Does anyone know how to remove or lessen the bleed effect when hit with the Shiv or Southern Hospitality? I play with DX8 and I cannot see anything.
Why are you playing in DX8?

My computer isn't too good. Couple that with a 4:3 monitor it kills my graphics card. If I play on a 16:9 widescreen I get 150+ fps. :P
Aye, that effect is really painful for DX8 users.
It turns the screen almost completely red, basically panics you and forces you to retreat or spam rockets.
That effect is terrible and should be removed, even on DX9.
It makes me sick.
It's terrible even on DX9.
Same as you I can't see shit.
Yeah its annoying as fuck.
The effect isn't horrible.
Its the fact that there is too much of it.
If it was toned down a bit it would work better.
No, i'm fine with just the icon by the health. I don't need my screen flashing
they should have nerfed the visual effect instead of the bleeding dammage.
I can't remember the last time I was hit by it, but are we referring to a screen overlay or a particle bleed effect?
Recently I made a very-minimal CS:S bomb particle file (.pcf) for my friend who said that the bomb going off slowed down his computer to a crawl and even crashed. He mentioned it worked so I think im on to something.
Back to TF2 someone on steamforums was going on about "crit lightning" effect on weapons also causing slowdown.
Im seriously thinking of making a couple of "cheap" particle effects for specifically problematic particle effects, right after I finish my current project. Can some people with low-end computers name some specifically problematic particle effects? I know most of them have fallbacks and work fine but others I heard were notoriously bad.
Pop this in your materials/effects/ folder, should work:

It overwrites the default screen overlay with one much lighter. Haven't tested it so it might come out pink or something, though all I did was lower the opacity. This'll work for DX8, won't do anything in DX9, someone will have to write up a modified VMT for that.
If anyone really wants me to I can make a totally clear version and jarate mods.

What.

Do it, cheap particles would be awesome. Critacola always slows me down. It'd be even better if you can do it without it looking like crap, that'd be awesome.
Hell, if you do every particle in TF2, you could probably submit it to Valve after testing.

I got a boner.

A smaller crit effect would be bliss to me.

I've got a saw, want to me help you there?

One little problem there...
There ARE several particle .pcf files that are "protected" as in you can edit them with the particle editor but when you enter a server with the edited one it autokicks you for "consistency".
So far I found this on:
-Teleporter FX
-Spy disguise
-Spy cigarette (wut?)
-Bullet tracers (but not muzzleflashes)
-Speech calls
-Burning character (the pcf is protected but there are material workarounds)
I haven't tried everything just yet but I will see.
Yeah I know some particles are protected; but if you can make the cost less resources and yet still look/function about the same providing no advantage/disadvantage, and then submitting them to Valve via the Contribute page -along with a text file explaining them- Valve might get off their ass and include it in for lower specs.
Since yanno, they seemingly have no intention on making stuff for shitty computers, as each update kinda makes it run worse and worse.
But I don't expect everything. Hell, just the ones that are editable/allowed custom would be fantastic.
I would love to have a reduced bleed effect, perhaps just around the edges of the screen, and a more discrete but still noticable crit effect.
Can't see shit with the Frontier Justice.

These three can be exploited. You have a really tall and thin bright red particle as cigarette smoke - suddenly all spies in the area are visible as giant red spikes. You can tell where a teleporter is. You could know when someone is disguising at the other end of the battlefield.
The bleed effect is a screen material not a particle.

I do. I didn't notice it when it was just my health going down.
I've never had a problem with the effect, i guess i'm not using dx8 or 9 :D
8800gtx incase anyone knows.

Well you can only use DX8 or DX9 so it's just you.
I get an FPS boost of +10 frames whenever I'm hit by the Shiv.
