagle that they didn't use it, which killed it.
