Whenever I join a server with 24+ people, it's one giant cluster fuck and I never manage to stay alive for longer than 10 seconds, in any class. So do I just need to practise, or am I just on the wrong server? Do I need to choose a server with less people?
Currently I'm having k/d ratios of 5/50 and switch class every 2 deaths and eventually I ragequit...

There's a server I know that's explicitly noob-friendly. It got a playercap of 31 however (24 is often seen as the best amount of players). It's a 24/7 Badwater server (good for learning the map), but I think the clan hosting this server got others, too.
I'm proposing this server because there are usually people from the clan online and they use mics, so team coordination is easier. Also always seems to have enough Medics.

Hope that wasn't too much "advertisement", I just wanted to make sure you know what you're in for.
In general, don't use servers with instant-respawn or superstrong premium accounts, both can ruin a game quickly.

Also do you use to use skins or custom models? If so you should check out the facepunch servers.

The facepunch servers are a good place to learn teamwork later on, but for now try GTFOgaming or a russian server. Russians can't play TF2.

Lolaken servers are great, just plain TF2. Server is in Sweden, so it's good for Europeans.

I would start off with 24 instant spawns first. Quick to grasp and breaks away from the havoc of 32 man servers which can be laggy and confusing.
