I know there's been a lot of hate and general malaise floating around through some of the FP community, but I think that makes it all the more important to say how great this update turned out to be. Sure, there was a little bit of drama with the golden wrenches, but when you look at what Valve gave us this update, it's well worth it.
Let's start with the maps. They are amazing. I hope I'm not the only one who stands and stares at the scenery on pl_Upward, and Hightower is, IMO, much more well-designed than Pipeline in that it's a single-stage map. I haven't gotten the chance to play a lot of Thunder Mountain yet, but the map looks huge. The first stage alone is massive, I haven't even seen the other 2 yet.
Now, for the Engie unlocks, these are just incredible. I went through the time to legitimately earn each unlock tonight, and it was very much worth it. Let's start with the Gunslinger; this weapon alone changes the entire playstyle of the Engie, plain and simple. Like the Chargin' Targe and Huntsman, this really makes the class play out much differently and puts a new spin on an old class.
The Wrangler looks like it has the potential to be incredible powerful if used right. I was surprised at how much I missed my pistol when using it, but at the same time, turning the Sentry into your own weapon is pretty amazing. It probably took a lot of work from Valve to get this weapon to work. (There is of course the bonus of hearing the Engie shout "That thing ain't on autopilot son!" when you're on a roll with the Wrangler. :clint:)
Finally, Frontier Justice is great paired with either of the other two unlocks. I noticed with the Gunslinger and FJ combined, I was having a ton of fun. One can rack up assists and a few kills from hiding a mini-sentry, and when it blows up, you can just duck in and plop another down, no sweat. The best part is after accumulating all those assists and kills, you can let loose with a ton of revenge crits. With the Wrangler, the FJ makes a great last-resort weapon when you're manually-controlled Sentry goes down. By then, you'll likely have accumulated a lot of kills and you can help turn the tide with a wave of revenge crits.
And let's not forget that ability to move your gear. That's something I could talk about all night. It's astounding how much new strategy this opens up for the Engie. You can pack up a level 3 sentry and sneak into enemy territory, or you can easily move your teleporter exits to keep the enemy from knowing where it is. It's really crazy.
Again, I think Valve outdid themselves with this update. I think some people took the minimalistic approach of presenting the new unlocks, along with the short time frame (only 4 days as opposed to the normal 5 or 6) as meaning that this update was somehow less. I even thought so too for a little bit, but the change in gameplay that this update brings could very well make it the biggest change in TF2 yet.
tl;dr Lots of Valve praise. Just something to contrast the blind hate.
Edit: God dammit, I hate title typos. :argh:
i like the new maps they're good
the new engy stuff is good too
it was a good update
it makes playing engy funner
The actual update is great, minus the few bugs and exploits it has, but they fucked up the promotion of it.
The Golden Wrench promotion was poorly planned and poorly executed. I hope Valve never do anything like this in any of their games again.
What they did for the Portal 2 promotion was good, this was not.
No matter what people say, this is probably one of the better updates, if not, the BEST update.
It was a lot better than the Heavy, Scout, Pyro, and Medic updates.
Just remove the sandvich recharge and this update is perfect

Why would you do that?! The sandvich is useful to give to others now. You just gotta wait after being credit to medic.
i personally think the sandvich recharge is a tad better choice.
I like most of the stuff in the update, it's creative atleast. However, I loved engie the way it was. I thought it was perfectly balanced the way it was but the moving stuff just seems like it makes it easily played now. But I guess not being able to carry multiple things kind of balances it out.

Umm..
Sandvich recharge is a buff. Now instead of going to a medkit for a new sandvich to help your medic, it recharges.
i certainly like using the new things because it doesnt feel like your just sitting there and camping behind the sentry as much
Why would you do that?! The sandvich is useful to give to others now. You just gotta wait after being credit to medic.
Well i just don't like having to wait 15 seconds after eating each sandvich.

I think my game is fucked then. I can no longer eat sandvich after sandvich anymore. I have to wait 15 seconds for the bar to fill up before i can eat another one.
Yup, the sandwich change is great for teamwork.
That Thunder payload map is incredible, I giggled like a mad man looking out the spawn window and seeing red team doing aquarobics.
Seriously, this is the best update by far.
Also the new menu music is fucking awesome if you ask me.
Just sayin.

it was horribly imbalanced.
it was horribly imbalanced.
I would say, originally, the Engie was balanced, but as the classes got more and more unlocks, the tide turned on the Engie because other classes had more ways to destroy his buildings.
The southern hospitality stink though, they need to buff it bad.
This update is the best so far. People are acting like whiny little bitches because they didn't get a golden wrench.

I can't think of any updates that really did much to make it easier to destroy buildings besides the Direct Hit. The only thing I think that was imbalanced about engie was the time it took to set up a nest. However, I still don't think they should of made it so you could completely pick up the sentry and just plop it down where you please.

You move slower when you're carrying shit corncake

Also Coldfront is an OK map
Not exactly what I would pay 3000 to use in my game for but OK
I haven't seen Thunder Mountain stages 2 or 3 because RED team is full of Engies.
On a server I admin it barely gets any people. The most it had was 10. It was full all day. Also half the teams were non-engi.
Basically:
Heavy
Demoman
Soldier
Engineer
Spy
was all that was played.
It didn't include trading, or a climax, or a free weekend, or any polycount stuff, and it was much smaller than the two updates that came before it (mac update doesn't count). It is free, and I'm glad for that, but I was expecting more.
Seriously, open up the Soldier vs. Demoman update or the Sniper Vs. Spy update and tell me they're worse than the engy update. Those updates lasted six days! This one just has less content. I was at least expecting something other than ANOTHER payload map on the last day.
We have crafting
Polycount stuff is on Monday. And you can craft the Southern Hospitality, along with the other Engie weapons (although you'll need an Engie token).
When TF2 finishes updating, I'm off to visit 24/7 2fort as Demo.
Wait, are you sure that polycount items are being released on monday? Or is it just the results.

It probably won't be released on Monday. They'd want to flesh it out a bit, bring back the players that had their fun in TF2 for the week (after Engy update).
They might announce the winners though.

I think they said that they will announce it on Monday.
This has probably been my favourite update so far. Which is strange, because I wasn't excited for it at all having not played TF2 for months.
