Thanks, cleared some things up.

This seems a lot like Diablo 2's runewords, in that you could find out different combinations at the expense of the lost runes (well find them out those hundreds of years ago when d2 was released)

The fact that he says that the shovel was a place holder for another weapon makes me think that one of the soldiers new unlocks will most likely be a melee weapon.
