Almost everything is going down, except unusuals and some strange weapons. If you go to bp.tf and check latest changes, you'll find it. Bp.tf means shit to a lot of you guys here, but it's a good place to reflect people's opinion about market, price, etc..
The price used to be stable are dropping, now it is possible to buy bill's hat for 7 keys, and craftable hat for 1.11-1.22, or even 1 ref.
It is more difficult to sell unusual these days, to my experience, except god tier+god effect unusuals. But it's very hard to sell unusual for pure, or get pure offers.
Too many new hats and new effects on the market, and the text mode got removed. People don't have enough currency to buy new stuff they like and can't see the chance in the foreseeable future (it used to be achievable with idling).
It seems like deflation to me, but the key price remains high, so I don't know how to face or define this situation.
This is my personal view.
What do you guys think?
Update on 7/26: scrap.tf buys genuine hats for 1.11 and ellis cap for 1.22, resell them for 1 scrap higher.
And: What do you think is the most stupid thing in TF2 investment? To me, it's craft # & odd levels.
a lot of genuines on the community market place are under $1 now too
a lot of genuines on the community market place are under $1 now too
Yeah seems like people are cashing out
The market isn't really crashing, he just become more and more weird because of uncontrolled "community" prices getting even more ridiculous. Rich people richer, not so richer people poorer. Just like the real world in fact

Could you be more specific about 'community prices'?

Backpack.tf, Spreadsheet and Paypal sites. This video explains it all pretty well:

metal has very little use so getting keys for metal is very hard

I think the video talks about another story which mainly involves high tier unusual market, but from my observation the whole market- especially low tier stuff (the stuff priced below 1 bud)-is crashing too. You can see more people wanna sell their items for keys with no other offers than people wanna buy items with keys nowadays.
From what little involvement I have in TF2 trading, it looks like it will sometime soon. I couldn't care less, shooting people comes before hats to me.

As the person who made that video, it most definitely applies to lower tier unusuals too. I would estimate a good 80% of unusuals out there are rounded up and deemed as "cancer", which no one wants to come near.
If I had to blame it on something in particular though, I would blame backpack.tf and their incompetent admins. Thanks for destroying the economy. I'm very glad I play comp now instead.
as i was reading this thread, tf2scrap just posted an announcement about genuine hats at 1.2 ref.
Poor backpack.tf, getting blamed for everything.
They may have been a big part the cause but it's like greenhouse gasses, you can blame the coal power plant then drive your hummer to work without noticing any contradiction.
I still trade but I can now afford to pay flat prices for everything, it's actually pretty easy to let go and say "I'm gonna pay exact price and not haggle at all."
Oh yeah also I saw it coming late and am cashing out and leaving behind only enough to future proof my botkiller collection and buy the shit I want.
I think that maybe others will notice a rise in cashing out and panic leading to an eventual ohshit moment that'll pass quickly but remove the impression that the economy is stable.
Anyways I don't really know or have studied the economy that much, just content that I can sell earbuds to people who the immediately make me cringe by investing in unusuals.

Yes, and it's very hard to find people buying craft hat for 1.33 on OP.

I was like, there's nothing safe to invest except pure, but since they are pure it is not literally 'investment' I guess?
As far as I remember, keys started rising around the end of the halloween update, for some odd reason.

halloween unusuals
But why didn't it go down in any moment? I mean, the price only raised, never dropping even a scrap. Was it just pure idling and people doing "buying keys 2.55, selling keys 2.77 trade me if interested"?
I miss the old days when keys were a stable currency and I had their prices memorized...

I would love to hear exactly how.
Good. It's stupid for virtual items to go for that much anyways, especially unusuals.

Awwww look I got a dumb and disagree rating from people who are likely hat barons. How does it feel to know you invested that much money in fucking tf2 hats?
It probably feels the same as investing in bitcoin.

delicious
Unusual pricing is a crapshoot and has always been a crapshoot. There is no way to sell an unusual, whether it's for TF2 items or real life money, without pulling the numbers right out of your ass. For actual trading of things, that's completely fine and is how bartering actually fucking works, but since TF2 works on a dumb economy-alike, everything has to have a price or base value.
That's a huge problem, because there are now literally thousands of unusual effect/hat combinations. Even if you go through a broker or someone who knows how to sell unusuals, the only way they'll be able to give you a price is by comparison, and 'sales by comparison' makes for a shitty economy.
[editline]e[/editline]
Basically, the TF2 economy is dumb and inflates and deflates at random intervals for no good reason. Unusual hats cannot be accurately priced because there's no way to judge the rarity of a certain combination of effect and hat. Metal is too easy to come buy and keys are hard to sell or buy because now you can just pick them up from the market for cheap.
Dude, I'm still stuck in 2009. I'm crafting scrap to make hats because its all I know.
This market stuff blows my mind.
The main problem is people refusing to accept changes in the economy.
its because the masses are listening to sites like backpack.tf and they're being controlled by a lucky tycoon

It always boggles my mind how in-depth the TF2 economy is. I try to only trade with friends because we all trade amongst ourselves for what we want, so when I do make trades on TF2TP or in trading servers I always get this really weird feeling.
I sold my unusual on the Steam market this last week. I'll probably be selling most of my backpack in the next couple months.
I've found that most of the stuff I've invested in haven't really increased in value over the months. I anticipate that it is because demand is decreasing, due to overall playerbase decreasing.
