This.
I only join groups, I don't even LIKE the word "clan".
Groups are fine, If you support them. Just don't join every willy nilly group that your friends invite you to.

I never accept group invites, I either join the groups manually or ignore them.
Alot of servers automatically invite you to its group when you join it, and then spam you with annoying events.

This is the main reason why I want out of every single group in existance except for groups I know, if I knew how to do it.
I suggest you to join BLU, they have quite handful of splendid mercenaries, with very open hands for newcomers.
If you join a clan, make sure you put the clan tag so your name gets 3x bigger

Don't listen to this guy, please. Facepunch has an irrational hatred towards clans because they're pro-casual (as if Team Fortress 2 wasn't casual enough). Join a clan based off your own decision, and don't listen to a biased community. If you don't want to get serious, look at the clan's background before you join it. However, yes, less-serious clans are probably just 'groups.' I personally own a small clan composed entirely of my close friends and we do relatively well in our ozfl matches. It's all fun, but it's even better when we win.
Instead of looking in-game with a [LFC] tag or something in your name, I'd suggest signing up to www.ozfortress.com. This will allow people who are interested in your skills (and experience) to easily communicate with you and easily recruit you. You can also just browse the forums and look for tips and stuff in the forums.
Very few clans will actually use an Engineer in their core team, and all Engineer unlocks are banned until further notice in ozfl matches. The reason for this is, in terms of damage output, the Engineer is essentially a slower, less-mobile version of the Scout. The only time I have ever seen a team in a ranked match use an Engineer is to defend the last point if they lose 2nd very quickly (and this is normally only for 2-3 minutes). You wont be able to enter a clan as an Engineer, and having good communication skills is vital to be a good Medic.
Best of luck, and please don't listen to anyone on Facepunch who hates clans. Most of them can't understand certain aspects of pacing and gameplay in clan matches, get confused and whine about how bad competitive play is. Yes, Team Fortress 2 is completely designed as a casual game. However, there is still enough room in the low skill ceiling for people to undoubtedly be better at certain things such as airshots and movement to absolutely dominate their opponents.

How so? I mean, besides the whole "Compfag" thing. Of course, he did say that he hated casuals, which is a kinda compfaggy thing to say.
