In case you were unaware of this, a number of regulars to this section decided to "raid" a gaming community that blocked us access to their server.
I permabanned a group of people partly through admission of guilt and partly through the site owner's own supplied list.
There has been quite a bit of confusion about this, as it appears that quite a large amount of the people banned were in fact innocent. I have been trying to get the site owner to make his mind up for a couple of days now, so I can fairly unban innocent people as well as punish the people who attacked his site.
In the interest of honesty and to prevent further rumours and speculation, I would like to make my entire PM history to the site owner of BBB.com public. Make of this what you will, but hopefully you will understand that I have your best interests at heart and I am not looking to unnecessarily ban anyone from this website without due cause.
Hello,
I was told that you would be the person to get in touch regarding a recent raid on my 2 dedicated servers by Facepunch Studio members due to a recent decision on my communities forums to "block" connections to my server from players that are a part of the Facepunch Studios Steam Group.
My Websites and Gameserver suffered a severe DDoS attack causing me to not only go over on my monthly bandwidth usage (waiting for the final bill for this) but to also took down a church website that I host for free. They also posted private information about one of my community users on the forums and made fun of them for childish things in an attempt to harrass.
They proceeded to spam all my threads with pornographic imagery (I'm a 32 year old father of 5) and made other lude comments/posts. Once they took my webserver offline they started to attempt to exploit my 2 gameservers (mission accomplished) taking them both offline.
As if this wasn't enough they joined my communities official steam group and decided to post obscenities there as well and just generally spam it.
Just in case you aren't privy to what they did and how it all transpired here is a link to a post someone had linked here. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=961691

I would like to apologise on behalf of Facepunch and I am now going through the thread and permanently banning anyone who I suspect was involved in the actions against your community. If you could supply me with IP addresses of anyone posting offensive content on your forum, DDoSing your servers, etc then I will take care of their forum accounts on here.
These kids need to learn their actions are not without consequence.

I do have a list of those that registered on my forums and posted all the spam. It's in an excel sheet here REDACTED along with full page screencaps located here REDACTED (15Mb file).
I have been contacted by a "NuclearCheerio" on Steam regarding this. He claims to be an employee of Garry and claims to have steam banning capabilities via steamworks administration (which I personally do not see being possible).
To be honest I don't know if the guy is a Troll or what but he informed me that they had found the group responsible for the DDoS and has banned their steam accounts and slapped them with a bill that is supposed to go towards helping me pay the costs of my bandwidth usage (roughly 800Gb of syn flooding occurred before I could get the route nulled).
To be quiet honest I'm not sure if I should believe this fellow but he has been very friendly this whole time. His profile is here http://steamcommunity.com/id/NuclearCheerio/
I actually have screenshots of our conversations if you'd like to see them (in-case he is no employee of Garry).
Thank you for your help with this and know that I hold no hard feelings at the forums for this even though they attacked us and have instructed my members to not mention it (I don't really want to foster a bad name, I just purchased GMod the morning of the attack lol).

He's bullshitting you, get me his email and I'll take care of him too. I'll ban those guys tomorrow. Think I've got most of them though

Ah ok thanks for clearing that up. Do you know if there are any plans on helping me financially? I had to pay an additional $80.00 due to the overage on my bandwidth with Linode.com (they only charge $0.10/Gb for overage) so it didn't kill me entirely but I am in-fact an recently unemployed father of 5 and don't get a lot of money via employment checks (this is really embarrassing to mention) I'm just very financially strapped because of this and I had to pay my host yesterday which was an additional $80.00 I did not have.
The NuclearCheerio fellow has never given me his email address and I don't believe him to be part of the raid (can't find him in the users list) but I do not know if he is a contributor to the DDoS attack looking to gain some information about what's happening.
I did however find him here http://www.facepunch.com/member.php?u=176156 if you wanted to give him a look over.
Thank you for all you've done!

Does his steamID match with the one listed on his FP account?
There are no plans to help you financially. You could email garry but asking FP is useless as the majority of them are 12 - 16 year olds.

Yes, his steamid and profile here match identically. Thanks for the info on the financial help. I would contact Garry if I knew how but sadly I do not.

It appears one of your members was unjustly banned "EliteGuy" http://www.facepunch.com/member.php?u=82271
One of the major contributors to the raid was "Craptasketic" http://www.facepunch.com/member.php?u=50699 he was one of the folks posting the dick spam.

Eliteguy was on the list you gave me. If he was unjustly banned, how many more people on that list were also unjustly banned?
Make your mind up on who did and did not spam

Please try to understand that I'm a one man operation and I included him when he shouldn't have been (error on my part). Sorry to inconvenience you in all this, makes what I've had to clean up seem that much more insignificant.

What about the rest of the list?

The rest are indeed guilty, I had accidentally left the previous fellow on the list when I was separating the good from the bad.

I've decided to call off my investigations over the DDoS on my site. I've also decided to remove the block I had on my server for FP members. I've made the conscience decision to forgive and leave it at that.
I know you did the appropriate thing and banned those involved but wanted to say that if you were to reverse that decision I would be absolutely fine with that (even prefer it).
I'd like for our communities to get along peacefully and have had a lot of banned users come to me with apologies for what they've done. I really do believe they have learned their lesson.
I wouldn't mind posting a thread here as well about my decision to call everything off if that would ease the burden of having to go back on your decision. I've also indicated my decision on my board here http://forums.busybeingbrutal.com/viewtopic.php?p=1733&f=8#p1733
Thanks for all your help in this and hope this message finds you well!

I would appreciate it if you could tell me who was spamming and who was simply posting so I can unban people fairly while also punishing the correct people
He also made several public posts on his own website regarding our PMs
Hello everyone,
We are now back online. I would like to start off by apologizing to everyone for the temporary unavailability of both our website and our servers. This was due to recent attacks on our website, server, steam group and even some of our members by members of the Facepunch.com Forums. The BBB site and servers went down after a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Tuesday, June 29th 2010. In addition to the attack our forums were raided and spammed by these Facepunch members and there was a lot of cleaning up that had to be done.
This attack was brought on because of the decision to block the group from our server. This decision was originally made due the group’s members trolling the server. These members showed a complete disregard to our server rules and made threats to hack the server. I just want to point out that we are a small community compared to the Facepunch group and our only intention was to ensure that our members are not harassed and bullied by such a group. I honestly never expected the members of such a large group to overreact to a block from this community especially since the majority of the attackers had never previously heard of us before. We will keep the block on the server for now.
I am working with Facepunch on this matter and ask that nobody makes any snide remarks or comments about what went down here. I'd like to think we came out ahead despite all the attacks and trash talk since we did not retaliate in the least. I have been dealt a hard hit on the wallet to get the site back up and running and will be prosecuting those involved for DDoS attack (it's a Federal crime in the USA).

Today I received a message by Mr. Gestapo on Facepunch:
I would like to apologise on behalf of Facepunch and I am now going through the thread and permanently banning anyone who I suspect was involved in the actions against your community. If you could supply me with IP addresses of anyone posting offensive content on your forum, DDoSing your servers, etc then I will take care of their forum accounts on here.

Judging from the original thread he's been busy with banning. I expect (and already had to deal with) a few "lonewolfs" from the mass banning to join up here looking to cause further trouble. I'm still keeping logs and if another attack should happen it will easily be identified like last time.
I am working with "a certain organization" to have these cyber terrorists held accountable for their actions as they are very much illegal in the United States.
Facepunch has declined to help me on the financial burdens this raid/attack has caused me for this reason given by Mr. Gestapo:
There are no plans to help you financially. You could email garry but asking FP is useless as the majority of them are 12 - 16 year olds.
A little shitty to be honest considering how much money flows through that website compared to us (unless you want to include the $32 we made in donations due to the earbud giveaway). But I will be making all logs, steam id's, email addresses, ip addresses publicly available to anyone upon request and will be providing this information to other gaming websites/communities. Including Steam Support (as their actions break the ToS)
Facepunch's users have really shot themselves in the foot this time.

After long consideration (and all the apologies I received by FP members) I have decided to remove the block on FacePunch Studios from our servers. Sure they said a lot of mean and hurtful things about us (and many probably still do) but I think it's time to settle this matter once and for all.
I never meant to single out everyone or imply that everyone from FacePunch Studios was a child or troll. I just had a 100% ratio of bad apples over the period of several months and thought it to be the best move at the time.
I know they have a large community and we are a small one. But I'd hope to think that we can both co-exist on the internet for the simple fact that we share similar interests :) I've decided to call off the investigation for the DDoS attacks and will be asking Mr. Gestapo to reverse his ban of everyone involved in the raid.
As of right now everyone that took part in the raid are un-banned on the Servers/Forums. You are free to connect while being part of the FacePunch Studios Steam Group.
I forgive easily and hold no hard feelings, I just hope for everyone to get along and have fun.
Someone also supplied me with "insider information" which is credible. This is presumably what the site owner told the person who supplied this information
Mr. Gestapo wanted a list of those who signed up on my forums and I provided that list to him. I had no idea he was going to ban the whole so I have corrected that error by pointing out exactly who was at fault.
If you have read the rest of the post, you can obviously deduce that the entire statement is false.
UPDATE
After making this thread;
The ones that were the main contributors to all the porn posting is Thundermanz and TRG. All others can be unbanned really.

So you compelled me to ban a bunch of people who didn't really do anything
Nice one
Poor guy didn't deserve all that shit. Glad to see he decided to remove the block.
I think he deserved some backlash for banning an entire group as opposed to those who simply want to play, E.G. COMPLAINTS, but definitely not an entire raid.
I want Neckbeard back
Can't believe he's nice enough to unblock the Facepunch group, even after that whole situation.
This is good, hopefully this will teach FP a lesson...
Glad to see his servers and website are back up.
He really didn't deserve all the backlash.
oh so this is what the raid bans were all about
ok then
At least you were able to unban the good people.
Stay classy facepunch, stay fucking classy, I seriously don't get how people can be this retarded, you don't fucking DDoS a smaller website like this. And you should tell him to give the list of IP's to the local police, should help getting the cash back.
Did they DDoS it?
Poor guy didn't deserve all that shit. Glad to see he decided to remove the block.
was it stupid to kick anyone belonging to the FP Steam group? - Yes
was it right to raid them because of that? - No
Is neck beard getting unbanned?
He didnt do anything bad.
It was kind of him to forgive and forget all this.
I believe that Neckbeard was banned by accident. He didn't do anything malicious and he stopped posting after they started the dick spam.
Whoah did they go onto the Tf2 servers too?
eliteguy and neckbeard confirmed innocent
I don't think he was actually expecting anything to happen when he started threatening and naming participants. The way he's now backing off from all those claims seems like he got scared and feels some remorse himself because he started getting complaints from people who got unfairly punished as a result of - it seems - his actions.
Maybe we can all just get along <3
eliteguy and neckbeard confirmed innocent

eliteguy and neckbeard confirmed innocent
Ahhh, it's good day to be a forum goer. Engie update as well as Neckbeard being brought back from the dammed.
I never really liked BBB from the start, simply because of the Earbud incident, but I don't think they deserved all this. Especially him having 5 kids, and being over charged 80 dollars, that he really doesn't have.
Now I feel bad for the poor guy. :smith:
I might play on their servers one day. Are they any good? No rude comments please, I like these guys.
I might play on their servers one day. Are they any good? No rude comments please, I like these guys.
I wouldn't know, the only time I tried to join I was blocked for being in the FP group. :saddowns:
I might play on their servers one day. Are they any good? No rude comments please, I like these guys.
pedobear hat
This guy sounds like a nice guy. If I ever see one of their servers I will drop by.

Earbud incident?
i'm not trying to be a dick but why have 5 kids and maintain 2 servers, maybe more?
Well, if you can get them popular, it's actually a lot of fun. Especially if the kid's are old enough to play TF2 with you on your servers (see: Mature)
But if he can't afford it, you have a point. It's not something you do if you can't afford to do it.
Edit:
Earbud incident?
Some guy (I can't remember who) was actually selling earbuds to people. If you paid him, he'd take your account, and log into his mac with it. It just struck me as greedy, and a very likely scam. And that was the first thing I saw on the BBB forums, so it was a pretty bad first impression.
Actually I think the guy might be lying about him having kids. Not trying to be offensive, but he has pedobear hats on his server, and he has kids. He might have been making a lie so hezzy would get all sad, then pay him the money.
Then once again, it ain't like he has the black horsecock bat.
I still feel sad for him.
Good thing he removed the block.
Hell, he is having a hard life and FP just did it harder for him
