Whenever I pull on the axis-bars while re sizing a poly in 3Ds Max it just pancakes the poly to whatever axis is adjusted. I also cannot re-size the poly all together to shrink or grow the poly all on one.

3ds max has 3 scale modes, hit r to swap between them. Don't use squash when you should be using uniform scale
