Why do people think that it takes skill? I know it takes more skill than just mouse1, but not by much.
Mouse one, mouse two, swap weapons, mouse one and that's a guaranteed a kill against anything that isn't a heavy.
So can anyone tell me why people think that this is what skilled pyros do?
(Note that this is not BASHING the axtinguisher, just a clarification as to why people hold it so highly.)

It definitely [I]feels[/I] like you're an epic ninja assassin.
I don't ever even use it, but when I do, I just press Q after ignition.
You have to juggle them into a position where you can hit them firstly, secondly the enemy usually aims right for you unless he's totally distracted
How come people tell people to learn to Axtinguish instead of W+M1 when it is technically no different? :v:
I find it annoying how alot of Pyros see it as a upgrade. Alot of people use the flargeun also use the Axetinguisher, but what do they have to defend themselves with underwater?
If you want to defend yourself against other Pyros, keep the default Axe or shotgun equipped.
Not too much skill involved, but in those few seconds you press Q. Your usually dead.

Most maps don't have water, it's usually not a problem. And a Pyro should be avoiding the water, anyway, since they're already at a huge disadvantage without their primary weapon.
The rare times I play Pyro, I prefer to stay behind with the Homewrecker and help out. The Axtinguisher was never too usefull for me, the delay between weapon swapping always made me forget about it and just flame my target.

195 damage in .8 seconds to like [U]<[/U]130 damage
It doesn't really take that much skill, but it's insanely more gratifying to kill people with the axtinguisher than to just flame 'em.
I prefer to use the axtinguisher than the back burner.
But that's just me.
Because if you ignite and airblast them into a nice pocket then axe them it not only disorientates them but you will probably come out alive and with more health than just using a flamethrower.
It's better than just W+M1.

That's silly, because an airblast can keep them in one place but instead you let them kite you around?
You lose a lot precious time by switching to the axtinguisher. In the end it mostly pays off, but if they kill you before you hit them, they are likely to have more health left than they would have if you just W+M1'ed them a bit longer.
I find myself like to use the flaregun more often now. I just love the minicrits on already burning players.

They'd just run back and shoot you from range while you are being silly with your axe. :v: Bad idea.

Might as well bind a key to kill and press it every time you play pyro.
Flare gun is too slow. Shotty kills them faster.

Depends on skill. Like I said, they already recieve an initial blow, hit them again with a flare and it's a minicrit, PLUS they already burning.
I also think axing someone adds to humliation of the kill.
I use the fire axe, nowadays. The only time I'll be using it is when I'm sneaking up behind a guy to kill him. On crit servers anyway. I don't like random crits, but you work with what you got. I can't use the shotgun anyways, the flaregun is just too satisfying.

Damage done influences it, but you still have a chance to crit no matter how little damage you've done. It's more random than not.

I like using the stock Flamethrower + Flare Gun + Axetinguisher. Sure, I have nothing to defend myself underwater with, but I like to specialize. Besides, as a Pyro, I really shouldn't be hanging around water anyway. (And even then, there really aren't too many Valve maps where water is prominent)
