I posted this on SPUF but all the little kids on there just started raging at me :/ so thought this would be a nice opportunity to introduce myself on here!
Anyway,
Has anyone noticed that the bugle horn doesn't actually have the sound of a real bugle, its just a guy mimicking the sound with his voice? I understand that people in the sound design industry cut corners for convenience i.e. they wouldn't blow up a building to get an explosion sound when they can create it artificially. This seems like a pretty tight corner to cut when they could have just presumably just rung up one of their friends (every sound designer has contacts with musicians) and asked them to come in and in exchange, show them the offices or something. At first i didnt notice that the bugle sound wasnt a bugle, but after hearing it in the game files i cant stop noticing that its soooooo fake sounding. =[

Disclaimer, title is somewhat a joke
Valve's everything are lazy

Well thanks for the headsup on this
Sadly I don't see the problem here
I have a bugle if you'd like a replacement.

I dont really have a problem, and neither should anyone else. It just a topic open for discussion.
Im quite happy as it is. It just an observation. I can live with it ;)

I assume you haven't seen this yet op.
i think it's intended to be that as the soldier is not a REAL soldier, he would not know how to play a bugle, or at least use military calls, and thus would just make noises himself whilst pretending to play the bugle.
In other words, its actually rather funny, and quite clever.
well, in the film Hot Fuzz, when Doris hits one of the female shop workers, when she skids on the floor, the screech sound was made vocally.

Iv actually never thought about it like this. If its actually meant to be how you described, i bow down to Valve.
valve tends to get lazy on certain things, but i don't really mind. They only get lazy on visual things like models, but nothing gamebreaking.
i can't hear it
Haha, can someone post the Bugle sound? I want to hear this voice bugle.

hahaha this is awesome! I was hoping someone would make a video compilation of their lazy things. I can't blame them for things that only show up in FOV changes, since that's just an option they are kind enough to give us to let us change the view from how it was designed... but the rest are great.
Not what I would call "lazy".
As others said, they're just cutting corners.

You really thought the soldier was a proper soldier?
He joined WW2 when it was already over for years ffs.
I thought it was pretty cool.
And as far as acting goes, hats off to the guy that provided the screams of the zombie.
It was certianly not shabby, it was very realistic.
Almost too realistic.
Gabes knife collection? :ohdear:
Valve is flawed.
Boxes everywhere.
Valve haven't hired a decent sound guy since Half Life 2 back in 2004.
Ever since, it's been stock, remodified, rehashed and and an assortment of other tricks. All they've done good with voices though, I'll give them that. I'm just damn fucking tired of the same footsteps, physics noises and the like for every game.
Valve should hire Michael Winslow to be their new sound guy.

Nice embedded-disabled video Uber_Tofu
But the second video shows he has perfect talent for it.
L4D uses the heavy's minigun sound and Glados' anger core's screaming for some of the zombie sounds.
This kind of thing has been happening for a while.
Look at a tank running down the street in L4D
Now look at Dog running down the street in HL2
Report your findings to me

Those problems with the higher FOV aren't Valve's fault. The game wasn't intended to be played at a viewmodel FOV higher than 54, so they saved resources by not drawing surfaces that nobody should ever see anyway. Now if there are problems at viewmodel_fov 54, THEN you've got laziness.
Also, you're calling them lazy for the wrong reason.
They use the same exact physics sounds for every game.
This part I really don't care about and there's nothing Valve can really do about it. They pull all those sounds from widely available soundbanks; they don't make them themselves. You can hear these same sounds used a lot in tons of movies. That doesn't mean movie makers are lazy either; it just means they don't want to spend unnecessary money exploding an actual barrel to get an exploding barrel sound.

This.
Glados' anger core's screaming for some of the zombie sounds.
You got that backwards though.
This.

So you are saying that the zombie screams were used for the anger core?
:downs:

On the other hand, have you noticed that they are making these things for FREE? and you're complaining? how rude.
Valve are lazy, but they make it come out perfect once it's done.
